NHL trade rumors: Penguins could part ways with Bryan Rust as two teams circle with interest

As the Pittsburgh Penguins want to start a retooling phase, Bryan Rust's name has quickly become one of the most intriguing topics in the NHL trade rumor mill. The 32-year-old winger, known for his consistency and veteran leadership, is reportedly drawing interest from several teams despite being under contract through 2027-28 at a reasonable $5.125 million annual cap hit. While the Penguins aren't under pressure to move him immediately, their front office might view this offseason as the perfect window to capitalize on his current form. Given the direction Pittsburgh appears to be heading—shifting toward a younger, faster roster—it makes sense that they'd listen to offers, especially if they help replenish their prospect pool or bring back assets that align with a long-term vision. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman weighed in on the growing speculation during a recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast. 'I think there has been a lot of interest in Bryan Rust, and for good reason,' Friedman shared. 'It wouldn't surprise me if Buffalo was one of those teams, too... I would think Columbus would be another... But someone told me that Buffalo was one of the teams around Rust.' The Buffalo Sabres' interest, in particular, aligns perfectly with their current roster needs. After moving JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth, they're left with a noticeable gap in their top six. Rust, with his proven scoring touch and playoff pedigree, could seamlessly slot into that role. More importantly, his presence would add much-needed experience and leadership to a young core desperate for guidance and stability as they aim to break out of mediocrity. On the other hand, the Columbus Blue Jackets also emerge as a logical landing spot. His addition to the top six and power play would provide a noticeable upgrade, especially as the Blue Jackets strive to become legitimate playoff contenders once again. While it remains uncertain whether a deal will be finalized this offseason, one thing is clear: Bryan Rust is a hot commodity. Whether it's Buffalo, Columbus, or a surprise suitor, the Penguins have a valuable asset on their hands—one that could soon reshape another franchise's fortunes. Also Read:

NHL Trade Rumors: 2 Teams Interested In Penguins' Bryan Rust

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust is one of the NHL's most-talked-about trade candidates right now. With the Penguins retooling their roster, the veteran winger has naturally been the subject of trade speculation. The Penguins are not in a position where they need to rush a potential move, though, as Rust has a bargain $5.125 million cap hit until the end of the 2027-28 season. However, he also just had a big season, so it is fair to wonder if the Penguins could take advantage of his heightened trade value. Advertisement During the latest episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman named the Buffalo Sabres and the Columbus Blue Jackets as two teams that are likely interested in Rust. "I think there has been a lot of interest in Bryan Rust, and for good reason," Friedman said. "It wouldn't surprise me if Buffalo was one of those teams, too. Don't know if it will happen, but I think there are a lot of teams looking at that guy. I would think Columbus would be another... But someone told me that Buffalo was one of the teams around Rust." Hearing that the Sabres are reportedly interested in Rust is not surprising in the slightest. After trading JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth, they have a clear hole in their top six, and Rust would undoubtedly fix it. In addition, he would give the Sabres another impactful veteran forward to help mentor their younger players, which is a clear need for them as they look to turn things around. Advertisement When looking at Columbus' lineup, it is fair to argue that they could use a player like Rust, too. He would certainly give the Blue Jackets' top six and power play a major boost if acquired. Furthermore, with the Blue Jackets on the rise, bringing in a star like Rust could help them take that next step and get back into the playoffs. While there certainly is a chance that they could end up trading away some of their key players before the off-season is done, they also should not be afraid to acquire players who could help them in the long term. Report: Penguins, Kings Having Trade Conversations

Dec 17, 2024; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Bryan Rust (17) skates through center ice with the puck against the Los Angeles Kings during the second period at PPG Paints Arena. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images It has been abundantly clear for quite a while now that three Pittsburgh Penguins are very much on the trade market. And it appears that one team is engaging in discussions. According to a report by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Los Angeles Kings have been "talking with" the Penguins about a potential trade opportunity. Advertisement Although - at this point - it is unclear which player the Kings may be targeting, there's a good chance that it's one of Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, or Erik Karlsson. Rust, 33, is coming off a career year, when he registered 31 goals and 65 points in 71 games. The same goes for Rakell, 32, who had career-highs in both goals (35) and points (70). Karlsson, 35, put up 11 goals and 53 points in addition to a rating of minus-24 in 82 games. Even though Karlsson would be an attractive option on the market for several teams, it is more likely that the Kings are targeting a forward. Dec 17, 2024; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Rickard Rakell (67) reacts after scoring the game winning goal in overtime against the Los Angeles Kings at PPG Paints Arena. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images It was rumored prior to the trade deadline that the Kings had an offer on the table for Rakell, so it stands to reason that they may be circling back. It has also been reported that several teams have called on Rust, whose consistency in terms of production - and his leadership qualities - would make him a valuable veteran presence for any contending team. Advertisement With the salary cap spiking this summer, the Kings have $21.71 million to work with. They are in need of offensive help, so adding Rakell or Rust would help in that department. And since each of their contracts - with Rakell at $5 million average annual value for three more years and Rust at $5.125 million for three more years - are very cost-effective, it stands to reason that the Penguins would get fair value in return for each. Penguins officially eliminated in lifeless loss to Chicago

This article originally appeared on It was a mere formality, but Sunday, it indeed became official when the Pittsburgh Penguins sleepwalked through 3-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center. Advertisement Rickard Rakell (34) tied his career high later in the third period when he snapped a quick pass from Bryan Rust at 5:20 of the third period, but it wasn't enough. The loss means the Penguins cannot catch the Montreal Canadiens and officially cannot make the 2024-25 Stanley Cup Playoffs, their third consecutive miss. The teams made highlights or actionable moments difficult to find. At times, implying they were going through the motions would have incorrectly implied motion. The Penguins and Blackhawks combined for just 25 shots after 30 minutes and zero goals. Not long after the halfway moments of the game, Penguins center Blake Lizotte almost scored a goal, but he did so by deflecting a puck that was over his head. It was an easy goal to waive off, and no one argued. Click here to read more from Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.
