Family-run florist refuses to pay for shop's shocking rose-coloured makeover - as townsfolk mock the unfortunate results online

A family-run florist refused to pay for its shop shocking rose-coloured makeover as townspeople mocked the results online. Robert's Florist, located in the historic mining town of Brynmawr, opted to revamp the store painting a fluorescent pink in a bid to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. But a row has since erupted between the florist and its decorator, Royal Shine after the building was left half-painted. Florist Sarah Jane Evans Nicklon, 41, said she knew there would by issues with the job being done, despite having purchased 36 tubs of the 'Pink Ribbon Care' colour. Florist Sarah Jane Evans Nicklon, 41, said of the job, which was started five weeks ago: 'We were really excited for the project and then from day one we had concerns about how the job was being done. 'There was no cleaning of the building, the walls weren't treated and the contractor said that they would start from the top and work their way down, but they did the opposite. 'The windows weren't sanded down and the masonry paint was directly applied. There was no clean-up after every day as promised. 'Despite many efforts of us raising our concerns with the contractor many mistakes were made, and we felt we had no choice but to terminate the contract before any more damage was done to our property.' But now her decorating nightmare has been turned into an online meme, with AI generated images being shared poking fun at the unique colour. Some mocked the shop by suggesting the town's streets should be repainted different shades of pink in a petition. While other photoshopped pictures depicted the local ASDA and cars covered in a striking pink colour. And the florist has taken the jokes in their 'stride' because of the positive comments from people, Sarah said. 'There's been phone calls, customers coming in off the street saying it'll be lovely when it's done properly,' she said. 'We just want it to be a happy time and not a sad time it's been really stressful I didn't want it to affect my staff.' Robert's Florist claimed they refused payment because of the early termination. They have since hired a new contractor to finish the job. Royal Shine responded in a statement online: 'We have been recently painting the Robert's Florist Brynmawr in Brynmawr and what a shocking experience from start to finish* 'From the start we had a good interaction and really high hopes with the job. Started well and we was going along nicely. And the florist has taken the jokes in their 'stride' because of the positive comments from people, Sarah said. 'But from the start never had a word in. The owner wanted everything done his way or no way which we can do that but won't look right as we do it in sections. 'We listened to him and this is what happened. I definitely would not recommend anyone doing work for these people.' The post added that the company was 'overall very shocked' by the experience and noted that the company had 'paint[ed] hundreds of houses or buildings' - and also worked with some of the 'biggest' companies in the UK.

New drive-through Burger King set to create 84 jobs

PLANS for a drive-through Burger King in Brynmawr have been given the green light by councillors despite objectors arguing that it will be bad for people's health. At a meeting of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council's Planning committee on Thursday, June 5 councillors received a planning application by Starburst limited for a drive through Burger King, a pizza restaurant/takeaway, and a tanning 'shop' on land at Blaina Road in Brynmawr. The development could create 84 full and part time jobs, Planning officer Joanne White explained that outline planning permission had been granted in 2018 for a nearby Costa Coffee drive through which also included building 25 houses on the site. Ms White said: 'But the residential part of the permission has never been implemented and has since lapsed.' Bid to turn building back into a pub falls short in planning appeal Long-running neighbour dispute over access to a lane finally resolved She believed it would be 'unlikely' that a housing scheme would ever be built there and recommended that councillors approve the plans. Cllr Jules Gardner (Labour) one of the county councillors for Brynmawr spoke against the proposal and said that he and his fellow ward councillors had received a 'plethora' of complaints from people against the proposal. Cllr Gardner said: 'This project will provide no new experiences or facilities but offers purely a duplication of existing services, more fast food outlets, another burger bar and pizza parlour only 100 metres from an existing drive-through McDonalds.' He added that the development could also cause more antisocial behaviour, traffic congestion and have a detrimental impact on the town centre. Objector Chris Nottingham said: 'The proposal would undermine our collective efforts to improve population health and in particular children's in Blaenau Gwent. 'Our local stats are shocking, over a quarter of our children are overweight or obese. 'The top six diseases for general population in Blaenau Gwent are all linked to poor diet in particular type-2 diabetes cardio-vascular disease and certain cancers. He believed planning policy 'can' be used to support improving health. Mr Nottingham said: 'We cannot do this by allowing the clustering of fast food takeaways especially near schools and areas with high deprivation. 'We're way above the average for fast food density and this is not by accident, the business model exploits the economic vulnerabilities of communities and deepens health inequalities.' The meeting was then opened up to comments and questions from committee members. Cllr George Humphreys (non-aligned – Independent) asked: 'What support would be put in place to help and support the added pressures on local doctors and health service due to this.' Development management team manager Steph Hopkins said: 'It would be unfair to assume that this development is going to have a direct impact on the health service. 'I don't think we would be looking for a financial contribution here to put towards health services.' Cllr David Wilkshire (Labour) said: 'It's a difficult one for planning but we have to consider the health of the community in general.' 'There's lots of things that could be developed on that site which could be more useful to the community.' With the belief that the development would cause extra traffic congestion Cllr Wilkshire believed this would 'add another burden' on the town and he would vote against it. Mrs Hopkins stressed: 'There's been ample opportunity over the years for the market to come forward with alternatives including housing. 'Clearly this site has not been an attractive proposition.' 'There are no local or national policies which restricts the provision of fast food takeaways. 'It's not the function of planning policy to dictate consumer choice. 'Consuming food from a fast food restaurant can form part of a balanced diet in moderation, there are also healthier options provided these days.' She added that people also have the choice of walking or cycling there. The committee then went to a vote which saw four councillors vote in favour of the proposal and two against.

Record-breaking snooker star Jackson Page launches new side hustle after landing £147,000 bonus

SNOOKER star Jackson Page has put his historic £147,000 prize money to good use - and opened up his own shop. The 23-year-old made history earlier this year after becoming the first player ever to compile TWO 147 breaks in the same pro match. Page achieved the feat during a World Championship qualifying win over Allan Taylor in April. The Welsh star bagged a £147k bonus for his trouble - a figure he later described as "life-changing". Page declared he will use some of the cash to get on the housing ladder. But he's also poured some of the bonus into a new business venture. Page is now the proud owner of a trading card and collectables shop. He opened AJs Trading Cards in Brynmawr, south Wales, late last month. The store stocks collectables and toys ranging from Pokémon card to Lego. Page told the WST earlier this year: "Everyone on tour knows that I am really into collectable stuff like Pokémon Cards and other things. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK "I just decided it would be great to open up a shop as a bit of a thing on the side. "'It is a bit of an interest for me and something I like to do when I'm not focusing on snooker. "It has been a brilliant experience seeing it open up, I obviously can't work in there as I'm a snooker player but I've got someone to work there and it is a good hobby to have. "We've got all sorts of things in there like Lego sets and Plushies, as well as the trading cards. "We've got a few cards in there worth over £2,000. The most valuable and rare Pokémon card we have is called a Moonbreon." Page is currently ranked as the world No.33. He turned pro in 2019 and this year reached his first final at the Championship League. Despite bagging the huge 147 jackpot, Page claimed he would have swapped the money for a place at the Crucible. The Welshman narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Worlds, losing 10-7 to Joe O'Connor on Judgement Day. Page said: "Obviously the titles mean more than the money, so I'm still gutted. "You've got a chance of winning if you're there and I was here to win the tournament. I'm not now. 'I know this might sound silly but I think I'd rather be at the Crucible. 'Last year I was hammered (by Ronnie O'Sullivan) but I was there. I would like to end there, but I've just got to say to myself that I don't want to play at qualifying again."
