(AP Photo/Laurence Kesterson) BALTIMORE (AP) — The New York Mets recalled 23-year-old utility man Luisangel Acuña from Triple-A Syracuse before Thursday's split doubleheader against Baltimore. The brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., Luisangel Acuña went 13-for-45 (.286) for Syracuse after the Mets optioned him in late June. Advertisement Capable of playing second base, shortstop or the outfield, Acuña had batted .241 in 65 games before going to the minors. 'He was a big part of this team the first couple of months,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters of Acuña. 'We got to a point where we felt like, 'Hey, let's get him some everyday playing time. 'And now it's time for him to be back up here, continuing to help us win baseball games." In a corresponding move, the Mets designated outfielder Travis Jankowski for assignment. Acuña was on the bench for New York's first game of the doubleheader. ___ AP MLB:

Phillies Activate Bryce Harper Off Injured List Ahead of Padres Game
Phillies Activate Bryce Harper Off Injured List Ahead of Padres Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have been without first baseman Bryce Harper since the beginning of June. He went onto the injured list with a wrist injury and has been slowly working his way back. And finally, ahead of the San Diego Padres game, the Phillies announced some good news. Advertisement According to the Phillies, they have activated Harper off the injured list and designated for assignment utility man Buddy Kennedy. Harper is back on the active roster, and the Phillies, in the time he missed, got back out to a 1.5 game lead over the New York Mets for the NL East division. Harper missed three and a half weeks, but the Phillies stayed afloat, even amid an atrocious series against the Houston Astros. Now facing the team where Harper had the swing of his life against, he's back on the roster and ready to go. While the Phillies built a lead in the NL East, Harper's return to the lineup is a much-needed boost. The offense has been struggling, and Harper's return should inject a much-needed spark into the offense. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper (3) is congratulated by teammates in the dugout after scoring a run against the Athletics during the first inning at Sutter Health Lee-Imagn Images Before landing on the injured list, Harper was hitting .258 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs. While not his best production, he was still one of the Phillies' best hitters. Harper's .814 OPS is the second highest on the team, behind only Kyle Schwarber. Advertisement Adding his bat to the lineup will be a huge addition, and one that the Phillies' offense has sorely needed amid their struggles this month. Fortunately, the Phillies have been able to win games in Harper's absence thanks to incredible pitching from the whole rotation. Now, back in the lineup, the Phillies look to rekindle their dimming offense against the Padres with Harper back in the fold. The 32-year-old is back for the Phillies, just in time to try and separate themselves from the Mets in the NL East. Bryce Harper activated as Phillies get set for Monday game vs. Padres; See lineups
PHILADELPHIA – Bryce Harper has been activated as the first-place Phillies open a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park June 30 against the San Diego Padres. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. As usual, Harper will bat third and play first base. Advertisement Harper hasn't played since June 5 at Toronto as he received treatment for right wrist inflammation. He got back in the batter's box over the weekend in Atlanta, taking batting practice June 27 and swinging against two minor-league pitchers summoned by the Phillies June 28. "It feels way better than where I was three weeks ago, four weeks ago," Harper said before the game against San Diego, "so I'm happy with where we are. Ultimately it's gonna come down to how I feel each day." Harper and the Phillies will continue to monitor his health and determine when and if he might need a break. Bryce Harper bats against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park. "After he was done Saturday, he felt really good," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. "The timing looked good, bat speed looked good. I said 'All right, let's check in tomorrow' and he recovered great." Advertisement In a corresponding roster move, Buddy Kennedy was designated for assignment. "I didn't think I was gonna take any other steps forward of feeling better," Harper said of his decision to return. "I felt we were at a standstill of feeling the same the last couple days. From BP to live and things like that, it kind of gave us the same results each day so I thought today was a good one [to return]." Harper is slashing .258/.368/.446 with nine homers and 34 RBI in 57 games this year. "It makes our lineup a lot longer," Thomson said of Harper being part of it again. "It gives us another guy who is selective and understands the strike zone. It's gonna put some more slug in the lineup." Advertisement "I'm just gonna play my game and go out there and do my thing," Harper said, "I can't really worry about [reaggravating the injury]." Zack Wheeler takes a 7-3 record and 2.45 ERA, second best among National League starters, into his 17th start of the season. Wheeler's 12 quality starts rank third in the National League. His 126 strikeouts are second best in the NL. Matt Waldron, recently summoned from Triple-A, will make his first big-league start this season for the Padres. Image Source: Getty B ryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies has been activated from the 10-day injured list. The two-time MVP has missed out on 22 matches for right wrist inflammation since June 6. A good indicator came over the weekend when Harper, who joined the team at Atlanta, took some live batting practice on Saturday at Truist Park and appeared ready. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said to the Associated Press, 'He was great. Looked like he got his bat speed, and his timing looked fine.' Bryce Harper's return from wrist injury boosts Phillies' lineup The 32-year-old Bryce Harper played in 57 games this season before his right wrist injury. Although he attempted to play through it for a while, the pain ultimately became too much, and he was placed on the injured list. The Phillies went 12-9 without him, still afloat in the tightly packed waters of the National League. Statistically, Bryce Harper has a respectable slashline of .258/ .368/ .446 this season with .814 OPS. He has 9 HRs, 34 RBIs, 13 doubles, 35 walks, 32 runs, and 8 steals in 253 plate appearances. And since the Phillies are in the midst of a gauntlet stretch that will make them face a significant number of teams still jockeying for playoff positioning, it was going to be so vital for the Phils to get him back into the lineup. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed!
