PETALING JAYA: Rolling road closures will be implemented in Kuala Lumpur and other affected areas in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said in a statement on Friday (July 4) that the closures would take place from July 8 to July 11. "Roadblocks will be conducted in stages at three highways and 15 main roads around the Klang Valley. 'A dry run for the motorcade — covering routes from the airports to the respective hotels in Kuala Lumpur and the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre — will be carried out from July 4 to July 6. This will involve around 391 traffic policemen and officers,' he said. He advised road users to plan their journeys in advance and to use public transportation where possible. 'Commercial and heavy vehicles are advised to avoid entering the city centre during the road closure period, especially during peak hours, to prevent congestion and reduce the risk of accidents and breakdowns. 'The public is urged to cooperate with the police on the ground. Their cooperation is greatly appreciated, as it will reflect the nation's image as one with disciplined and courteous road users,' he said. Among the affected roads are the MEX Highway, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Jalan Ampang and Jalan Bukit Bintang. Traffic flow in several parts of Kuala Lumpur is expected to be disrupted during the 58th AMM, which is scheduled to take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11. Phone use while driving flagged as top accident cause

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. - AI-generated image KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has recorded over 3.14 million road accidents in the past six years, averaging around 1,720 cases daily, according to police data. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri said most crashes were due to reckless or inattentive driving, particularly mobile phone use behind the wheel. He told Utusan Malaysia that common causes also include loss of control, failing to observe junctions, and ignoring nearby vehicles or animals. Annual statistics show fluctuating trends, with 2020 and 2021 recording lower figures due to pandemic-related movement restrictions. Reported cases were 567,516 in 2019, 418,237 in 2020, 370,286 in 2021, 545,588 in 2022, 599,967 in 2023, and 638,060 in 2024. Despite the rising number of accidents, fatal crash rates have declined due to increased enforcement and targeted operations. Mohd Yusri said the recent 'Ops Lancar' operation cut fatal cases during the Haj holiday from 84 last year to 58 this year. He added that new enforcement strategies and public awareness campaigns are helping improve road safety nationwide. The department has also prioritised investigation efficiency and transparency since he took over the role. Malaysians are urged to remain focused on the road and avoid distractions, particularly mobile phones, to reduce preventable accidents. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 6,369 crashes recorded over four days of Op Lancar

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 6,369 accidents were recorded during the four-day Op Lancar road safety operation from June 6 to 9 in conjunction with the Aidiladha festive period. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the figure represents an increase of three per cent or 181 cases compared to the same period last year. He said there were 58 fatal accidents recorded this year, compared to 84 cases last year — a decrease of 26 cases. 'The number of deaths also showed a drop to 78 cases, compared to 88 deaths during the same period last year,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Yusri said out of the total number of accidents, 6,120 cases involved vehicle damage, a slight increase compared to 5,854 cases last year. 'JSPT is committed to law enforcement to ensure the safety of road users and that traffic regulations are adhered to by all parties. 'Disciplined road users who practise responsible behaviour can help minimise the risk of accidents, in addition to achieving the target of reducing road deaths and injuries,' he said.
