Matt Henry takes six wickets as Black Caps dominate Zimbabwe
Matt Henry Photo: PHOTOSPORT Seamer Matt Henry took six wickets as the Black Caps bowled out hosts Zimbabwe for 149 on the opening day of the first test at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo before scoring 92-0 in reply to trail by 57 runs. The 33-year-old Henry took three wickets before lunch and three more after the opening session to finish with figures of 6-39 off 15.3 overs as the tourists dominated, with spinner Nathan Smith making a significant contribution with 3-20. New Zealand opener Devon Conway scored an unbeaten 51 and Will Young 41 not out at stumps as they began their reply, looking to set the foundation for a significant first innings lead. Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat but were 67-4 at lunch as Henry dismissed their top order cheaply. Zimbabwe, coming off a pair of heavy defeats at home by South Africa in the last six weeks, were unable to put together any significant partnerships with the highest being 54 runs for the sixth wicket between captain Craig Ervine and Tafadzwa Tsiga. Ervine top scored with 39 before Smith trapped him leg before wicket. The spinner also had Tsiga lbw for 30. New Zealand were without captain Tom Latham , who failed to recover from a shoulder injury, and Kane Williamson, who opted out of the two-test series, leaving Mitchell Santner to take the reins for his first test as captain. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe have added batter Brendan Taylor to their squad for the second test after he completed a three-and-a-half-year suspension imposed for breaching the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping codes. Taylor, 39, was banned in 2022 after admitting receiving US$15,000 (NZ$25,300) from an Indian businessman in 2019. He had retired from international cricket in September 2021. He admitted taking cocaine while in India and claimed this was later used to blackmail him into spot-fixing, though he denied going through with any fixes. Taylor has played 34 test matches since making his debut against Sri Lanka in 2004, scoring six centuries and 12 half-centuries. With 9 938 international runs across all formats, he is Zimbabwe's third-highest run-scorer. -Reuters

Fast bowler Matt Henry has finished with figures of 6-39 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 149 in their first Test match against New Zealand in almost nine years. Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine, who won the toss, wanted his top-order batters to put runs on the board but instead the home team were dismissed inside two-and-a-half sessions on the opening day for their second-lowest innings total this year. New Zealand were 0-92 when stumps were drawn in Bulawayo, with Devon Conway unbeaten on 51 after completing his 12th Test half century and Will Young also looking solid on 41 not out. The return of Brian Bennett, Ben Curran and Sikandar Raza in the longer format of the game did not help against the incisive bowling of Henry as he consistently challenged the batters with his intriguing line and lengths. But on Wednesday New Zealand missed two catching opportunities when top scorer Ervine (39) and Tafadzwa Tsiga (30) both got dropped early in their innings. Despite getting second chances, both batters struggled during the 54-run partnership against the immaculate Henry and Nathan Smith (3-20), with third seamer Will O'Rourke also going for just two runs an over in his 13 overs. Mitchell Santner, captaining the Black Caps for the first time in the absence of injured Tom Latham, hoped his three fast bowlers would get the most out of a soft pitch after he lost the toss and was asked to field first. And Henry didn't disappoint. He got the outside edges of Bennett (6) and Curran (13) during his impressive opening spell of seven overs. He then found the outside edge of Nick Welch (27) at the stroke of lunch to leave Zimbabwe rocking at 4-67. Smith had reduced Zimbabwe to 3-31 when in-form Sean Williams (2) chopped a short ball back onto his stumps. Raza lasted for only two runs in his return to the longer format as he fell soon after lunch when he tried to fend Henry's sharp short ball and lobbed an easy catch to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell. Henry polished off the tail quickly as Santner pounced on a diving catch and held on to a leading edge of Blessing Muzarabbani after Newman Nyamhuri had been caught by Young.

I've put in an immense amount of work — from fitness to the technical side to diet — and I'm feeling a lot leaner, fitter and mentally stronger. That's only been possible through sobriety.' The International Cricket Council banned Taylor in Jan. 2022 after he admitted to four charges under the anti-corruption code stemming from an incident in 2019 when he said he accepted $15,000 from businessmen in India, who asked him to fix international games. Taylor claimed he took the money but never fixed any games. He also was found guilty of an anti-doping offense after testing positive for the stimulant Benzoylecognine, which is a cocaine metabolite. Taylor has undergone a thorough rehabilitation program and has according to ZC, the former captain has 'consistently demonstrated a sincere commitment to personal growth, accountability and restoring trust.' 'Brendan has endured an incredibly difficult chapter in his life and shown genuine remorse, coupled with a powerful determination to make things right – not just for himself but for the good of the game in Zimbabwe,' ZC managing director Givemore Makoni said. Taylor has played 34 test matches for Zimbabwe since making his debut in 2004 that include six centuries.
