Burundi and Egypt celebrate inauguration of JIJI hydroelectric power plant - Foreign Affairs
In a landmark event for regional development and energy access in East Africa, the Government of Burundi officially inaugurated the JIJI Hydroelectric Power Plant, a transformative project supported by Egypt through its leading private sector, ORASCOM Construction. Presiding over the inauguration ceremony, Burundi's President Évariste Ndayishimiye hailed the JIJI–Mulembwe hydroelectric project as a strategic milestone, underscoring its contribution to the country's National Development Plan 2040 and its vital role in expanding access to electricity. Before the project, only six percent of Burundi's population had access to energy. Representing the Arab Republic of Egypt, Ambassador Amira Abdelrahim Ali Mostapha reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering commitment to sustainable development across Africa through public-private partnerships. "The JIJI project, realized by ORASCOM, exemplifies Egypt's pledge to support Burundi's development agenda," she said. "It reflects our broader commitment to international, regional, and triangular cooperation." Ambassador Abdelrahim also announced that additional Egyptian companies are preparing to enter the Burundian market, particularly in infrastructure, water, and transport sectors — a move expected to bolster local economic resilience and human development. "I congratulate ORASCOM on their outstanding performance," she added. "As an Egyptian, I take pride in their professionalism and their reputation across Africa. Their projects consistently demonstrate environmental responsibility, social impact, and alignment with the goals of sustainable development." The JIJI–Mulembwe hydroelectric complex, developed with €320 million in financing from the World Bank, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the European Union, is expected to supply up to 235 GWh of electricity annually. The project is expected to benefit more than 15,000 households, 7,000 businesses, and 1,700 industrial facilities, significantly strengthening Burundi's energy security and economic output. Edward Claessen, the EIB's Head of Energy for the region, praised the project as "a major step towards Burundi's energy self-sufficiency," noting its alignment with global goals for clean, reliable, and inclusive energy. The JIJI–Mulembwe complex now stands as a model for South-South cooperation, demonstrating how African expertise and private-sector engagement, backed by multilateral finance, can deliver transformative infrastructure that uplifts communities and anchors sustainable growth. Israeli attack on Iran poses serious threat to region's stability: Cabinet
QNA Doha The Cabinet has reiterated the State of Qatar's strong condemnation and denunciation of the Israeli attack targeting the territory of the sisterly Islamic Republic of Iran. The cabinet describedit a flagrant violation of Iran's sovereignty and security, in addition to a clear breach of the rules and principles of international law. The Cabinet,chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, on Wednesday affirmed that the Israeli attack, which represents a dangerous escalation and a systematic policy of aggression, poses a serious threat to the stability of the region and hinders efforts to reach diplomatic solutions. Warning of the catastrophic regional and international repercussions of the attack, the Cabinet called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibility, intervene urgently and decisively to stop it, reduce all forms of escalation, and reach diplomatic solutions that achieve lasting and comprehensive peace in the region. The Cabinet then took note of the Shura Council's approval of a draft law on persons with disabilities, with the preparation of a draft law to replace Law No. 2 of 2004 regarding people with special needs. Among the objectives of the draft law are ensuring the full and effective participation of people with disabilities in society, enabling them to exercise all basic rights and freedoms on an equal basis with others, ensuring their integration into society and in all areas of life, and ensuring and respecting the rights of children with disabilities and developing their capabilities. The Cabinet approved a draft law regulating the import, export and transit of rough diamonds and referred it to the Shura Council. The Cabinet also decided to approve a draft statute of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's humanitarian funds, a draft memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of transport and transit between the governments of the State of Qatar and the Russian Federation, and a draft letter of intent for cooperation in the field of peace, reconciliation and conflict resolution between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Cabinet wrapped up its meeting by reviewing a report on the results of the participation of the Qatari delegation, headed by HE Minister of Labor, in the first meeting to implement the agreement regulating the recruitment of Burundian workers in the State of Qatar.

The Cabinet also decided to approve a draft statute of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's humanitarian funds, a draft memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of transport and transit between the governments of the State of Qatar and the Russian Federation, and a draft letter of intent for cooperation in the field of peace, reconciliation and conflict resolution between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Cabinet wrapped up its meeting by reviewing a report on the results of the participation of the Qatari delegation, headed by Minister of Labour, in the first meeting to implement the agreement regulating the recruitment of Burundian workers in Qatar.

Burundi's President Ndayishimiye Wins 100% of Seats in National Vote
Rabat – President Evariste Ndayishimiye's CNDD-FDD party has secured 100% of the seats in the vote for the national legislative assembly. The election results were announced on Wednesday, June 11, by the electoral commission. This vote has been termed by opposition parties as the 'death' of Burundian democracy. The ruling party has won the election, despite the country currently being in an economic crisis with chronic shortages and rising inflation. This is despite the electoral commission stating that no fraud was uncovered, and the President's party winning 100% of the vote in many electoral districts. This election has been seen as the end of democracy in this African nation. Ndayishimiye has been the president of the African state since 2020, following the death of Pierre Nkurunziza, who served as the ninth president of Burundi for almost 15 years from August 2005 until his death in June 2020 Observers have criticized Ndayishimiye consistently for human rights abuses. Burundians went to the polls to vote for the new National Assembly on 5 June. The number of seats in the National Assembly is around 103. Many observers criticized the election for the tightly controlled element of the government, and the opposition has been constrained. Some opposition parties were banned from participation, such as the main opposition party, the National Council for Liberty. Many people in the country felt forced to vote during the election, and several journalists and voters had said that they were in fear for their safety. This is in comparison to the statement given by the president, saying that 'democracy is rooted in Burundi.' On Wednesday, June 11, the electoral commission announced the provisional election results, and unsurprisingly, the CNDD-FDD party won with 96.51%. No other opposition party was able to reach the two percent electoral threshold to gain seats in the National Assembly; therefore, the CNDD-FDD has won 100% of the seats. The final result will be certified at the constitutional court on June 20. International observers and opposition parties have expressed disbelief and anger, rejecting the election result. The leader of the Council of Patriots party stated that 'major fraud had been seen everywhere.'
