What did 49ers QB Brock Purdy think about losing WR Deebo Samuel?

Deebo Samuel would sometimes get frustrated with his role in the San Francisco 49ers offense. Ultimately, after six seasons, Samuel wanted a fresh start, and the Niners needed the cap space, so they traded him to the Washington Commanders in March. Now, Samuel will catch passes and take handoffs from the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Jayden Daniels. But for the past three seasons, his quarterback was Brock Purdy. And despite Samuel's frustration at times in San Francisco, it was never with Purdy. Samuel liked playing with Purdy and the quarterback felt the same. In a recent appearance on the "Bussin With The Boys" podcast, Purdy opened up about Samuel's departure. "It sucks, dude," Purdy said of Samuel's departure, via Peter Panacy of Niner Noise. "He's my boy. I love Deebo." "Day one, he's always had my back and believed in me when I got in," Purdy continued. "I didn't really know how the guys were going to take it when I did get thrown in. Jimmy [Garoppolo] went down, I was the last quarterback, and Deebo was nothing but just great to me, dude, building me up, and just giving me confidence. In games, we fed off each other's energy and building each other up. It was awesome, and over the last couple of years, same thing. So, we created just a great relationship. He's my brother." Samuel's departure from San Francisco was handled well by both sides. Samuel and the 49ers said all the right things. However, some 49ers, including Purdy and tight end George Kittle, made their feelings on Samuel clear. Earlier this offseason, a video appeared on social media of Samuel at Washington's OTAs. The poster of the video implied that Samuel was either out of shape or not giving it all on the route. Kittle was having none of it. While Purdy will miss Samuel, part of the reason the Niners traded the former Pro Bowl wideout was to free up money to extend the fourth-year quarterback. In addition to trading Samuel, the 49ers also moved on from several other key performers this offseason.

Chiefs' Travis Kelce: ‘I Failed Last Year in a Lot of Different Ways for My Guys'

Travis Kelce made his 10th Pro Bowl and the Kansas City Chiefs made yet another Super Bowl appearance last season, yet he spent much of his recent podcast appearance on "Bussin With The Boys" discussing all the things he did wrong in 2024. "I failed last year in a lot of different ways for my guys on the field, in terms of being a leader and just being prepared and ready to rock," Kelce said. "And I'm motivated to f---ing be accountable." The Chiefs had a tumultuous season, which included 11 one-possession victories but a 40-22 blowout loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. The Kansas City offense ranked 17th in total yards and 15th in points per game — far off the torrid pace from the beginning of the team's dynasty. And Kelce's numbers have similarly declined. His 823 receiving yards last season mark only his second time below 1,000 over the past nine years. In the Super Bowl, he had four catches on six targets for 39 yards. Kelce's frustrations with himself sounded layered. "I don't think I was the best leader during the Super Bowl itself in terms of making plays, being able to find a way no matter what the defense was playing. I've always put the accountability on myself to get open no matter what," Kelce said. "I had a drop early. I had two or three routes where I didn't get separation when I needed to, and [there were] certain moments where I could have sped it up knowing that Pat [Patrick Mahomes] was under duress for a lot of points in the game." He added: "And then just keeping the energy and the belief alive — I don't know if I necessarily did that as well as I could have. And I think just leading up to it, making sure I got everybody's mentality ready going into the game." Kelce's reflections on the year included the 2023 offseason that he spent jet-setting around the world with girlfriend Taylor Swift. Kelce's celebrity status had been building progressively, which was natural given he now has five Super Bowl appearances in six years. From talk show appearances to commercials to acting roles, Kelce has done his fair share of exploring non-football activities. And the 2023 offseason was his busiest, not surprising for someone dating one of the biggest celebrities in the world. "The biggest thing is, you just kind of refocus on where your attention is in the offseason," Kelce said on the "Bussin With The Boys" podcast this month. "I think last year that — really the past three years — I've had a lot of attention in taking a step away from football to figure out what I'm doing afterwards, and make sure I set that up, and I'm setting myself up for the future. I've kind of always had that mentality in the offseason, but I took on bigger projects this year. "I don't want to leave anything out there. I want to give it my all and make sure that I do this for the childhood dream in me — the kid in me that's like, 'Man, I want to make this s--- the best thing ever.'" The Chiefs will not be out of Super Bowl contention in 2025. Their coaching staff hasn't changed. Their defense is similar to last year's unit — though not the same without safety Justin Reid or DT Tershawn Wharton. And the offense, if everyone is healthy this season, should improve. Receiver Rashee Rice is coming back from a knee injury, Xavier Worthy is entering his second year, and Hollywood Brown is entering his second year in the Chiefs' system. As for Kelce, who's entering his age-36 season, he is willing to admit that he's not an ascending player anymore. "As I'm getting older, I can't necessarily do a lot of the things that I've been able to do when I was a younger player," he said. "So it's creating even more frustration for me, in certain times." His production has declined over the past three seasons. It seems Kelce is trying to fend off continued decline, in part with a focus on technique. He has lost weight — though he wouldn't specify how much. Even with these adjustments, his age is catching up with him. And his contract expires in the coming offseason. There were rumblings that Kelce might retire after Super Bowl LIX. And there will be more rumblings that this year will be his last. "I think I just had a sour taste in my mouth immediately [after the Super Bowl], and like, 'Man, this can't be the last game,'" he said. So Kelce is back — and with a sense of urgency and self-evaluation that perhaps he didn't have last year. Travis Kelce Breaks Silence on Retirement Decision Ahead of 2025 NFL Season

Travis Kelce Breaks Silence on Retirement Decision Ahead of 2025 NFL Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. July is here, which means NFL training camps are right around the corner. All 32 teams are gearing up for a shot at the ultimate prize, winning the Super Bowl in early February. Advertisement One of the big offseason storylines has been whether Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce would return for another year or call it a career. The Chiefs came up short in Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles, and now, as another season approaches, Kelce looks like he's ready to run it back. Appearing on the "Bussin' With The Boys" podcast earlier this week, Kelce discussed the retirement rumors. While he considered it, Kelce made it clear he's all in for 2025. "Man, I want to make this [expletive] the best thing ever." Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Kelce talked about how the Super Bowl loss left him unsettled and contributed to his hesitation about the future. Advertisement 'It might have made me think about it a little bit more, I think. I just had a sour taste in my mouth immediately, and like man, I can't—this can't be the last game, you know?' He also addressed how his body feels at this point in his career and what it takes to keep performing at a high level. "I still feel like I can do it, and I kind of wanted to give myself that full focus. When I looked back at the year and how I prepared, it's not like I was doing it wrong, but I want to give it everything." Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Biggerstaff-Imagn Images At 35, Kelce knows the physical demands of the NFL don't get easier. "When you get older, you start to figure things out differently. Your body doesn't respond like it used to. You have to focus more on preparation and recovery. During the week, you need a plan to get back to 100%. Thinking about all that, I just didn't want to leave anything on the table." Advertisement So, what's left for Kelce to accomplish? "I want to give it my all and do this for the childhood dream in me, you know what I mean?" Kelce still has one year on his 2-year, $34.2 million contract to give it his all to solidify his status as one of the greatest to ever play the position. He's a three-time Super Bowl champion, four-time first-team All-Pro, ten-time Pro Bowler, and a member of the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team. He also co-hosts the popular podcast "New Heights" with his brother Jason, frequently discussing everything from football to his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Ex-NFL star Will Compton reveals truth behind viral Taylor Swift photo after backlash from popstar's fans

Former NFL star and 'MAGA' podcaster Will Compton has opened up on the viral photo with Taylor Swift which left her die-hard legion of Swifties furious last month. Swift angered her fans when she was seen hanging out with Compton and another ex-football player in Taylor Lewan - who host the 'Bussin With The Boys' podcast together - while out in Nashville with boyfriend Travis Kelce. The sight of the popstar flexing her muscles next to Compton and Lewan sparked outrage due to their association with Donald Trump, who appeared on their podcast ahead of last year's election and even gave them a shout out after winning it. Dana White also namechecked the podcast for helping propel Trump to victory over Kamala Harris, while the duo were also seen shaking hands with him at a UFC event in 2023. Given her long and bitter history with Trump, Swift hanging out with the Bussin With The Boys stars opened her up to criticism. Yet Compton claims he asked Kelce to set up the viral photo after his girlfriend's surprise performance in Nashville. He said about Taylor on his podcast: 'She came off stage from "Shake It Off" and was giving the boys some love, she was like, "I had so much fun out there" and we were like, "You crushed it." 'Taylor and I signed off, and we came back and I leaned over to Trav and was like, "Hey buddy, you know I'm not leaving this place without a pose with you and your girl.' 'He was like, "Oh I've got you,"' Compton said before recreating the flex pose. He then added: 'She was talking s*** afterwards saying she's got more muscles than us... it was a great night.' While it was Kelce who arranged the picture, Swift was heavily criticized by fans online for associating herself with fans of Trump - who recently aimed a bizarre dig at her on his Truth Social account. 'Has anyone noticed that, since I said "I hate Taylor Swift," she's no longer "HOT?"' the president wrote on the platform in an unprovoked attack earlier this year. 'The fact that she still associates with people who are MAGA when Trump himself has personally attacked her…. where the f*** is her self-respect,' one fan said about Swift's photo with Compton and Lewan. 'Imagine being rich enough to make the world a slightly better place... then actively choosing to surround yourself with these thugs instead,' another added. 'What a waste.' 'You are who you surround yourself with,' another Swiftie wrote, while one accused the singer of having 'zero self-respect.' 'When ICE is abducting people from the streets , this is who she chooses to align herself with,' they said. 'Show me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are,' added another. Swift and Kelce had been together in Nashville while the Kansas City Chiefs star was hosting his annual 'Tight End University' event when they crossed paths with Compton and Lewan. The Eras Tour icon even went on stage for a shock performance during the event, sending fans wild with a rendition of 'Shake It Off'.
