Rare Nedbank Cup triumph sparks renewed hope for Kaizer Chiefs fans
Ilyes Mzough (left), the goalkeeper coach of the Mauritanian national team, before being lured away by the opportunity to work alongside a familiar face, Nasreddine Nabi, the Kaizer Chiefs coach. As the dawn of a new season gives way to fresh hopes and aspirations, Kaizer Chiefs' specialist goalkeeper coach Ilyes Mzoughi is brimming with anticipation and determination. With the momentum of last season's rare success, namely winning the Nedbank Cup, Mzoughi understands that the expectations of supporters have grown stronger. 'Having won the Nedbank Cup, our supporters are expecting more trophies and the technical staff share that aspiration,' Mzoughi said, looking towards the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The connection between the team and the country's biggest fan base, he continued, is vital in this quest for continued success. 'Their support is crucial — our unity gives us power,' he added profoundly, in an interview with Mzoughi highlighted the significance of solidarity in achieving their collective goals. His commitment to cultivating a fierce competitive edge in his goalkeepers stems not only from his tactical expertise but also from an understanding of the club's culture and its passionate fans. As the team sets its sights on more trophies, the excitement resonates not just within the squad but also throughout the stands where devoted supporters rally behind the badge. The synergy between the technical staff's aspirations and the passion of the fans is a poignant reminder of what makes football more than just a game; it is a community, a culture, and a shared dream. The Tunisian-Frenchman embodies the demanding nature of football coaching, characterised by a serious work ethic. Yet, it's his lighter side, characterised by an infectious smile and a knack for humour, that endears him to players and staff alike. 'I'm only a call away,' he assures his goalkeepers. The past season was fraught with adversity for the AmaKhosi goalkeepers. Rwanda-born Fiacre Ntwari began as the primary shot-stopper, but injuries struck, including a significant setback for Brandon Petersen, necessitating surgery. This led to Bruce Bvuma taking charge for most of the season, a challenging year where Chiefs finished in a disappointing ninth spot in the league table. "It was a tough season, not only for the goalkeepers but for the whole team,' Mzoughi reflected. 'We were unlucky with injuries and suspensions, impacting the keepers and overall team performance." Despite these hurdles, there were sparkling moments, particularly with Bvuma's 'magnificent save' against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-final and Petersen's impressive final performance. One decision that took many by surprise was Petersen's sudden inclusion in the cup final, overtaking Bvuma, who had been in fine form. Mzoughi shared the reasoning behind this strategy: 'Bruce had a lingering calf injury and wasn't 100% fit. Brandon had been training hard. When I asked if he was ready to play, he confidently replied: 'I am ready!'' The goalkeeper coach believes that the club's passionate fanbase can sometimes be overly critical. 'We must be realistic and support them,' he noted. 'Our supporters can be demanding, and rightfully so, but it is essential for them to show love and support, no matter who is in goal. We are one family!' Mzoughi's journey in football began at the age of six in Tunisia. He initially played as a defender before fate led him to become a goalkeeper. His career took him across Europe and into the Gulf region, where he honed his coaching skills after a successful stint playing professionally. Most recently, he served as the goalkeeper coach for the Mauritanian national team before being lured away by the opportunity to work alongside a familiar face, Nasreddine Nabi, at Chiefs. In his coaching approach, Mzoughi is notably meticulous. 'Not only are our games recorded, but also training sessions," he explained. This extensive review process allows him to assess weaknesses for improvement, ensuring a scientific approach to enhance tactical and fitness levels. 'We prepare sessions based on discussions with the head coach, tailoring our tactics depending on the game plan," Mzoughi elaborated. His penchant for honesty is another hallmark of his coaching style. "Better one word straight to the face than ten words behind someone's back,' he quipped, underscoring his belief in forthright communication.

Kaizer Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi questions Bruce Bvuma's commitment
Bvuma lacks heart Kaizer Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi has given his opinion on the club's goalkeeping situation, where Bruce Bavuma is the incumbent number one. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix South African football icon Brian Baloyi doesn't believe Kaizer Chiefs' incumbent number one Bruce Bvuma has the heart to play for the club. Baloyi came through the ranks at Kaizer Chiefs in the 1990s, and became one of the best players as they won a host of competitions, earning the nickname 'Spider-Man' during a 11-year-stay with the club. After he left, he was replaced by Rowen Fernandez and later Itumeleng Khune, as the club's goalkeeping situation was in safe hands for almost two decades. However, in recent years, Chiefs have struggled to find some consistency in between the sticks. Last season, a number of players were entrusted with the gloves, and Bvuma beat out Fiacre Ntwari and Brandon Peterson for the starting job. Speaking on iDiski Dine, Baloyi said Bvuma doesn't have what it takes to play for big clubs like Chiefs or Pirates. 'You look at Bruce (Bvuma) he has gotten the best training that any kid can ever get (because) he started in the juniors with proper training, but he doesn't have a big heart,' said Baloyi, who was capped 24 times at international level. 'He doesn't have the presence, for Pirates and Chiefs. For me, when I look at a goalkeeper, a goalkeeper with talent and technique and stuff, I would overlook them over a goalkeeper that has raw talent. 'If you look at Bruce, yigwala (coward).' Baloyi also added that when he was the club's goalkeeper coach back in 2017, he recommended they sign Oscarine Masuluke, but those please went on deaf ears. 'When I was at Chiefs in 2017, Oscarine Masuluke came on trial and when I train him, he said to me, this is the first time I'm getting (proper) goalkeeper coaching,' said Baloyi. 'I looked at him we trained, and he stayed with us for three months. After two months I said to Bobby and Steve (Komphela) sign him they refused. 'And they never understood. And I said to them he has never had goalkeeper training but what he had was presence, and a big heart. 'So, those are some of things that you can overlook over technique especially for a big club.' Kaizer Chiefs transfers: New Bafana goalkeeper
Kaizer Chiefs are anticipated to find and introduce a new goalkeeper for the 2025/26 season. Bruce Bvuma, Brandon Petersen and Fiacre Ntwari earned opportunities but failed to seize them fully. While Petersen and Bvuma signed new deals last season, and Bvuma joined from TS Galaxy last winter, Amakhosi is expected to part ways with at least one of them. Rumours suggest Ntwari could be sacrificed for the purpose of opening up a foreign spot. The Premier Soccer League permits no more than five foreign players on each team. 'Kaizer Chiefs are set to make an enquiry to Sekhukhune United over goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, who has broken into the senior national team,' iDiski Times reported. Kaizer Chiefs midfielder fights drug addiction 'The 27-year-old iKamva graduate earned his way into the Sekhukhune line-up shortly after the arrival of Eric Tinkler and made a huge impression, more notably in the Nedbank Cup, where he pulled off a Man of the Match display in their 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns. The publication further confirmed that Sekhukhune are in no position to lose Learner. 'Babina Noko have since parted ways with veteran goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare and Lloydt Kazapua, and while they are in the market for replacements, the chance of granting a sale to Kaizer Chiefs for Learner remains slim at present,' the outlet concluded. Chiefs' Peterson out to finish the season on a high
'I think we have two (more) cup finals left,' said the Chiefs goalkeeper. Bvuma out, Peterson in for Chiefs Before Saturday, Peterson had not played for Chiefs in 2025, with Bruce Bvuma preferred between the poles. But Bvuma was dropped completely from the squad, and Peterson stepped in with a solid performance. Now the question is whether Amakhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi will stick with Peterson for Chiefs' final two Premiership games of the campaign. Chiefs find themselves in a scrap to qualify for next season's MTN8, on the back of a sorry run of seven Premiership games in a row without a win. Nabi's side play high-flying Sekhukhune United on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, before hosting Polokwane City in their final league match on May 24. 'I think we have two (more) cup finals left. You know, we want to finish this season on a high,' Peterson told SABC Sport after Saturday's triumph. 'We want to end in the top 8 so we have more trophies, more silverware to play for next season … we'll celebrate tonight and then tomorrow it's back to work.' Tight top eight race The race for the top eight currently has five teams within one point of each other from position eight to 12 in the Premiership table. Chiefs are currently ninth on 30 points, behind Chippa United on goal difference, and ahead of Marumo Gallants on goal difference. Richards Bay and Magesi FC are in 11th and 12th respectively on 29 points. The best way for Chiefs to approach their last two games, however, is to focus on themselves.
