Minnesota Vikings plan for secondary emerges early on in training camp

The safety position was one of the stronger, more underrated ones on the Vikings' dominant defense in 2024. With Brian Flores playing 3-D chess with his players, players like Harrison Smith, Joshua Metellus, and Camryn Bynum were a big reason for their success. However, with the departure of Bynum in free agency, folks began to wonder who would fill his spot in the rotation. Purple Daily's Judd Zulgad was in attendance for the team's first training camp practice of the 2025 season and noticed something with the secondary, specifically the safety position. He saw who may be filling into the Bynum role and it is someone who will be tasked with taking on a lot during the most pivotal training camp of his career: Joshua Metellus. Zulgad shared on social media that, "There was no Josh Metellus hold-in on Day 1 of Vikings camp. He took part in all drills. He was used as the starting safety in base opposite Harrison Smith and Theo Jackson replaced him at safety when Metellus moved around." If they use Metellus as the roaming piece, as Zulgad's post suggests they may be doing, Jackson would fit seamlessly into the playmaking role that Bynum found himself in. The defense thrived in the turnovers he was able to force in 2024, and they need them again in 2025 if the team wants to sniff a chance at winning the NFC North.

Cam Bynum on what to expect from new-look Colts defense under Lou Anarumo

Cam Bynum recently highlighted what to expect from the new-look Colts' defense under Lou Anarumo. On a recent appearance on 'The Insiders,' Indianapolis Colts' safety Cam Bynum described what we can expect from this new-look defense under Lou Anarumo, and a lot of it starts with the play style. "I think just a unit playing as one," Bynum said. "I think we're going to play fast, and that's really what I want to bring to this team, just the confidence that we go out there every single time and be able to make this defense our own." During his tenure as Cincinnati's defensive coordinator, Anarumo earned the nickname 'Mad Scientist.' In part, that's a product of the malleability of his defensive scheme. Like any play-caller, Anarumo has core principles that his system is built on, but he's also quick to adjust and will mold the scheme to the skill sets that are on the roster in order to maximize those abilities. Week-to-week things can change as well, based on who the opponent is and what they do well. As Anarumo has described, at the end of the da,y it's about making the quarterback uncomfortable, and part of accomplishing that is throwing a variety of different looks at them. "Coach Lou is super aggressive in the way that he plays and the way that he coaches," Bynum added. "He's letting guys play to our strengths, and that's one thing that I see out of him." As Bynum mentions, this is going to be a more aggressive Colts' defense under Anarumo. There will be more man coverage on the back end, along with a heavy usage of disguised coverages. In the front seven, there will be more blitzing and movement along the defensive line. GM Chris Ballard took some big swings in free agency by signing Bynum and Charvarius Ward to help elevate the play of the defense, but the addition of Anarumo and his defensive system will play a key role in accomplishing that as well. "I know what we're just going to be able to play as a whole unit and know that we're out there playing for each other," Bynum said. "So I think we're going to play as one and just play fast. Be one of those teams that you turn the tape on and can really stand out and be like, this team plays fast and they're playing physical."

Why S Cam Bynum is optimistic about 2025 Indianapolis Colts

Safety Cam Bynum recently explained why he's optimistic about the 2025 Colts. Indianapolis Colts' safety Cam Bynum is optimistic about this team in 2025. On a recent episode of 'The Insiders,' Bynum explained why he feels that way. "I just think we have a solid team overall," Bynum said. "Just every position. You can look and see that there's amazing players at every spot--offense and defense. And for me, I'm biased, looking at the defense I expect a lot out of us with the new DC, with coach Lou being there and just bringing the defense he's bringing with the aggressive play-style and especially the guys up front. "We got pass rushers for days, we got linebackers, our secondary is looking really good, so I just expect a lot out of us." Naturally, when there are question marks at the game's most important position like the Colts have at quarterback, there are unknowns and can be skepticism. But as Bynum highlights, there's also a lot to like about the Colts' roster as well. Around whoever is under center is what should again be a stout offensive line unit. Jonathan Taylor was one of the most productive running backs in football last season, and the Colts added a do-it-all tight end in Tyler Warren. At wideout, the Colts were the only team in football last season to have three players all surpass 800 receiving yards. On the other side of the ball, the Colts boast a deep pass rush rotation, and GM Chris Ballard reshaped the secondary. Lou Anarumo's scheme, which will be more aggressive and disguise-heavy, should help elevate the play of the entire defense and better position players to make plays. I say all of that to say this: the Colts don't need great quarterback play to stack some wins this season. They need steadiness, and the players around the quarterback can help lift his level of play. "Just the hunger I saw from every single person during OTAs and during the mandatory minicamp, added Bynum. "I just see a spark with this team, and for me, being able to come in and hopefully just be a leader and bring my game to this team, I just expect a lot out of us. I just know, overall, we're going to have a great season."

Colts S Cam Bynum weighs in on QB competition with Daniel Jones, Anthony Richardson

Colts' safety Cam Bynum recently shared his thoughts on the QB competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. Indianapolis Colts' safety Cam Bynum recently appeared on 'The Insiders', and among the topics discussed was the team's quarterback competition. "I think this is a great scenario for any quarterback to be in, Bynum told Tom Pelissero. "Obviously, it's an uncomfortable spot because you're competing for one spot, but as a competitor, that's what you want. You don't want things given to you, so both quarterbacks are in there grinding, trying to earn their way to be the starter this year. Both are looking extremely well and playing well in the spring. Bynum continued: "So I'm excited to see how it plays out, but no matter what, as a player on this defense, being able to go up against them, they're giving us challenges and I think no matter who the team picks, and who the leadership picks at quarterback as the starter this season, I'm confident in both." Anthony Richardson would miss most of offseason programs working through a shoulder injury. However, ESPN's Stephen Holde reported that Richardson is "believed to have recovered from his recent right shoulder setback" with training camp almost here. Holder also added that Richardson has been throwing, but that the Colts' medical staff still has to check him out. A "pitch count" early on in practices could still be a possibility. While Richardson was sidelined, Daniel Jones took all of the first-team reps, and from the sounds of it, made the most of those opportunities. Those performances won't determine who the Week 1 starter is, but with fewer reps, Richardson will have to hit the ground running. Regardless of how things shake out with this competition, Bynum is confident in both Richardson and Jones, along with the help that is around each of those players. "I know both can get the job done, especially with the team around," Bynum added. "The O-line that we have, the run game that we can establish, and solid receivers across the board, I know whoever ends up winning it will get the job done and do really well. "But I think it's a good scenario for anybody to really have that pressure to push them forward, and it's going to be a fun training camp knowing that you're going against quarterbacks that are fighting for something, so they're obviously going to be playing as hard as they possibly can."
