Ajit Pawar reviews Akola development works, stresses proper use of funds
Akola: Deputy chief minister of Maharashtra and state finance & planning minister Ajit Pawar conducted a comprehensive review of development projects in Akola and Washim districts on Wednesday. Chairing a meeting at the Planning Bhavan, Pawar directed that the District Planning Committee (DPC) funds be fully utilized for quality and necessary works, ensuring all planned projects are completed by February 2026 without any unspent allocations. Pawar emphasized, "No funds should remain unutilized in the 2025–26 cycle, and quality and deadline compliance must be strictly followed." He was accompanied by state minister for soil and water conservation Indranil Naik, MP Anup Dhotre, MLAs Randhir Savarkar, Amol Mitkari, Vasant Khandelwal, Kiran Sarnayak, Sanjay Khodke, Sajid Pathan, Saibai Dahake, and senior administrative officials including additional collector Pramod Gaikwad, municipal commissioner Sunil Lahane, and SP Archit Chandak. Pawar warned against misuse of DPC funds for unnecessary purchases, stressing timely and efficient execution. "Any irregularity will invite strict action," he said, adding that innovative schemes must result in impactful projects. Reviewing crop loan disbursement, he urged departments to enhance awareness among farmers and ensure benefit delivery under various schemes. The deputy CM directed completion of underground drainage works in Akola with long-term planning for the next 25 years of urban growth. He assured additional funds for municipal projects and emphasized linking PMAY with the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to benefit maximum families. Pawar also promised resolution of pending issues related to the medical college and super-speciality hospital in Akola. Highlighting the transition from the government's 100-day to 150-day program, Pawar urged authorities to expedite implementation of key schemes like PMAY, solar pump distribution, and desiltation of dams and farmlands under 'Galmukt Dharan – Galyukt Shivar'. Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has set a target of planting 10 crore trees this year to create a greener and sustainable future for the state, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said. Tree plantation should become a people's movement, the Chief Minister said after chairing a review meeting for the 'Green Maharashtra, Prosperous Maharashtra' tree plantation campaign on the eve of the World Environment Day on Wednesday. "We've set a target of planting 10 crore trees this year, and will aim for the same next year too, because this is not just about numbers, it's about creating a greener, sustainable future for our state," Fadnavis said in a statement after the meeting. He said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, Maharashtra has consistently led the way by "planting 33 crore and 50 crore trees" in recent years. "We are confident that we'll surpass this year's target as well," the chief minister said. Tree plantation must become a people's movement, he said. "I've urged all departments, local bodies, and social organisations to join hands. The saplings must be 1.5 to 3 years old, and we must ensure their survival and long-term care," Fadnavis said. "We're leveraging AI, remote sensing and satellite monitoring for real-time tracking and transparency. Directed for optimal use of CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) funds to ensure the impact on ground," he said. The forest department will take the lead on plantations along highways and pilgrimage routes, the Chief Minister said. "In view of the upcoming industrial growth, we plan to plant one crore trees in Gadchiroli and intensify efforts in Beed, Latur and Jyotiba hills where the tree cover needs urgent attention," he said.

Maharashtra CM Fadnavis sets target of planting 10 crore trees this year
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that 10 crore trees will be planted this year under the 'Green Maharashtra, Prosperous Maharashtra' campaign to increase the forest cover in the state. A target for planting another 10 crore trees has been set for next year as well. Fadnavis on Wednesday held a meeting regarding the same emphasising that the campaign will succeed only if tree plantation becomes a public movement and everyone must work together for the same. 'Maharashtra is leading in increasing forest cover in the country. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam', Maharashtra has performed well. To achieve the goal of 33% forest cover, the campaign must continue for the next 20 years in a mission mode. In the past 8 years, Maharashtra has planted a large number of trees, successfully meeting earlier targets of 33 crore and 50 crore saplings. Hence, this year's target is achievable,' he said. Fadnavis suggested planting saplings that are at least 1.5 to 3 years old to ensure survival and growth adding that the efforts should be made to increase the survival rate using modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence, tools like remote sensing and satellite imagery to ensure transparency. Departments have been asked to allocate land and ensure quality saplings for the campaign. Local governing bodies and zilla parishads have been asked to actively participate by involving social organisations. He directed that tree species should be planted based on regional conditions and full use of funds available under CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) should be made for this work. The responsibility for planting trees along national and state highways, as well as the palkhi routes, will now be given to the forest department. Also, with growing industrial development in Gadchiroli district, plans are being made to plant one crore trees there by next year. Additionally, largescale plantation will be undertaken on Jotiba hill. In Marathwada, especially in districts like Beed and Latur, where tree cover is very low, the forest department has been instructed to run special campaigns. The CM also mentioned that the Bamboo Mission should be treated as a mission for all departments and everyone must contribute. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar stated that while planting trees along highways, potential future road expansions must be considered and priority should be given. Forest Minister Ganesh Naik assured that the forest department will plant trees along highways. Full use of CAMPA funds will be made, and the 10-crore tree plantation campaign will be implemented successfully.

Aravalli Green Wall Project: India's theme for this World Environment Day
Aiming to fight climate change, India will promote the Aravalli Green Wall project this World Environment Day to encourage tree plantation, combat land degradation and desertification, and create green corridors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the project on June 5. Last year's theme, 'Ek Ped Maa ke Naam', continues this year. The Aravalli Green Wall Project seeks to revive the Aravalli range through various initiatives such as banning single-use plastics, promoting water conservation, and protecting natural resources. It also aims to combat land degradation and desertification by creating green corridors across 29 districts in four states: Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Delhi. The Aravalli hills landscape spans over 6 million hectares. At the 16th Conference of Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) held in Riyadh, India introduced the Aravalli Green Wall Project, which was launched in 2019. In March, the Environment Ministry released the project's action plan. The project involves planting native species of trees and shrubs on scrublands, wastelands, and degraded forest lands. It also focuses on rejuvenating and restoring surface water bodies such as ponds, lakes, and streams. Additionally, it emphasizes agroforestry and pasture development to enhance the livelihoods of local communities. Through this initiative, India aims to achieve its national goal of creating an additional 2.5 billion tonnes of carbon sink by 2030, as committed in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Under the project, 1,000 nurseries will be established across the 29 districts, with funding from CAMPA, MNREGA, and other state green initiatives to ensure the survival of planted saplings. The green wall will contribute to carbon sequestration and help mitigate climate change, while enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Aravalli range. Planting native tree species will provide wildlife habitat and improve water quality and quantity, contributing to reduced air pollution in India. There will also be socio-economic benefits, according to an official from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). The project will be executed by various stakeholders, including central and state governments, forest departments, research institutes, civil society organizations, private sector entities, and local communities. Success will require adequate funding, technical expertise, policy coordination, and public awareness.
