A shark attack survivor says to do this if you come face to fin with a great white
You're treading cold ocean water off Cape Cod and, suddenly, you're not alone - a great white shark has confused you for a bobbing grey seal, and is hoping for a lucky bite. What do you do? Former Australian Navy diver and shark attack survivor, Paul de Gelder, who lost his right hand and leg in a 2009 Sydney Harbor attack, says the key to ensuring your survival lies in your behavior. First, stay cool and collected, he told 'CBS Mornings' this week - no matter how hard that may be. "I know it goes against all natural instincts of preservation, not to panic, but that's the most important thing you can do," the 47-year-old said. 'You have to understand these sharks don't really know what you are, you're almost the same size as them, and they don't want to fight." Second, he said, be aware of where the shark is at all times by staring the apex predator down. 'They know when you're watching, they don't want to attack you when you're watching" he explained. Lastly, resist the urge to punch the creature — unless you absolutely have to. Pushing the sharks can guide them away from you, but divers advise people not to grab their faces. 'Because under their snouts are highly sensitive pores called the Ampullae of Lorenzini — tiny receptors that detect electrical signals. Touching that area can overstimulate them, causing a shark to reflexively open its mouth wide,' SDM Diving says. However, sharks respect size and power and people should not act passively during an encounter. Beachgoers have gotten away from sharks by taking swings at their noses and eyes. De Gelder tried to do the same, but was unsuccessful. Should the shark become aggressive, shark researcher Ryan Johnson previously told the BBC that people should try to do everything in their power and keep their hands out the animals' jaws. Ideally, they should use something hard to push the shark away. 'In a situation where you don't have that, going for the face and the gills and trying to keep your hands out of its mouth is always the best thing,' he said. Experts at the Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File say people should aim for the eyes and gills, but note that water resistance weakens a punch. Of course, the chance of any of this happening is incredibly remote. A human is more likely to bite you than a shark and a Stanford University report from 2015 found that surfers and scuba divers have a one in 17 million and one in 136 million chance of being bitten, respectively. More often than not, a bite is the case of mistaken identity and potentially the result of low vision in great whites. Last year, the number of unprovoked bites were significantly lower than average, in the U.S. and globally. There were 28 in the U.S., compared to the 36 reported in 2023. Still, to be safe, there are things people can do before they enter the water to minimize their chance of a bite, including not entering the water where there's a lot of fish, not going into the water alone or at dawn or dusk, when vision may be low. De Gelder, who is part of a new Discovery Channel special called 'How to Survive a Shark Attack,' previously told the Australian Broadcasting Company that he was wearing a wet suit and black fins, likely 'looking like an injured seal' to the shark that attacked him. "I want to show people by doing," he told CBS.

‘CBS Mornings' co-host Tony Dokoupil rips Jon Stewart, says ‘one-sided' Stephen Colbert went too left
'CBS Mornings' co-host Tony Dokoupil defended his bosses at the Tiffany Network for axing Stephen Colbert's show — while also taking aim at Jon Stewart for alleging there was a political motive in making the cost-cutting move. Dokoupil, who was famously upbraided by management for a tense on-air debate with author Ta-Nehisi Coates over his book critical of Israel, broke with his co‑hosts on Tuesday to blame Colbert's 'one-sided' commentary for his own cancellation. Dokoupil said on Tuesday that 'no one seems to acknowledge' that 'the politics has also changed' in recent years and that Colbert 'got way more one-sided than anything Johnny Carson was ever doing.' Advertisement 5 'CBS Mornings' co-host Tony Dokoupil defended his bosses at the Tiffany Network for wielding the axe against Stephen Colbert's show. CBS 5 Dokoupil engaged in a tense on-air discussion on Tuesday with fellow co-hosts Gayle King and Vladimir Duthiers. CBS 'I think we should reflect on those changes as well. It's been a big shift culturally in that regard, also for sure,' he said during a tense discussion on the morning show on Tuesday. Advertisement Dokoupil also torched 'Daily Show' host Stewart's claims that Paramount's decision to drop 'The Late Show' was influenced by 'corporate fear.' Stewart's long-running show airs on Comedy Central, which like CBS is a subsidiary of Paramount. On Tuesday's edition of 'CBS Mornings,' co‑host Vladimir Duthiers spotlighted points made in Stewart's monologue in which he defended 'The Late Show,'accusing corporate parent Paramount of feeling its merger with Skydance Media was threatened by Colbert's work. 5 CBS announced that Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show' will cease production next year. AP After the clips of Stewart rolled, Duthiers lamented that despite the 'financials' and 'reality of where linear television is' he was a fan and hated to see the shows go. Advertisement 'I know they're expensive to produce, but they are part of the cultural zeitgeist and they have been part of television since that since the beginning of television, he said. 'So that's why people are reacting the way that they are.' After an audible sigh, Dokoupil cut in to reject Stewart's notion that The Late Show represented a significant part of the merger valuation: 'No, I understand the emotional views. I don't have an MBA but he's not right that the merger, the $8 billion, is based on reruns of a comedy show, no.' 5 Colbert 'got way more one-sided than anything Johnny Carson was ever doing,' according to Dokoupil. REUTERS Advertisement 'People are buying the movies and the sitcoms and the sports,' Dokoupil said. 'They're not based on reruns of us either, so I think it's wrong.' Co‑host Gayle King interjected, defending Stewart's claim that Colbert's show 'contributed to' the merger valuation. 'He's saying it's all encompassing, the whole package,' Duthiers agreed. Dokoupil, however, doubled down. 'Oh, that already happened in the past and he also acknowledged that these late-night shows are what he called like a Blockbuster kiosk inside a Tower Record — so the business is broken,' Dokoupil said. The cancellation of 'The Late Show' came just a week after the network made headlines for its $16 million settlement with President Donald Trump over a '60 Minutes' interview with Kamala Harris that he alleged was deceptively edited. Colbert slammed his bosses at Paramount for what he called a 'big fat bribe' that was paid to Trump. 5 Dokoupil also took issue with criticism from 'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart. Getty Images for Comedy Central Advertisement The Post has sought comment from CBS News, Paramount, Stewart and Colbert. CBS said last week that it will end 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' and retire the entire franchise in May 2026, calling the move 'purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night' and 'not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.' Paramount co-CEO George Cheeks reiterated the financial rationale as industry data show the economics have soured. Broadcast late‑night ad revenue fell to about $220 million in 2024 from $439 million in 2018, and ad spend on 'The Late Show' slid from roughly $121 million in 2018 to about $70 million in 2024 amid shrinking audiences.

‘The Studio' Breaks ‘Ted Lasso' Emmy Record for Most Nominations for a Freshman Comedy Series, Ties ‘The Bear' for Most in History
A fictional studio head has broken the Emmy record. Apple TV+ continues its awards season dominance as its freshman comedy series 'The Studio' shattered records Tuesday, receiving 23 Emmy nominations — the most ever for a comedy series in its first season. It also tied the record set by 'The Bear' last year, as the most nominated comedy series ever. More from Variety Emmy Nominations 2025: Full List (Updating Live) Emmys to Reveal Reality and Talk Series Nominations Early on 'CBS Mornings' Veteran CBS2 Sportscaster Jim Hill to Receive Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award The previous record was set in 2021 by 'Ted Lasso,' another Apple TV+ production, which scored 20 nominations during its debut year. That series went on to win seven Emmys, including three for acting (Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham) and outstanding comedy series. Created by Evan Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, Frida Perez and Seth Rogen — who also directed, wrote and star in the series — 'The Studio' follows an embattled Hollywood studio head struggling to balance corporate demands with his passion for producing quality films. The ensemble cast also includes Catherine O'Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders and Kathryn Hahn. The series received nominations in major categories, including four individual nominations for Rogen — outstanding comedy series, lead actor, writing, and directing. If he wins all four, he would tie the record for most Emmys won by a single individual in one night, joining Moira Demos for Netflix's 'Making a Murderer' (2016), Amy Sherman-Palladino for Prime Video's 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' (2018) and Dan Levy for Pop TV's 'Schitt's Creek' (2020). 'The Studio' has solidified itself as a potential frontrunner for the comedy series statuette. In her review of 'The Studio,' Variety chief TV critic Alison Herman called the show 'a lavish spectacle.' With the success of 'The Studio,' Apple TV+ continues to cement its reputation as a major player in prestige television, particularly in the comedy space. The platform's growing critical acclaim mirrors the rise of other streaming services that have reshaped the awards landscape in recent years. This year's Emmy nominations were announced by actors Harvey Guillén ('What We Do in the Shadows') and Brenda Song ('Running Point') from the Academy's Wolf Theatre. The 77th Emmy Awards will be hosted by Nate Bargatze and broadcast live Sunday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS, as well as stream live and on demand via select packages on Paramount+. Noah Wyle and Adam Scott nominated for first Emmys
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nominations for the Emmy Awards were revealed Tuesday in Los Angeles. Two categories were announced early on 'CBS Mornings' —the nominees for talk series and reality competition series. Actors Harvey Guillen and Brenda Song later announced other nominees. CBS will air the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 14. Nate Bargatze is slated to host. The Latest: Noah Wyle and Adam Scott compete for Emmy No. 1 Noah Wyle and Adam Scott are TV veterans who've never won an Emmy. They're now considered close co-favorites for best actor in a drama after getting nominations — Wyle for 'The Pitt' and Scott for 'Severance.' It's Wyle's sixth nomination. He was up for Emmys five times for playing Dr. John Carter in 'ER' but never won. Now he can get one for playing a very similar character later in life. Scott spent five seasons as a regular on 'Parks and Recreation' but didn't get his first nomination until his starring role on 'Severance.' Does Kathy Bates have a Mat(lock) on best drama actress? Kathy Bates is considered the runaway front-runner for best actress in a drama. It would be a weird one if she goes on to win for CBS' 'Matlock.' She's the first to be nominated in the category from a network show since 2019, when Viola Davis was nominated for ABC's 'How To Get Away With Murder.' She would be the first woman from a network show to win best actress in a drama since 2015, when Davis won, and the first actor in any drama category to win since 2017, when Sterling K. Brown won for NBC's 'This Is Us.' It's the 15th time Bates has been nominated. She's won twice before. Nominees for talk and reality competition series are released early Two categories were announced early on 'CBS Mornings.' The nominees for talk series are 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,' 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' and 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.' The nominees for reality competition series are: 'The Amazing Race'; RuPaul's Drag Race'; 'Survivor'; 'Top Chef' and 'The Traitors.'

Jon Stewart Says ‘MAGA Is in Open Revolt' Against Trump Over Epstein Files: ‘For the First Time in Memory,' MAGA Is Not Giving in to Trump's ‘Reality Distortion Field'
Jon Stewart said on the Monday night episode of 'The Daily Show' that MAGA is in 'open revolt' against Donald Trump over his failure to deliver the long-awaited Jeffrey Epstein files. The FBI and the Department of Justice issued a statement earlier this month saying the Epstein files do not exist despite Pam Bondi, Trump's attorney general, declaring in February that she had been given Epstein's client list from the FBI. Bondi said at the time that 'Americans have a right to know' about the files. 'MAGAworld, for the first time in memory, isn't just slavishly acquiescing to Trump's reality distortion field,' Stewart noted about the rare MAGA backlash against Trump. More from Variety Emmys to Reveal Reality and Talk Series Nominations Early on 'CBS Mornings' European Trade Ministers Alarmed by Trump's EU Tariffs, but Still Trying to Negotiate a Deal The Real Reason Trump Has Hated Rosie O'Donnell for 19 Years 'The Daily Show' host provided video evidence of how Trump misled his supporters, throwing to clips of JD Vance, Kash Patel and Bondi all talking about the Epstein files. 'These are all people who work for Trump that set the expectation,' Stewart said. 'In a few months time, we went from 'the Epstein files will expose the Democrats,' to 'the Epstein files were written by the Democrats and therefore can't be trusted, so let's move on.'' But many Trump supporters are not moving moving on. Stewart showed videos of MAGA crowds booing the news that the Epstein files allegedly do not exist. In another clip, Trump supporters are seen burning their MAGA hats. Even prominent Hollywood conservatives like Roseanne Barr have openly criticized Trump for failing to make good on his promise to release the Epstein files. Barr told the president on X: 'Read the damn room.' 'MAGAworld is now in open revolt,' Stewart said. 'Clearly telling your base to just forget about Epstein isn't working.' Stewart also called out Trump's attempt to distract from his fanbase's outrage by saying he is thinking about revoking Rosie O'Donnell's citizenship. The television icon moved to Ireland after Trump won the election. 'Because of the fact that Rosie O'Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!' Given that Trump cannot revoke the citizenship of someone born in the U.S., his post is all smoke and mirrors. As Stewart told his audience: 'That won't be enough' to quell MAGA outrage over the Epstein files. 'Trump is lying? Dismissing reasonable concerns as bad faith whining? Attacking anyone who disagrees?' Stewart told MAGA. 'The Trump that you're just experiencing now, to your deep disappointment and dismay, is the dude we've been dealing with the whole fucking time… Trump's MAGA base always benefits from favorable treatment, except now. They're finally understanding what it's like to be the target of his hostility.'
