BBC star explains exclusion struggle amid friendship with Emmerdale icon
Charlotte Lynch is a woman of many passions - from football and teaching to acting and singing. But the defender has faced hardship on her way to the spotlight. She's one of the breakout stars of CBeebies' Football Fantastics and nurtures a friendship with an Emmerdale legend, but Charlotte Lynch admits she's sometimes felt "excluded" during her journey to the limelight. England Lionesses Jill Scott, Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead and Ollie Watkins are all suiting up for the new BBC series Football Fantastics . Behind the big names is former Millwall and Leyton Orient player Charlotte Lynch – a talent who's been quietly going from strength to strength. Charlotte uses her voice to make football feel accessible to everyone, and shares joyful messages filled with hope on Instagram. 'I couldn't find a team growing up so I felt excluded," she says. "When my brother played for a boys' team, my mum asked the coach if I could join. 'Eventually, I played for the boys but I was the only girl. You get side-eyed and whispers. But, if it's something you're passionate about, you really have to push through.' Luckily, things have changed. 'I want people to know they are welcome,' she says. 'You don't have to play at an elite level but you can get involved. I'm not better than anyone. I'm a footballer and you can be one, too, if you want to!' Her advice? 'Take a risk on the things you're passionate about – you never know where it could take you." Now, she's bagged her first major role on the small screen, and it feels like everything is falling into place. The new children's comedy show kicks off the BBC's Summer of Sport and the Women's Euros. Set in Ripon, North Yorkshire, the show follows a group of lovable children who meet every weekend for their local football group, where friendships are made and epic adventures unfold. With cameos from household names, catchy songs and big laughs, it was a no-brainer for Charlotte. 'I received the email from the casting team and instantly felt a connection,' Charlotte says. 'I really wanted this job. It's so wholesome, which I love. Everyone can watch it.' On the pitch, she's a versatile defender – and off it, a qualified teacher with a sharp mind for sports science and biomechanics. 'I've been coaching since I graduated from university,' she says. Charlotte has even founded her own girls' football teams in schools, so when the audition came around, she gave it everything. 'I wore all my football gear, I had my equipment, I had cones, and I just put everything into this audition to give me the best chance of getting the job,' she recalls. 'This felt like a perfect fit.' In Football Fantastics, Charlotte plays coach Georgie, a footie fanatic. 'She's reliable, honest. Nothing is ever too much or a problem. She has all the patience in the world and a genuine love for children,' Charlotte says. But there's more to the character than warmth and encouragement. She adds, 'I show a few skills. There's some comedy, a little bit of sarcasm and life lessons.' Filming in Ripon was mostly smooth sailing, although living in a hotel room for two months and facing early mornings wasn't her cup of tea. 'I'm not a morning person,' she confesses. 'But it didn't feel like it was hard because I was so in love with what I was doing. We were all well taken care of and there were footballs on set, so I felt very comfortable.' She also bonded with some well-known faces, including Eva Fontaine and Emmerdale star Samantha Giles. 'I was able to ask them how they prepared. There was a family vibe to the show, it felt very warm and welcoming,' says Charlotte. 'Samantha was my next door neighbour in the trailers. We'd meet at the snack table and chat. She was so easy to speak to and I absorbed everything.' But don't be fooled – acting isn't new to Charlotte. Her love for performing was nurtured by her mum, who was also her school head teacher. 'She was passionate about bringing out your talents and abilities,' Charlotte says. She took part in school plays and later appeared in Remi R.M. Moses' short film Saving Art (2023) as a nurse. 'I did commercials and body doubling, so I was quite familiar with what a set looks like, but acting on TV is a longer-term thing, and these amazing actors helped me.' She has other talents, too, as Charlotte is also a singer, performing in her church choir, at her brother's wedding – and even releasing tracks on Spotify. 'I took a break after moving on to football but I'm going to go back to the studio,' she says. However, football remains top of her list. 'I'm going to play until I'm 100,' she says. 'You can play at any age – you just need a team that suits your needs.'

UK's best fish and chip shop with stunning beach views and seals as dining pals
Cash-only and chip-free this fish and chip shop is one of a kind but absolutely worth the hassle The UK's best fish and chip shop may be somewhat of a schlep but with seals as your dining pals and fish caught directly from the sea in the haunt's very own boat - there's nothing else like it. Cafe Fish on the isle of Mull takes a boat journey and a walk to get to, sitting at the far end of the rainbow coloured Tobermory - the iconic locale of CBeebies' Balamory. Once you've sailed over to Mull itself, which you can do with one short 45-minute hop on the ferry from Oban, Ardnamurchan or Morvern, and walked to the end of the promenade you will find a white cube-shaped building. The tiny restaurant has an upstairs and plenty of indoor seating for the colder months or you can sit and soak up the stunning views of the sea stretching into the horizon. Cafe Fish often sources its own shellfish with its boat 'The Highlander' which will be delivered straight to your table - after a quick dip in a deep fat frier. If you go in the off peak months - you may find an empty restaurant - save for a few seals heads bobbing about in the water. The no-drills cafe is perched atop the old CalMac ferry office on the North Pier - and its menu is a simple blackboard of its self-proclaimed 'fantastically fresh' seafood. Owners and cousins Jane Gill and chef Liz McGougan have two specialities one is crispy whole sea bream with citrus salsa and another is a classic fish stew in spiced Tuscan broth with bread and gremolata. There are also locally grown oysters, fish pies or a grand platter of grilled seafood doused with garlic butter. Although for some the lack of chips will be a let down they are also known for their sourdough pizzas including a lobster thermidor version. They also have Glengorm steaks and a range of desserts such as a rich chocolate pot or warm Belgian waffles. If you fancy something a littler stronger than a Lilt with your fish - Aperol spritz, whisky and fish-friendly white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Sancerre and Verdejos are on offer. The Hebridean town is known for its warm approach to tourists and friendly locals - one review from a punter cannot sing enough of the joint's praises. I had booked Cafe Fish for dinner for the three of us on the day we arrived in Tobermory. The stunning warm weather set the tone, but the location offers a frisson, being at the end of the jetty and so close to the sea and the buzz as we entered was just what we wanted. They gave us a lovely window table. All I can say is that the menu was the most creative and interesting fish menu I have encountered. For all of us it was a truly memorable meal in a fab location. It is recommended that you book if you're going for dinner although they sometimes take walk-ins for lunch. Note that opening times are seasonal – and remember it's cash only.

10 top tips for better sleep for little ones
Bedtime tantrums, separation anxiety and frequent night-time wake-ups are just some of the common challenges parents of young children often face. Sleep disruptions can take a serious mental and physical toll on both children and their caregivers, so to better understand the importance of a consistent bedtime routine, we spoke with Dr Jacqueline Harding, a child development and education expert, and author who consults on many notable children's television programs, like CBeebies' BeddyByes - a pre-school sleep show created by Irish animation company JAM Media. "Some obvious signs of sleep deprivation in children include rubbing their eyes or rolling around on the floor, and sometimes they can become irritable," highlights Harding. "Children generally enjoy life, and they're not going out of their way to make life difficult for parents, but when their emotional integrity is breaking down and they feel this lack of safety and security, then everything begins to look a bit hazy for them. This can affect their memory and their learning, "Sleep deprivation can also erode the fabric of biological life and affect our immune system. So, that hour before bedtime can be used to set children up for a fantastic neurological and biological future." Here are Harding's top 10 tips for helping your little one get a good night's sleep… 1. Create a predictable bedtime routine Young children thrive on rhythm and familiarity, says Harding. "The brain, including little brains, is a predicting organ which uses up a lot of its resources (about 40%) trying to work out its place in the world, and prediction is one of those," explains Harding. "In order to have the security and safety to go to sleep, little ones really do need predictability. "A calm, consistent sequence of events – bath, story, cuddle, sleep – signals to the brain that bedtime is near, helping reduce stress hormones and invite relaxation." It's also important to try and keep to the same bedtime every night when possible, as this can this help cultivate consistency and calmness. "Even on weekends, keeping bedtime and wake time consistent helps regulate a child's circadian rhythm (the body's internal clock), making falling asleep and staying asleep much easier," explains Harding. 2. Limit screen time before bed "The blue light from tablets and TVs can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that helps us feel sleepy," highlights Harding. "Make sure [children] don't watch anything overly exciting before bed, and if screen time is used then sleep conscious content is best." "BeddyByes has a narrative that's calm, soothing and communicating, all the way as the melatonin builds up so that sleep is inevitable," notes Harding. "It's all very symbolic and scientifically based as well, and is sort of saying, here you go parents, here's some really good ideas for a bedtime routine." 3. Read to your children before bed "There are wonderful, magical things that happen in the brain before children go to bed, and it's as though those rich words that come through bedtime reading seep into the brain. "At about two to three years of age, when they're going to sleep, many children rehearse some of the language they've heard or something they've heard in the story. It's fascinating to hear, and it's like they're rehearsing what they've learned during the day for the next day." 4. Create a sleep-friendly environment "A cool, quiet and dark room helps little bodies wind down," says Harding. "A nightlight is fine if needed, but keep it dim. Soft music can soothe and create a sense of safety." 5. Offer melatonin-rich foods "Certain foods help the body naturally produce melatonin," says Harding. "Consider giving your child a small serving of foods such as tart cherries, bananas, oats, sweetcorn, or warm milk at dinnertime. These can support their natural sleep rhythm gently and deliciously." 6. Make time for outdoor play "Exposure to natural daylight and plenty of physical activity during the day helps regulate sleep-wake cycles," explains Harding. "Sunshine and movement are nature's gifts to growing bodies and sleeping brains – this helps set the body's internal clock. "Physical activity during the day also uses energy in the best way – setting the scene for a restful night." 7. Talk through the day's events "In BeddyByes, Gramma Leeba, who is the reassuring voice all the way through (voiced by Dawn French), reflects back to them their day," says Harding. "Little brains can be busy processing emotional moments, so a gentle chat about the day's highs and lows can help a child feel secure and 'tidy up' their thoughts before drifting off." 8. Comfort and reassurance "Preschoolers may experience night fears or separation anxiety," recognises Harding. "Reassure them with a calm voice and presence. A favourite soft toy or a special blanket can provide extra comfort. This emotional bonding makes children more likely to cooperate and feel settled." 9. Avoid over-scheduling "Busy days filled with activities can overstimulate young children – downtime helps regulate energy and emotions, making bedtime smoother," says Harding. "Allow for slow, quiet moments in the day, particularly before bedtime. Downtime helps the nervous system unwind." 10. Model calm and stillness "Children are excellent emotional barometers," says Harding. "If bedtime becomes rushed or fraught, their bodies pick up on that. Your calm, present energy becomes the template for their own winding down."
