City to conduct door-to-door campaign against vector-borne diseases
Varanasi: A special communicable disease control campaign will be conducted from July 1-31 under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme to prevent vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya, filariasis and kala-azar. A district-level interdepartmental task force meeting was held on Wednesday at the Collectorate auditorium, to discuss the preparations for the campaign. The meeting was chaired by district magistrate Satyendra Kumar and attended by chief development officer Himanshu Nagpal. The DM gathered a detailed information from the health department and all 13 supporting departments regarding the campaign preparations and instructed them to prepare a micro-plan as soon as possible. He emphasised that any negligence by any department official will not be tolerated. The work should be executed 100% according to the micro-plan. In the communicable disease control campaign conducted in April, the city CDPO received a stern warning for the unsatisfactory work by Anganwadi workers in the urban area. All departments should focus on data feeding and monitoring. The DM instructed that there should be no waterlogging or unsanitary conditions in either urban or rural areas of the district. The municipal corporation should take immediate action in case of water accumulation or blocked drains in the city. In rural areas, the panchayati raj and rural development departments should act promptly. Anti-larvae spraying and fogging should be conducted in hotspot areas, densely populated areas, and other slum areas. He said that the communicable disease control and awareness campaign can only be successful through the coordination of all departments. Frontline workers from various departments will visit homes to provide information on the prevention of vector-borne and infectious diseases and motivate people to change their behaviour. They should inform as many people as possible about mosquito-borne diseases and how to prevent them. ASHA and Anganwadi workers should work according to the micro-plan. All departments should ensure that the micro-plan is submitted within three days to ensure the successful execution of the campaign. The food department was instructed to regularly check the quality of food items at restaurants, sweet shops, and street food vendors in the district to prevent food poisoning. The education department should organise awareness activities in all schools and educational institutions. The urban development, rural development, and panchayati raj departments should continuously carry out all necessary activities to reduce mosquito density. Sensitisation and training should be provided to all village heads, secretaries and panchayat assistants. All officers and staff should be present at all block-level meetings and training sessions. ASHA and anganwadi workers should focus on counselling during the awareness campaign. Dengue and other patients should be provided immediate treatment at the CHC and PHC levels. Chief medical officer Dr Sandeep Chaudhary said that preparations for the successful execution of the campaign began. All departments were informed about the instructions received from the govt. All reports will be fed into the e-Kavach portal, and regular review and monitoring will be conducted. The CMO also informed about the 'Stop Diarrhea Control Campaign', which will run for two months alongside the communicable disease control month campaign.

CDPO, clerk arrested for taking bribe from tribal woman
1 2 Koraput: Vigilance sleuths on Monday arrested Sushila Sabar, child development project officer (CDPO), Bissamkatak in Rayagada district, and Rama Chandra Patra, clerk-cum-accountant, while they were allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 80,000 from a Dongria Kandha woman, a PVTG, to issue an appointment letter as an anganwadi worker to her. According to a vigilance release, the tribal woman applied for anganwadi worker post in her village about a month ago. On June 20, 2025, when she visited the office of the CDPO at Bisamcuttack to enquire about the status of her appointment, a bribe demand of Rs 1 lakh was allegedly made for issuance of the appointment letter. "On the same day, the accused clerk-cum-accountant Rama Chandra Patra allegedly collected Rs 20,000 from the complainant via UPI as the first instalment, purportedly on behalf of the CDPO. The complainant was asked to pay the remaining Rs 80,000 by June 23 to complete the process," it stated. "A vigilance team laid a trap and caught both the CDPO and the accountant red-handed at Kumbhara Dhamuni Chowk on Monday while accepting the second instalment of Rs 80,000. "In this connection, a case has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. The investigation is currently underway," it reads. In 2014, Patra was caught by vigilance for misappropriation of govt funds by using forged documents during his tenure as nazir at the office of tehsildar, Rayagada. That case is currently sub-judice before the court of special judge, vigilance.

Against All Odds: Minor girl sidesteps marriage trap set by kin, breaks free
Chitradurga: A teenage student from Challakere taluk, Chitradurga, successfully resisted a forced marriage attempt on June 3. The ninth-standard student faced significant pressure from family members during her father's absence, as they intended to marry her off to her mother's brother against her will. She firmly rejected the arrangement, upon discovering their plan. Authorities at Challakere police station filed charges against five individuals, including her mother, grandmother, uncle, mother's brother who tried to tie the Mangala Sutra, and another relative under sections 189(2), 54, 115(2), 352, 62, 190 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, sections 9, 10, 11 of The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and 75 JJ act, following a complaint from the CDPO office Challakere. The young girl now resides at Bala Mandira in Chitradurga. The village showed no signs of wedding celebrations, with no traditional attire or feast preparations. However, the intended groom attempted to tie the Mangalasutra despite the girl's opposition. A video showing her resistance to the forced marriage circulated on social media platforms. I do not want this. Save me." Her family ignored her protests and tried to proceed with the ceremony forcefully. She managed to escape despite being held by multiple relatives, with the incident being captured on video. The groom followed her with the mangalsutra, while her mother and relatives restrained her during her father's absence at work. Her mother struck her severely, joined by other relatives in the assault. They also attacked intervening neighbours while attempting to force the groom to place the chain around her neck as she lay down. The entire incident was recorded. Despite being firmly held, the girl continued resisting, shouting, "Help me! I can't breathe. Save me." The relatives persisted in their attempt to complete the ceremony. After a 30-minute struggle, she freed herself from the forced marriage attempt. Some villagers recorded the incident and informed Challakere police, who arrived that evening to rescue her and relocate her to a children's home. "She was focused on her studies and sports activities and didn't want to get married so soon. Her mother secretly planned the marriage. She fought against it alone. Meanwhile, the victim's father opposed her marriage, but relatives attempted it in his absence. Child marriage stopped in Kendrapada
Kendrapada: Local authorities prevented the marriage of a 16-year-old dalit girl to a 23-year-old youth at Deolapada village in Mahakalapada block on Thursday evening. Acting on a tip-off from locals, officials from the child development project office (CDPO) and child protection office (CPO), along with police, intervened at the wedding venue. The bride, daughter of a daily-wage labourer, was found to be underage after document verification. "We arrived at the scene while wedding preparations were underway and stopped the marriage despite strong protests from both families. The father had agreed to the marriage due to acute poverty," said Kabita Mallick, child protection officer, Mahakalapada block. The parents of the minor girl provided a written undertaking not to proceed with the marriage until their daughter turns 18. Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, marriages involving boys under 21 and girls under 18 are punishable with two years of rigorous imprisonment and/or a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Social worker Naliniprava Tarei condemned the practice, stating, "Child marriage is an appalling practice that robs children of their childhood and binds them to responsibility when they should be in school and enjoying their youth."

Pul visits Tezu, pledges to preserve local history and tribal cultures

The minister made the remark during a visit to the district museum, under-construction community convention centre and the child development project officer's residential quarters in Tezu in Lohit district. Visiting the museum, Pul said through such institutions, "cultural preservation must go hand-in-hand with community development". "Our museums are a reflection of our identity and heritage," she said while praising the district research officer and his team for their dedication. She assured the officials of her full support to ensure the "museum is strengthened and developed in a manner that preserves the legacy of our region". Earlier, district research officer J Rondo emphasised on the existing challenges and development needs of the museum. The minister later visited the under-construction residential quarter for the child development project officer (CDPO), which is being built to provide accommodation to officers working under the Integrated Child Development Services scheme.
