Algeria call up Mahious, Meziane in star-studded provisional squad for CHAN

Algeria's home-based national team coach, Madjid Bougherra, has named a provisional 28-man squad as preparations begin in earnest for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN). The selected players—drawn exclusively from the domestic league—are set to report to the National Technical Centre in Sidi Moussa on Sunday, 20 July, for a pivotal training camp that will shape the final squad for the tournament in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The squad is headlined by CHAN 2022 top scorer Aymen Mahious and features a strong representation from Algerian league champions MC Alger and runners-up CR Belouizdad, with six players each. USM Alger follows with four call-ups, while JS Kabylie and CS Constantine contribute three players apiece. The rest of the squad is rounded out by representatives from ASO Chlef, ES Sétif, and Paradou AC. This preliminary list is expected to undergo minor adjustments based on player performances during the camp and upcoming friendly matches. Algeria will be based in Group C at CHAN 2024, one of the most competitive groups, facing off against Uganda, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger. 2025 ⁦#LesVerts⁩ | ⁦#123VivaLAlgérie⁩🇩🇿 — Équipe d'Algérie de football (@LesVerts) July 19, 2025 As part of their build-up, the Desert Foxes A' will play two high-profile friendlies —offering a final opportunity for players to stake their claim before the continental showdown begins on August 2. Bougherra, who guided Algeria to the final of CHAN 2022 before losing on penalties to Senegal, is determined to go one better this time. With tactical preparations set to intensify, competition for places in the final squad promises to be fierce. But for now, this group of 28 forms the backbone of Algeria's quest for CHAN glory. Burkina Faso begin CHAN training camp in Morocco with two friendlies against hosts

Published: Saturday, 19 July 2025 Burkina Faso's A' national team have ramped up preparations for their CHAN 2024 campaign with a high-stakes training camp in Morocco, which includes two scheduled friendlies against the Moroccan A' team—starting with a crucial test on Saturday, 19 July at 17:00 GMT. The Stallions A', originally due to hold their pre-tournament camp in Cameroon, made a late strategic switch to Morocco to take advantage of world-class facilities at the Mohamed VI Sports Complex and superior logistical arrangements. The shift signals a bold intent from head coach Issa Balboné and the Burkinabe Football Federation as the team chases continental glory at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship. Friday's session saw the squad train on the pristine turf of the Moroccan facility, with Balboné placing heavy emphasis on tactical drills, building cohesion and refining the team's collective rhythm. The friendly matches against Morocco's home-based national side are expected to serve as pivotal tune-ups. With two weeks until their opening Group B clash against hosts Tanzania on 2 August in Dar es Salaam, Balboné views these fixtures as the final proving ground for his players. Group B is shaping up as one of the most unpredictable of CHAN 2024. Alongside Tanzania, Burkina Faso will face CHAN veterans Madagascar, rising West African contenders Mauritania, and debutants Central African Republic. The 25-man squad selected for the tournament combines experience with raw domestic talent, carefully drawn from the top-performing clubs in the Burkinabe Premier League. Each position has been reinforced to ensure tactical flexibility and resilience across the month-long tournament. For Balboné, who is overseeing Burkina Faso's debut campaign at CHAN, the Morocco camp offers more than training sessions—it's a final opportunity to instil belief, sharpen combinations and forge a competitive identity ahead of the continental showpiece. The team is expected to conclude their Moroccan camp just days before departing for Dar es Salaam, where their tournament kicks off on 2 August at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Serhou Guirassy's surprise visit fires up CHAN-bound Guinea

Guinea international star Serhou Guirassy has boosted the morale of the Syli Local squad with a passionate visit to their training base in Kindia, just days before the team departed for Morocco to continue preparations for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. The Borussia Dortmund striker, fresh off a spectacular season in which he scored 44 goals, made the stop as part of a broader humanitarian mission in his native country to launch his charity initiative. However, football was clearly at the heart of his agenda as he spent time encouraging the CHAN-bound squad. Guirassy, who also played a starring role for Dortmund during the recent Club World Cup in the United States, urged the locally-based players to seize the opportunity that CHAN offers and give their all to represent the nation proudly on the continental stage. 'Stay focused and give everything on the pitch,' Guirassy told the players. 'This is a huge chance to show what Guinea is made of. Fight with pride and make the nation proud.' The visit was warmly received by the Guinean Football Federation (FGF), with Mr. Mamadou Barry, FGF Vice-President, leading a delegation that welcomed Guirassy and his team. Also present were Mohamed Lamine Nabé and Hassimiou Barry, both members of the Executive Committee, who expressed their appreciation for the striker's show of solidarity. "On behalf of the Executive Committee, we thank Serhou Guirassy for this symbolic visit,' said Ibrahima Blasco Barry. 'It's a powerful gesture that means a lot to the players and the federation.' The Syli Local team, led by head coach Souleymane Camara, departed for Morocco shortly after the visit, where they will hold a six-day training camp from 13 to 19 July at the next phase of their CHAN preparations. The camp will focus on tactical refinements and cohesion before the team travels to Douala, Cameroon, for a mini-tournament. While in Cameroon, Guinea will face two fellow CHAN participants—Burkina Faso on 24 July and the Central African Republic on 28 July—in matches designed to simulate the high-pressure environment of the tournament. Both games will be played behind closed doors. Guinea have been drawn into a tough Group C featuring Algeria, Uganda, South Africa, and Niger, making every preparatory detail vital. Having reached the semi-finals in 2016 and 2020, Camara's side is aiming for a historic breakthrough at CHAN 2024, which kicks off 2 August and runs until 30 August, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Guirassy's visit is expected to leave a lasting impact on the squad, many of whom look up to the Bundesliga star as a symbol of what is possible through hard work, focus, and love for country.

Odong's championship mindset lifts Uganda in CHAN 2024 build-up

Fresh from helping SC Villa clinch the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title, defender Arnold Odong is now channeling that same intensity into Uganda's preparations for the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. Odong, who played a pivotal role for SC Villa last season with 24 appearances, believes the high-intensity training camp underway at the FUFA Technical Centre in Kisasi is sharpening the Cranes for what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament. The camp is part of the team's final build-up to the continental event, which is reserved for players plying their trade in their home countries. 'The first week of camp has not been easy,' Odong admitted. 'The intensity has increased, training has become tougher, but it's good for us. We appreciate it because it's going to help us perform better as a team in the coming games. Our coaches believe a lot in hard work, and that's exactly what it takes to compete.' Under the watchful eye of co-coaches Morley Byekwaso and Fred Muhumuza, Uganda's locally-based stars have embraced the demands of the residential camp, blending tactical drills with physical conditioning. Odong says the camp is also creating vital chemistry in the squad. 'First of all, it's a very good thing as a team to enter camp because it has brought us all together,' he explained. 'The players are working together, bonding, getting to know each other more. We're able to train collectively and the coaches can monitor what each and every player is doing. It's really helping us grow as a team.' The 24-year-old defender brings more than domestic pedigree to the squad. Odong featured for Uganda during their 2023 AFCON qualification campaign and friendlies against continental heavyweights such as Cameroon and Gambia—experiences he believes have equipped him with insights that are now benefiting the CHAN squad. 'Moving with the team during AFCON qualification gave me a lot of experience,' he said. 'I got to play with top players, learned from them, and understood how the national team operates. That same style of play is now being used for CHAN, so I come in with a bit of insight I can share with the squad to help us work better together.' Placed in a tricky Group C alongside Algeria, South Africa, Guinea and Niger, Uganda will need every ounce of grit, unity, and tactical clarity to progress. 'We're home and we need to give it our all,' Odong added. 'We need to work really hard to get out of the group and go far in the tournament.' With Odong's blend of leadership, league-winning experience and international exposure, the Cranes may well have the defensive backbone needed to make a strong CHAN 2024 run.
