Restaurant review: CHAR x Around The Block
Located inside Nad Al Sheba Mall, this unique grill-focused café offers smoke-licked meats, inventive cold plates, and exclusive non-alcoholic drinks like the Coal Cola and Yuzu Kick. From morning coffee to a low-lit grill bar by night, CHAR delivers a thoughtful, flavour-packed experience that's refreshingly different. The Spot Located inside Nad Al Sheba Mall, CHAR is the latest flame-fired concept from the team behind Around The Block, a homegrown Emirati café brand known for switching things up with every new venture. It's the laid-back coffee haunt you know and love; the grill is lit, the lights are dimmed, and CHAR takes over. Expect bold, char-driven flavours, smoke-licked meats, and cold plates that strike a balance between rich and refreshing. The Vibe This isn't a high-speed, high-energy kind of place. Instead, CHAR leans into a more relaxed rhythm. It's rather casual, with open flames visible from your seat and a soundtrack that keeps things mellow. The setting evolves throughout the day from a morning coffee shop to low-lit grill bar and the transformation works. The Food and Drinks The food is where CHAR hits its stride. The chicken shawarma, assembled live in front of you, is a standout. Rich, juicy, and wrapped with house pickles for that ideal balance of punch and tang. The wagyu tenderloin comes bathed in a zaatar truffle butter that elevates it to indulgent perfection. And the Moroccan bread, pillowy and heavy on parmesan, makes for an excellent starter (if you're into cheese). Don't miss the street corn, which brings a good amount of kick and umami thanks to generous parmesan and spice. To drink? The Coal Cola is CHAR's take on a cleaner, fresher cola, and the Yuzu Kick feels like ginger ale's sharper, cooler cousin. Both are non-alcoholic and exclusive to the venue. Refreshing, surprising, and worth ordering twice, the coffee is a must try, too. The Service The team is friendly but very laid-back, so don't expect fine-dining polish. The staff move at a relaxed pace, and their casual approach sets the tone across the space and suits a mellow evening. Something to note: the kitchen closes for an hour around 5pm to prep for dinner service, so time your visit accordingly. Roll out the red carpet for we have a new chip on the block. CHAR is the latest venture by homegrown, Emirati-owned concept Around The Block, known and loved for its high-quality, handcrafted specialty coffee and a new avatar with every opening. The latest transformation is all about flames and fire-fuelled flavours, drawing inspiration from global classics and pairing it with a Dubai story. Located in the brand new Nad Al Sheba Mall, the space offers, a sleek, minimal experience, stripped down to bare brown tiles, smooth wooden furniture, low yellow lighting and the centre of all the action – the exposed grill, firing up your dishes for you. The grilled varieties come from all parts of the world, incorporating Asian and Middle Eastern influences – perhaps the hotbeds of open-flame cooking. Think chicken shawarma, chicken tikka, tenderloin, sea bass and more, all flame-kissed and served with a variety of cold plates and sides designed to complement the depth of smoke and char with bright, light flavours. Everything is bold, refreshing, rich and packs an indulgent punch. What's new? The space functions in a unique way – by day it is the Around The Block we all know and love, serving specialty coffees, comfort dining and that light, daytime atmosphere. After 2pm is when the heat and speed picks up, and CHAR is brought to life. You start with freshly-baked bread, finish with smoky, specialty non-alcoholic drinks, savoury tender meats and a fitting end – something sweet. It's the perfect day-to-night transformation, much like ATB's other concepts – The Kitchen by Around The Block in Wasl 51, and TŌRI at Al Khawaneej Walk, turning into a modern Japanese eatery in a Cinderella-esque fashion. The BMI Group to partner with and invest in CHAR Technologies
The BMI Group, a leading real estate and business developer, will invest C$2 million into CHAR Technologies (TSXV:YES), a sustainable energy solutions provider, through a non-brokered private placement The companies will collaborate on expediting biocarbon production at CHAR's Thorold facility in Ontario CHAR Technologies processes waste from wood, agriculture and other organic sources into renewable natural gas, green hydrogen and a carbon-neutral biocarbon that replaces metallurgical steel-making coal CHAR Technologies stock has given back 39.19 per cent year-over-year but remains up by 125 per cent since 2020 The BMI Group, a leading real estate and business developer, will invest C$2 million into CHAR Technologies (TSXV:YES), a sustainable energy solutions provider, through a non-brokered private placement. The investment coincides with a binding letter of intent between the companies to accelerate commercial biocarbon production at CHAR's Thorold facility in Ontario, which is expected to be built by Q4 2025. As per the agreement, BMI Group will also acquire project-level ownership in the Thorold facility and will be granted the right to nominate a director to CHAR's board. The BMI Group is the largest owner and redeveloper of end-of-use paper mills in Ontario, including the Bioveld Niagara Multimodal Hub, where the Thorold facility is located, as well as Bioveld North in Espanola in the province's wood fibre basket, where the companies will co-develop a new renewable energy facility. According to Friday's news release, the financing is expected to close by May 9, 2025. 'We see significant long-term opportunity in our partnership with CHAR Technologies, as The BMI Group continues to invest in the strategic retooling of industrial sites across Canada.' 'This partnership marks a pivotal milestone in advancing biocarbon production at our CHAR Tech Thorold facility,' added Andrew White, CEO of CHAR Technologies. 'With The BMI Group's infrastructure expertise, we are positioned to accelerate project delivery and generate strong returns for our investors. This collaboration also opens the door to further opportunities already in development—most notably, the tremendous potential we see in Espanola.'
