Barabanki stampede: Yogi Adityanath announces ex gratia of ₹5 lakh for victims' families, orders swift relief efforts
Following Barabanki stampede, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an ex gratia of five lakh for the families of deceased. Panic and chaos erupted after a live wire broken by monkeys fell onto a tin shed leading to electrocution at 2:00 am on July 28. The CM's Office issued a statement on X of behalf of Yogi Adityanath stating that the CM expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the unfortunate accident in Barabanki's temple. The post in Hindi states, "Chief Minister Shri @myogiadityanath Ji Maharaj has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in an unfortunate accident at the Shri Avsaneshwar Mahadev Temple premises in Barabanki district and extended his condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased." Revealing that the UP CM directed the district administration officials to ensure timely delivery of relief operation and expedite the proper treatment of the injured, the post added, 'Maharaj Ji has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations. Maharaj Ji has prayed to Lord Mahadev, the Supreme Deity, to grant salvation to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to the injured.' Two people died and over 30 were injured due to electrocution from a fallen wire at a temple in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki early on Monday morning. On the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan devotees had lined up for darshan when the incident happened at the Awsaneshwar Mahadev temple at 2:30 am. Those injured people were taken to the Community Health Centre in Haidergarh and Trivediganj. "The incident happened in the Awsaneshwar temple at around 2-2.30 am. Some people came in contact with electric wires, which caused panic. A total of 29 people were brought to the Community Health Centre in Haidergarh. One of them was referred to the district hospital. His condition is out of danger. Nine people were taken to the community health centre Trivediganj, out of which two were brought dead and the remaining seven are out of danger," Chief Medical Officer Awadhesh Prasad said. "There were six more injured, who were taken to the community health centre... All have been discharged," he added. District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya reached the temple premises along with senior officers. DM Tripathi said, "Devotees came to Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple to offer prayers on Monday of the 'saavan' month. The electric wire broke and fell on the shed. Around 19 people were injured by electric shocks. The injured were taken to Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centre. Two people are in a critical situation and have been referred to the District law and order situation is normal here." Some monkeys jumped onto the overhead electric wires, causing them to fall onto the tin shed. Some of those injured were taken to the Trivediganj Community Health Centre, while a few others were referred to a higher medical facility due to their critical condition. On Sunday, a stampede took place at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, claiming the lives of eight people and leaving 30 others injured. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, when a large crowd of devotees was climbing nearly 800 steps to reach the hilltop shrine, according to officials. Upon receiving the information, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the fire brigade arrived at the scene and initiated rescue operations.

Delhi Metro launches drive against wall vandalism, CM backs it
In a move to tackle incidents of wall vandalism, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched a special drive against those who deface metro walls and structures with posters, banners, and graffiti. As part of the drive, DMRC has removed posters and banners from 327 sites across its network. Following Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's directions, DMRC has filed FIRs against a total of 53 persons and agencies under the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007 In a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office, Gupta said, 'The Delhi Metro is the pride of our Capital. It is everyone's responsibility to keep it clean and beautiful.' Taking a stand against wall defacement, Gupta said, the campaign would continue with full force, and all government departments have been directed to act in coordination, with joint accountability established. Under enforcement measures, a special monitoring team has been formed to keep watch on metro structures. The CM's Office said the government is also holding departments like PWD, MCD, and NDMC jointly accountable to prevent blame-games. 'Every department and officer will now be held accountable,' Gupta said. 'We want Delhi Metro to be more than just a means of transport—we want it to be a place where people can experience beauty and cleanliness.' She also appealed to the public to support the campaign and avoid damaging metro property. 'Delhi belongs to all of us. Keeping it clean and beautiful is our shared responsibility,' Gupta said

Actor-politician G Krishnakumar and family face kidnapping and extortion allegations
Thiruvananthapuram police have registered a kidnapping and extortion case against actor-cum-politician G Krishnakumar and his family. A female staff of Krishnakumar's daughter Diya's firm filed a complaint, alleging that the actor and Diya kidnapped her and extorted money, police confirmed on Saturday. Simultaneously, the police registered an embezzlement case against the female staff. Krishnakumar and Diya filed this complaint, accusing the employee of financial misconduct. "We have registered both cases," stated an officer from the Museum police station, where authorities filed the First Information Reports (FIRs). "We are currently reviewing all evidence submitted with the complaints. Further action will follow this review." Meanwhile, Krishnakumar told a television channel that three female employees embezzled approximately 69 lakh from the firm while his pregnant daughter, Diya, could not look after the business. The actor also claimed that after they discovered the embezzlement and threatened law enforcement action, the women met with them, alongside their husbands, and confessed to the crime. "They initially paid about 8 lakh and promised to return the remaining money, asking us not to file a complaint," Krishnakumar asserted. "However, one of them later called and threatened my daughter, prompting us to file a police complaint on May 30 or 31." He further claimed the employee's complaint against his family was a counter-complaint, filed just one day after their own. "Now I have learnt that police have registered a case under non-bailable provisions against all six members of my family, including my son-in-law," he stated. Krishnakumar also confirmed sending an electronic mail to the CM's Office that explains the situation, to which he received a response. He claims to possess electronic evidence of the staff committing the said crime and subsequently admitting their guilt. "We have provided all this evidence to the police," he concluded.

Mamata to visit Delhi next Monday, may meet PM Modi
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to visit New Delhi on June 9 and may meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She is likely to return on June 11. Sources at Nabanna, the state secretariat, said that the CM's Office has sought an appointment from the PMO for a meeting on June 10. 'The chief minister wants to raise the issue of the Centre's pending funds and dues to the West Bengal government, which has now ballooned to over Rs 2 lakh 27 thousand crore,' an official said. The TMC government in the state has been raising the issue of pending Central funds for schemes like MGNREGA (rural job guarantee scheme) and PM Awas Yojana (housing scheme for the poor), and has even knocked the doors of the Supreme Court. The BJP government at the Centre has justified the blocking of the funds, citing alleged corruption in the implementation of the schemes in the state. Last week, Banerjee had skipped the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in Delhi that was chaired by the PM. Sources close to Mamata said she decided not to attend the previous meeting because the NDA-led states were allotted more than 15 minutes to speak, while she was given only five minutes. During her visit, Banerjee will also inaugurate her party's new office in Delhi. Meanwhile, Banerjee on Thursday visited SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for a follow-up of her leg injury that she had received while campaigning for the party in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections.
