Dramatic moment firefighting drones tackle huge skyscraper blaze as flames engulf 500ft building in heart-pounding drill

THIS is the shocking moment a fire rips through a skyscraper - as high-tech drones swoop in to battle the blaze. Multiple firefighting drones swarm the 500ft building in southeastern China during an intense fire drill. 4 4 4 The fire drill took place in a skyscraper in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, according to Xinhua News Agency. Dramatic footage from June 24 shows flames sweeping through multiple floors as thick smoke billows around the building. Red drones are seen blasting water or foam at the building with force. Each one appears to be targeting a different floor and spraying at a sharp horizontal angle. Made of carbon fiber, these drones can carry up to 770 pounds of foam or water, spraying it as far as 100 feet. They operate at altitudes over 656 feet and can run continuously thanks to a tethered power and fluid supply. It's unclear whether the building on fire was built specifically for safety drills, has been abandoned or is currently in use as an office or apartment block. But this is just one of several recent innovations coming out of China. It comes as China recently put out to sea the world's largest cargo ship. The 1,310-ft-long vessel is said to be capable of holding a whopping 220,000 tonnes of goods and stacking 24,000 containers. A massive fire has broken out in a skyscraper in Dubai Footage shows the monstrous vessel - built in just 17 months - ripping through the ocean. Named the CMA CGM SEINE, the vessel was delivered from its Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai in April. The ship has a fuel bunker with a capacity of 18,600 cubic metres of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), allowing it to travel nearly 20,000 nautical miles when fully loaded. While dubbed the "sea monster", this ship is actually more environmentally friendly than traditional oil-powered vessels. It emits 20 percent less carbon dioxide, 85 percent fewer nitrogen oxides and 99 percent less particulate matter and sulphur oxides. China's goal in building these giants vessels is reportedly to reduce logistic costs, make global shipping greener and increase its connectivity to other parts of the world. 4

Saudi Arabia adds MEDEX service to Jeddah Port, linking 12 global hubs

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has expanded its maritime connectivity with the addition of the MEDEX shipping service at Jeddah Islamic Port, linking the Kingdom to 12 regional and international ports. Operated by global logistics firm CMA CGM, the new service connects Jeddah to Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali in the UAE, Karachi in Pakistan, and Colombo in Sri Lanka, according to a release by the Saudi Ports Authority, or Mawani. The move is part of Mawani's broader efforts to improve operational efficiency at Jeddah Islamic Port and raise Saudi Arabia's standing in global port performance rankings. It also supports the Kingdom's National Logistics Strategy, which aims to increase the sector's contribution to gross domestic product from 6 percent to 10 percent by 2030, positioning Saudi Arabia as a strategic logistics hub connecting three continents. In the official announcement, Mawani stated: 'This service enhances the port's competitive advantage, facilitates global trade, opens new business horizons, and supports national exports.' The MEDEX service is the 19th shipping line added to Jeddah Islamic Port since the beginning of 2025, reinforcing Saudi Arabia's commitment to improving regional and international connectivity. With a capacity of up to 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, the new service also links Jeddah to Mundra and Nhava Sheva in India, Piraeus in Greece, Malta, Genoa in Italy, Fos in France, and Barcelona and Valencia in Spain. Headquartered in Marseille, CMA CGM Group operates in 177 countries and is the world's third-largest shipping company. It serves more than 420 ports across five continents with a fleet of over 650 vessels. The new service aims to boost domestic import and export activity, supporting Saudi Arabia's broader objective of establishing itself as a global trade hub. Jeddah Islamic Port currently features 62 multi-purpose berths, a bonded and re-export logistics area, several specialized terminals, and advanced cargo-handling equipment. It also houses two general cargo terminals, two ship repair docks, and a dedicated marine services zone. The port's total handling capacity reaches 130 million tons annually. Saudi Arabia climbed to 15th place globally in container throughput rankings in 2024, underlining its growing role as a maritime logistics powerhouse, according to Lloyd's List, a UK-based shipping industry journal. The report highlighted that Jeddah Islamic Port advanced to 32nd place globally, up from 41st in 2023, after handling 5.58 million containers last year — a 12.6 percent increase over the previous year.

New scanners, tougher controls: Lebanon fights smuggling to win IMF backing

Report by Lara El Hachem, English adaptation by Karine Keuchkerian Because global companies avoid ports with high risks, tightening control over smuggling at Lebanon's official border crossings has become essential. In this context, the Beirut Port Authority, under the direct guidance of the Lebanese government, is moving forward with a previously signed contract with CMA CGM to operate the container terminal at the Port of Beirut. The company will also be responsible for installing and maintaining scanners, training staff, and upgrading the system. The scanners to be installed are modern and advanced, with the capacity to inspect 100 containers per minute. However, the inspection process and data entry will remain under the sole authority of Lebanese Customs, as it is a security responsibility. Oversight of the inspection process will also be implemented through an integrated and transparent system. The scanners are expected to be operational within four to six weeks, and the same model will be deployed at the Port of Tripoli, as well as at the Masnaa and Aboudieh crossings. This comes alongside continued security tightening at illegal border points. Curbing customs evasion is one of the key reforms demanded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which emphasized in its closing meeting with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam the need to combat money laundering and reform the banking system. These efforts aim to reduce reliance on a cash-based economy and encourage deposits to return to the banking sector. Salam outlined the challenges posed by public debt, the banking crisis, the refugee situation, and the need for reconstruction, all of which are exacerbated by limited international support. Regarding Lebanon's commitment to reforming its laws—particularly the bank restructuring law—the IMF emphasized the importance of aligning with global standards during the law's approval process. However, the IMF would have preferred a faster pace, especially to determine the fate of depositors' funds. The IMF delegation will leave Beirut with plans to return in early September. The Lebanese delegation, meanwhile, is preparing for the IMF's annual meetings in October with senior officials to review the steps Lebanon has taken. As part of continued cooperation with the IMF, a Lebanese ministerial delegation will travel to Cairo to sign memorandums of understanding with Egypt to benefit from its expertise in technology and development.
