CM Fadnavis on why MNS workers were stopped from ‘Marathi pride' march: ‘Police had specific inputs that…'
After workers of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were detained in large numbers while protesting in Thane on Tuesday, Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said that 'nobody was denied permission for a march, but the marchers were insistent on a particular route'. CM Devendra Fadnavis cited "possible law and order issues". (X/@CMOMaharashtra/File) This route, he said, could not have been granted as it could have led to 'law and order issues'. The MNS wanted to hold a counter-protest after a march by traders over MNS men thrashing a shop owner for refusing to speak Marathi last week. The 'speak-Marathi-or-else' threats and violence has escalated in recent weeks as the MNS claims the BJP-led state government wants to impose Hindi in the state. After MNS workers did not agree to police's decision on the route for their march, prohibitory orders were issued against the assembly of people. Scores of MNS men and women were detained. Also read: Marathi language row behind Thackeray reunion 'I have spoken to the police commissioner of Mira Bhayandar (area) and he said they had specific inputs about plans by some of the protesters conspiring to create trouble,' the CM said. He also addressed allegations of differential treatment as the traders were given permission for their protest march last week. 'They were given the permission because they adhered to the general route permitted by the police. The MNS workers asked for permission for a rally, too, at a specified location. Everybody knows how crowded the Mira Road railway station remains in the morning. Permitting to hold the protest around it was not possible,' Fadnavis added. (HT Photo) The police said MNS workers tried to take out a protest march 'despite no permission and when prohibitory orders banning assembly of more than five persons were in place'. From the MNS side, its Mumbai unit president Sandeep Deshpande said before the detentions began, 'The traders' march was organised at Mira Road and police wanted us to organise the march at Ghodbunder Road. This shows that they do not want to permit our march in Mira Road area. Now, all MNS workers across the state will reach Mira Road and, will not rest till cops allow us the protest march there.' Around 12 busloads of MNS workers were later detained.

"This Is Sickening": Actor Ranvir Shorey Slams MNS Workers Over 'Slapgate'
Mumbai: Actor Ranvir Shorey took to social media to strongly condemn the actions of MNS workers who allegedly assaulted a Gujarati shopkeeper for not speaking Marathi. Expressing his outrage, the actor called the incident shameful and unacceptable. He also tagged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in his post. The 'Ek Tha Tiger' actor took to his X handle to post a video that captured members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) allegedly attacking a restaurant owner in Mumbai's Mira Road area over his inability to speak Marathi. Expressing anger, Mr Shorey described the incident as "disturbing" and voiced concerns about the current state of law and order in Maharashtra. Tagging Mr Fadnavis and his office, the actor said, "This is sickening. Monsters on the loose, looking for attention and political relevance. Where's L&O [law and order]." This is sickening. Monsters on the loose, looking for attention and political relevance. Where's L&O, @CMOMaharashtra @Dev_Fadnavis? — Ranvir Shorey (@RanvirShorey) July 2, 2025 Ranvir Shorey also hit back at trolls in the comments section of his post. A X user asked him, "Since how many years you now live in Maharashtra? How much effort have you taken to learn Marathi?" In his reply, the actor said, "First, I'm not answerable to a hateful anonymous troll like you for any of these questions. Second, you're really dumb if you think beating people up will make them learn and speak a language. And finally, if you do want to bring attention to the issue, there are more positive & constructive ways to bring about change, or even protest for political mileage, instead of beating hapless citizens who're just trying to make a living!" A video that went viral on social media showed a group of men visiting a shop to buy food. The situation turned violent when they allegedly attacked the shop owner for not speaking in Marathi. The men were seen wearing scarves associated with Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The incident took place in Bhayander, located in Maharashtra's Thane district. It occurred shortly after the state government rolled back its decision to enforce a three-language policy, which had sparked criticism from the opposition.

Kumbh mela, Gadchiroli mining authorities to have overriding powers, bills tabled
Mumbai: The Mahayuti government on Monday tabled two ordinances for the formation of the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority and the Gadchiroli District Mining Authority in the state assembly. The ordinances, which grant sweeping powers to the two authorities, will be converted into separate legislations once they are approved by the legislative assembly and the legislative council. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis with deputy chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar (@CMOMaharashtra) A total of six ordinances were tabled in the assembly on Monday, the first day of the monsoon session of the state legislature. Ordinances require approval from both the houses of the legislature to be converted into separate laws. The state government had decided to enact a special law for the formation of the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority, which will oversee the Simhasta Kumbh Mela scheduled to commence in Nashik in October 2026. According to the bill tabled in the assembly on Monday, the authority will have the power to override all existing laws and no court will have jurisdiction to entertain any suit/ proceeding against any of its actions or orders. Section 12 of the bill grants the authority powers to levy fees and service charges within the Kumbh Mela area towards entry of persons, vehicles and goods and towards registration of any business, trade or profession. Section 17 gives the authority powers to punish those who are found obstructing or failing to comply with its directions, with a jail term of up to one year or a fine or both. 'No courts shall have the jurisdiction to entertain any suit or proceedings in respect of anything done, any action taken, orders made, directions or instructions issued by the authority, chairperson and Kumbh Mela commissioner, in pursuance of any powers conferred by or under this act,' section 20 of the bill says. 'The provisions of this act and orders issued or made thereunder shall have effect notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in any other law,' says section 21 of the bill. The Gadchiroli District Mining Authority (GDMA) constituted to develop the Maoist-affected Gadchiroli district as a new steel manufacturing hub, has been given similar legal immunity. According to the bill tabled in the assembly, the authority has the power to make rules and regulations which it deems necessary for exercising its powers and discharging its duties. 'No suit, prosecution or other legal proceeding shall lie against any member of the authority or the executive committee constituted under this ordinance for anything done or any action taken in good faith under this act,' the bill says. The bill gives immense powers to the GMDA for curbing any difficulties. '...the government may, as occasion arises, by order, published in the official gazette, do anything not inconsistent with the provisions of this Act, which appears to it to be necessary or expedient for the purpose of removing the difficulty,' the bill says.
