Gujarat govt sets up unified transport authority for A'bad, Surat

Gandhinagar: Gujarat govt has set up a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) to methodically develop the public transport system in Ahmedabad and Surat. The move comes in the wake of directives from the central govt to create specialized bodies for planned urban transport development. The state urban development department has established UMTA to unify transport-related efforts across the two metropolitan regions. The govt resolution (GR) establishing UMTA notes that urban transport systems are crucial to progressive development, daily functionality and economic growth. It highlights that the rapid expansion of cities and metropolitan areas has rendered urban planning more complex, making well-functioning transport systems essential for ongoing development. The GR states that the previous institutional framework lacked integration, creating a need for a unified mechanism. The National Urban Transport Policy, 2006, advocated for UMTA in cities with over a million residents to coordinate urban transport planning and management, addressing overlaps between multiple agencies. The state govt had been considering establishing UMTA for Ahmedabad and Surat to handle proposal formulation, strategy monitoring, policy oversight, regulatory functions, transport demand management and coordination of agencies' implementation works. The state-level UMTA has now been officially created, chaired by the chief secretary, and includes senior IAS and non-IAS officers as members. Govt sources said that UMTA's specified functions for Ahmedabad and Surat include advising the govt on urban transport matters, formulating and administering transport policies, strategies, standards and guidelines and overseeing the integration of multi-modal transport systems in city master plans. "The scope of work of UMTA will also include preparing comprehensive mobility plans (CMP), monitoring multi-year transport programmes, resolving conflicts or overriding submissions lacking integration and approving urban transport initiatives," said a source close to the development. Officials added that the authority has also been mandated to promote integrated transport systems, oversee operations of the Traffic Management and Information Control Centre (TMIC) and National Public Transport Helpline (NPTH). UMTA will also deploy or contract public transport services, recommending fees, fares and charges. The body will also enforce transport regulations and will create and manage an urban transport fund.

Union cabinet nod for phase-II of Pune metro, to cost ₹3,626 crore

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project comprising two elevated corridors that span 12.75 km and will be built at a cost of Rs 3,626 crore. The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the two corridors under Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project -- Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi -- as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor under Phase 1. "These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years," Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. In a post on X, Modi said Pune is developing in every sector and making a crucial contribution to the country's economy. To further speed up the growth, the government has approved the expansion of its Metro network, the prime minister said, adding it will boost the public transport and make people's lives easier. Vaishnaw said the estimated project cost is Rs 3,626.24 crore, which will be equally shared by the government of India, the government of Maharashtra and external bilateral/multilateral agencies. "This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which envisions a continuous Chandani Chowk to Wagholi Metro corridor to strengthen East-West mass transit in Pune," Vaishnaw said. The minister said these extensions will serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions and residential pockets, increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network. "The new corridors will also integrate at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court) to enable seamless multimodal urban travel," he said. Under long-term mobility planning, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will be integrated at Chandani Chowk, while those from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, allowing passengers easy access to Pune's Metro system. "These extensions will also help decongest arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast and eco-friendly mobility options," the minister said. After completion of these corridors, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line-2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047 and 3.49 lakh in 2057. The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will execute all civil, electro-mechanical and related works. Pre-construction activities such as topographical survey and detailed design consultancy have already commenced, the minister said. This strategic expansion is poised to unlock Pune's economic potential, enhance its urban transport infrastructure and contribute significantly to sustainable and inclusive development across the metropolitan region, Vaishnaw said.

Compass Minerals International, Inc. (CMP): A Bull Case Theory

We came across a bullish thesis on Compass Minerals International, Inc. on The Lion's Roar - Outside the Box Investments' Substack by Dominick D'Angelo. In this article, we will summarize the bull's thesis on CMP. Compass Minerals International, Inc.'s share was trading at $19.67 as of June 24th. CMP's forward P/E was 23.70 according to Yahoo Finance. Tim Roberts Photography/ Compass Minerals (CMP) presented a compelling opportunity after an ~85% share price collapse, which led to severely depressed sentiment and set the stage for a high-conviction turnaround bet. The team's deep research—highlighted by distributor interviews, FOIL requests, and competitor site checks—helped form a differentiated and bullish view. Estimates going into the quarter were well above consensus, and the company exceeded even those elevated expectations. Salt revenue came in at $433 million, up 39% year-over-year, driven by colder-than-average weather that boosted highway deicing and C&I demand. A $147 million inventory reduction helped generate ~$170 million in free cash flow, with further working capital benefits expected in Q3. EPS estimates were revised materially upward across 2025–2027 on better pricing and volumes. Despite elevated production costs in Q2, likely due to lower Goderich output, capacity utilization is nearing 100%, and depots are empty ahead of the winter season, implying a robust bidding cycle. Contracts locked in during the inventory glut of mid-2024 saw a 5.2% pricing decline, but with inventories now depleted and producers unable to meet demand, Compass is positioned to capture higher-margin emergency orders. Market checks show prices spiking as high as $82/ton in some counties versus the $71/ton average reported in Q2. As volumes normalize, Compass should see margin improvement and operating leverage kick in. Meanwhile, the plant business posted improved volumes and its first y/y price increase since Q2 2023, aided by cost-cutting at Utah. With valuable assets, falling leverage, and a favorable market backdrop, CMP remains deeply undervalued despite its recent rally. Previously, we covered a s on Compass Minerals International, Inc. (CMP) by Dominick D'Angelo in March 2025, which highlighted its salt dominance, cost cuts, and early winter tailwinds. The company's stock has appreciated ~105% since our coverage, as the thesis played out. Dominick D'Angelo shares a similar view but emphasizes deeper research and operational momentum in the latest thesis. Compass Minerals International, Inc. is not on our list of the 30 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. As per our database, 26 hedge fund portfolios held CMP at the end of the first quarter, which was 31 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the risk and potential of CMP as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk.
