UAE launches largest water supply project from Egypt to southern Gaza

The UAE has announced it will launch the largest water supply project from Egypt's Rafah border to the Gaza Strip, coming as part of its ''Operation Chivalrous Knight III' to provide urgent aid to Gaza, according to a press release. It is slated to provide up to 15 liters of desalinated water per person daily, benefiting up to 600,000 people in need within Gaza. The war on Gaza has destroyed up to 80 percent of its water infrastructure, according to the press release. The press release added that the campaign officially revealed, during a press conference held at the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU) headquarters in Deir al-Balah, that construction has begun on the 315 mm water transmission line spanning 6.7 kilometers. The media director for Operation Chivalrous Knight III in Gaza, Sharif al-Nayrab, said in a statement, 'This new water pipeline is more than a rapid response to the urgent thirst crisis in Gaza; it is a continuation of the UAE's unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian people, particularly in the face of the humanitarian disaster caused by war.' He added that the UAE has spearheaded numerous relief efforts for Gaza, including, 'building desalination stations and delivering water tankers to drilling wells and maintaining water networks'. The Deputy Director-General of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility for Technical Affairs, Omar Shatat, hailed the UAE's tireless humanitarian work since the war on Gaza broke out. A civil society representative in Gaza, Khalil Abu Shammala, also praised the UAE and its vital role in relief efforts, especially through 'Operation Chivalrous Knight III', according to the press release.

Gaza facing 'man-made drought' with water system on brink of collapse

Gaza 's population, already struggling to feed themselves because of Israeli restrictions on the entry of aid, now face the prospect of a 'man-made drought' unless Israel starts to allow fuel into the coastal strip. After more than 20 months of war, only 40 per cent of the Palestinian territory's production facilities for drinking water remain functional – 87 out of 217 – but only as long as limited fuel reserves last, according to UN children's agency Unicef. 'If the current more than 100-day blockade on fuel coming into Gaza does not end, children will begin to die of thirst,' Unicef spokesperson James Elder warned. Fuel has become essential to power services such as water supply and health care for more than two million Palestinians, after Israel cut electricity supply to Gaza following the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas that triggered the war. Mr Elder said that while there was rightful concern over the nutrition situation in Gaza, with Unicef reporting a 50 per cent increase in children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years being admitted for treatment of acute malnutrition from April to May, 'water cannot be sidelined'. 'Gaza is facing what would amount to a man-made drought. Water systems are collapsing,' he told a press briefing in Geneva. Gaza's Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU) said the lack of fuel and operating materials was threatening a complete breakdown in water and sanitation systems, with the functioning of desalination plants, pumping stations, and groundwater wells all affected. 'Access to clean and safe water has become a daily challenge that threatens public health and puts children's lives in direct danger,' the CMWU told The National. 'This collapse is not technical, it is the direct result of the blockade and denial of essential operational materials.' The utility called on the United Nations and international humanitarian organisations to act swiftly to prevent a health and environmental disaster. Besides pumps and generators, fuel is also needed for tankers to carry water to makeshift camps for Gazans displaced by the war. Assem Al Nabeeh, an engineer and spokesperson for Gaza city's municipality, detailed the scale of the infrastructure damage caused by Israel's war against Hamas. 'The occupation has destroyed more than 75 per cent of the city's central water wells, either entirely or partially,' Mr Al Nabeeh told the National. 'In Gaza city alone, we have over 110,000 metres of water pipelines damaged. The situation is far worse across the strip.' He said less than half of the city area currently receives any water supply. Even in the best circumstances in previous months, only half the city had access. Most residents haven't received water in months. International standards call for 100 to 120 litres of water per person per day but Gaza's residents receive far less, according to Mr Al Nabeeh. The result is outbreaks of gastrointestinal and skin diseases due to the lack of basic hygiene, he said. He said the lack of potable water was forcing some people to drink water from taps, which was only suitable for cleaning because of contamination and high salinity. 'This is not just a crisis of drinking water,' Mr Al Nabeeh said. 'It is a daily crisis of survival. Unless fuel, spare parts and maintenance equipment are allowed in, we will lose the entire system, and countless lives along with it.'

UAE launches 4th phase of water project in Gaza

''Operation Chivalrous Knight 3'' has launched the fourth phase of its water supply project for residents of the Gaza Strip, by supporting the maintenance of central wells across the municipalities of the Strip. The initiative is being carried out in cooperation with the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU), with the aim of enhancing the municipalities' capacity to deliver water to Palestinian citizens amid the escalating humanitarian crisis and ensuring the continuity of basic services. This phase includes the repair of approximately 28 non-operational wells across various governorates in Gaza, aiming to provide water access to around 700,000 people, thereby alleviating their harsh living conditions. Sharif Al Nayrab, Media Director of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 in Gaza, praised the efforts of UAE humanitarian organisations and charitable associations, which have consistently supported all sectors in Gaza. Key supporters of this project include the Sharjah Charity International, the Saqr Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Foundation, and Dar Al Ber Society. Mohammad Arbaei, Deputy Chairman of the Support Committee for Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 in Gaza, explained that this is the fourth water-related project, following three previous initiatives: the distribution of water tankers delivering water daily to thousands of citizens, the drilling of primitive "Nazzaz' wells along the southern coasts, and the drilling of submersible wells to improve water access for residents suffering daily. Omar Shatat, Deputy Director General for Technical Affairs at the CMWU in Gaza, stated that the humanitarian initiative has served as a key lifeline and emergency support effort to ease the suffering of Gaza's population. He highlighted that the fourth phase of the central well maintenance project is one of the operation's most impactful initiatives to date. Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 continues its humanitarian mission across all governorates of Gaza, aiming to alleviate the hardships faced by residents and facilitate their access to essential and life-sustaining services.
