Divya Deshmukh in action (Image via X/@FIDE_chesss) India's Divya Deshmukh pulled off a big surprise at the FIDE Women's World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, by defeating world No. 2 Zhu Jiner in the first game of their pre-quarterfinal match on Wednesday. The 18-year-old Indian, playing with the white pieces, showed great maturity and calmness against the Chinese star, who is the second seed and a strong title contender. Divya slowly built a strong position, stayed steady through the middlegame, and took advantage of Zhu's mistakes to earn a memorable win. With a 1-0 lead in the two-game match, Divya now needs just a draw in the second game to reach the quarterfinals. If she does, she will become only the second Indian woman to make it this far in the Women's World Cup, after Harika Dronavalli in 2023. Meanwhile, the other three Indian players in the pre-quarterfinals—R. Vaishali, Koneru Humpy, and Harika—played out draws in their first games. Vaishali, playing white, had a tight game against Kazakhstan's Meruert Kamalidenova, with both players cancelling each other out. Humpy and Harika, who are both former World Championship semifinalists, played safe and held their games with the black pieces. Humpy faced Switzerland's Alexandra Kosteniuk, while Harika played against Russia's Kateryna Lagno. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia melirik jet tempur J-10 milik China. Varanasi Flood Alert: Ganga water level surges after continuous rainfall; water levels rise in other districts of UP too
1 2 In a recent monsoon update, Varanasi has received a flood warning after the Ganga River waters touch the danger level. The alert comes after continuous rainfall across northern India, due to which the Ganga River swelled up rapidly. The flood alerts were raised in many districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi and Prayagraj. Reports suggest that the Ganga is all swelled up and flowing in full energy in Varanasi. The reports also mention that there are 84 ghats in Varanasi and all are completely submerged. Given the current situation, the authorities have opened 18 gates of the Matatila Dam in Lalitpur and 8 gates of the Govind Sagar Dam. A closer look: Varanasi Reports suggest that the low-lying regions in the city are flooding. All these areas are near the ghats and submerged. The recent flood-like situation has interrupted daily-life and religious practices at the temples and several riverside activities. According to the report by the Central Water Commission's middle Ganga shows that Varanasi experienced a 0.7m increase in water levels within 24 hours. Scientists discover world's largest waterfall — but It's completely invisible, here's why
For decades, the title of the world's tallest waterfall belonged to Venezuela's Angel Falls. But now, scientists are pointing to an even more colossal cascade — one that plunges a staggering 11,500 feet. The twist? It's completely invisible to the human eye. Located deep beneath the ocean's surface between Greenland and Iceland, the Denmark Strait cataract is the largest waterfall on Earth — and no one will ever witness it in person. This underwater marvel moves over 3.2 million cubic meters of water per second, far more than any river on land. Yet its existence remained unknown until scientists began studying ocean temperatures, salinity, and currents in this icy part of the Atlantic. What makes Denmark Strait the world's largest waterfall and why it's invisible The Denmark Strait cataract is an undersea waterfall formed where cold, dense water from the Nordic Sea meets warmer, lighter water from the Irminger Sea. This dramatic temperature and salinity difference causes the heavier water to plunge downward in a massive cascade beneath the ocean surface. First identified through thermal and salinity mapping, this phenomenon doesn't roar or mist like terrestrial waterfalls. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia melirik jet tempur J-10 milik China. Mengapa para pakar memperingatkan untuk hati-hati? CNA Indonesia Baca Undo Instead, it silently flows through the darkness, shaped by a submerged ridge left behind by glaciers during the Last Ice Age approximately 11,500 years ago. In sheer height and volume, it surpasses all known waterfalls. Niagara Falls measures about 181 feet, and Angel Falls 3,212 feet, but the Denmark Strait cataract plunges nearly four times deeper. Its hidden nature makes it one of the most fascinating and powerful forces in Earth's ocean systems. A hidden force that regulates Earth's climate Beyond its jaw-dropping size, the Denmark Strait cataract plays a critical role in maintaining global climate stability. As the cold Arctic water descends into the Atlantic, it powers the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a massive oceanic conveyor belt that distributes heat and nutrients across the world's oceans. This deep-sea flow moderates temperatures in Europe, sustains marine biodiversity, and drives large-scale weather patterns. But the system is fragile. Climate change and warming Arctic waters are threatening the delicate balance of temperature and salinity that keeps this waterfall flowing. A disruption could weaken AMOC, raising ocean temperatures, intensifying hurricanes, and shifting climate zones worldwide. Marine scientists already see early signs of impact, such as the weakening of winter winds along the Catalan coast. Out of sight, yet incredibly influential, the world's largest waterfall is a silent engine behind the rhythms of Earth's climate.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Skipper Shubman Gill blames ‘error of judgment' after India's loss at Lord's
India captain Shubman Gill (Photo by) London: India captain Shubman Gill said Rishabh Pant 's run-out in the first innings was the moment which pushed his team back in the third Test. 'We felt that Rishabh getting run-out in the first innings was the turning point. The way they were batting, we thought we could have taken a 50–100 run lead in the first innings. We knew the pitch was going to get tougher to bat on in the last innings,' Gill said after the match. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pant was run-out while trying to give the strike to KL Rahul on the stroke of lunch on the third day. Rahul later conceded that the duo had had a chat two overs earlier about trying to reach his hundred before lunch. Rahul had hit a long hop from Shoaib Bashir straight to deep point for a single, following which Pant tried to steal a single to put Rahul back on strike. Ben Stokes , however, effected a superb run-out at the bowler's end to wreck the duo's plans. Shubman Gill blames 'judgement error' as Rishabh Pant run-out haunts India in Lord's heartbreak Gill said there had been discussions in the dressing room about personal milestones being secondary. However, he came out in defence of Rahul on Monday evening. 'We do have those discussions. The team's cause is always important. I think Pant called for the run and it was Rahul who was going to the danger end. So, I believe it was more of an error in judgment,' Gill said. Poll Was Rishabh Pant's run-out the turning point in the match? Yes, it affected the team's momentum No, there were other factors While lamenting the top-order's failure on the final day, Gill mentioned that the team started believing once Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah got going in the second session. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Viral wajah Jokowi membengkak dan ruam menghitam saat ultah ke-64, sakit serius atau hanya alergi? CNA Indonesia Baca Undo 'The top order unfortunately didn't perform. It is the first time in the series that it happened. But it's a very proud team effort,' Gill said. 'When Bumrah and Jaddu bhai were batting, every five or six runs that we were scoring, we could see England were starting to feel the pressure. That's all we needed. A small partnership of 30, 40 runs could make such a huge difference. And we were quite optimistic when Siraj was batting. We thought if there were 12–15 runs to chase with the second new ball, a couple of boundaries here and there could have taken us there.' Gill also dispelled doubts over Pant's left index finger injury which prevented him from keeping wickets in the Test. 'Pant went for scans. Nothing major has come out of it. He should be fine for the Manchester Test,' Gill said. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

As Musk's 'robotaxi' rollout approaches, Democratic lawmakers in Texas try to throw up a roadblock
A group of Democratic lawmakers in Texas is asking Elon Musk to delay the planned rollout of driverless 'robotaxis' in the state this weekend to assure that the vehicles are safe. In a letter, seven state legislators asked Tesla to wait until September when a new law takes effect that will require several checks before autonomous vehicles can be deployed without a human in the driver's seat. Tesla is slated to begin testing a dozen of what it calls robotaxis for paying customers on Sunday in a limited area of Austin, Texas. "We are formally requesting that Tesla delay autonomous robotaxi operations until the new law takes effect on September 1, 2025," the letter from Wednesday, June 18, reads. "We believe this is in the best interest of both public safety and building public trust in Tesla's operations." Republicans have been a dominant majority in the Texas Legislature for more than 20 years. State lawmakers and Republican Gov. Greg Abbott have generally embraced Musk and the jobs and investment he has brought to Texas, from his SpaceX rocket program on the coast, to his Tesla factory in Austin. The company, which is headquartered in Austin, did not responded immediately to a request for comment from The Associated Press. Live Events The law will require companies to secure approval from the state motor vehicles department to operate autonomous cars with passengers. That approval, in turn, would depend on sufficient proof that the cars won't pose a high risk to others if the self-driving system breaks down, among other reassurances. Companies would also have to file detailed plans for how first responders should handle the cars if there is a problem, such as an accident. The letter was earlier reported by Reuters. Musk has made the robotaxi program a priority at Tesla and a failure would likely be highly damaging to the company's stock, which has already tumbled 20% this year. Musk's political views and his affiliation with the Trump administration have drastically reduced sales of Tesla, particularly in Europe, where Musk's endorsement of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany party in February's election drew broad condemnation. Tesla shares bottomed out in March and have rebounded somewhat in recent months. Much of the rise reflects optimism that robotaxis will not only be deployed without a hitch, but that the service will quickly expand to other cities and eventually dominate the self-driving cab business. Rival Waymo is already picking up passengers in Austin and several other cities, and recently boasted of surpassing 10 million paid rides. In afternoon trading Friday, Tesla shares were largely unchanged at $320.
