EU Sets 90% Emissions Cut by 2040

Israa Farhan The European Commission is set to propose a new legally binding target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, marking a key milestone in the European Union's long-term strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This anticipated legislation follows a 2023 recommendation by the Commission calling for a 90% cut in emissions compared to 1990 levels. The new proposal, expected on Wednesday, would turn that advisory target into a binding commitment for all EU member states. Currently, the EU mandates a 55% reduction in harmful emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The latest data from May shows that the bloc is on track to reach a 54% reduction by the end of the decade, narrowing the gap to the official 2030 target. The European Commission has urged national governments to fully implement their climate strategies to ensure that emission goals are met on schedule. These climate targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, which seeks to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. As part of its obligations under the agreement, the EU must submit a comprehensive climate action plan through 2035 before the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil this November. The overarching goal remains achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, balancing any emissions released with those absorbed naturally or through advanced technologies. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence"

Brazil Responds Strongly to Trump's Tariff Threats, Stresses Need for Respectful US Relations

In a forceful response to US President Donald Trump's recent threat to increase tariffs on Brazilian goods, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made it clear that Brazil would not back down from such a challenge. Speaking at a press conference in the Brazilian capital on Thursday, Lula emphasized that the country would retaliate if Trump follows through with his proposal. 'It's very simple: if he taxes Brazilian products, Brazil will reciprocate in taxing products that are exported from the United States,' Lula stated, reinforcing Brazil's stance on trade fairness. Lula, who has long advocated for a relationship based on mutual respect with the United States, also expressed his desire to strengthen the partnership between the two nations. The US remains Brazil's second-largest trading partner, after China, and Lula's comments underscored his intention to maintain and expand this vital economic relationship. 'I want to respect the United States and for Trump to respect Brazil. That's all,' he added, addressing the tensions in trade negotiations. While responding to Trump's controversial statements, Lula also shared his thoughts on the former president's calls to make Greenland part of the United States and his assertion to reclaim control of the Panama Canal. 'He just has to respect the sovereignty of other countries,' Lula stated firmly. In addition to economic concerns, Lula did not shy away from speaking on broader global issues. He highlighted the growing threats to democracy worldwide, warning that the rise of authoritarianism could undermine human rights and liberty. 'For me, democracy is the most important thing in humanity right now … Either we keep democracy working or we will have states more authoritarian than Hitler and fascism,' Lula said, stressing the urgency of global democratic preservation. As the world gears up for the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil later this year, Lula took a strong stand against Trump's withdrawal from the Paris climate accord, calling it 'a step back for human civilization.' Lula's remarks reflect his dedication to pushing for climate action on the global stage, positioning Brazil as a leader in advocating for environmental sustainability. This latest exchange marks a continuation of the ongoing trade tensions between Brazil and the United States, with both nations bracing for possible economic consequences if Trump moves forward with his tariff threats.
