Woody Johnson, New York Jets owner, buys 43% stake in Premier League club Crystal Palace

New York Jets owner Robert Wood Johnson , popularly know as 'Woody', is on the verge of entering English football, with Premier League side Crystal Palace confirming Monday that Johnson has signed a legally binding agreement to acquire fellow American John Textor 's 43% stake in the club. The deal, reported to be valued between $220 million and $260 million, is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, but Palace stated they foresee no obstacles. "Whilst the completion is pending approval. We do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club," Palace said in a statement. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Los ciudadanos chilenos pueden solicitar la ciudadanía estadounidense gc programa Undo — CPFC (@CPFC) "We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future." Live Events Johnson, who previously attempted to buy Chelsea in 2022, now succeeds in making his mark in English football. The timing of the deal is significant for Palace, who recently qualified for next season's UEFA Europa League following their FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City. Textor's dual ownership interests, particularly his stake in French club Lyon - which also qualified for the Europa League - posed a potential conflict under UEFA's multi-club ownership rules. Johnson's acquisition helps resolve that issue and clears Palace's path to European competition, further solidifying the club's ambitions on and off the pitch.

Crystal Palace confirm arrival of PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez on free transfer

Crystal Palace have confirmed an agreement to sign goalkeeper Walter Benitez as a free agent when his PSV Eindhoven contract expires this month. The 32-year-old Argentina international, whose contract expires on June 30, is expected to provide cover for Dean Henderson and potentially compete for the No 1 spot. Advertisement Benitez made 134 PSV appearances over three seasons, in which he helped his side to silverware in each campaign, including a dramatic title defence in 2024-25 as PSV overcame a nine-point deficit to beat Ajax to top spot. The goalkeeper won the KNVB Cup in 2022-23 and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2023 and 2024. Walter Benítez is Palace.#CPFC — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) June 23, 2025 Benitez previously made 188 appearances for Ligue 1 side Nice, and made his Argentina debut in March 2024 against Costa Rica. Benitez often features on the bench of his national team supporting Emiliano Martinez. FA Cup winners Palace had been looking to recruit a third senior goalkeeper after USMNT international Matt Turner's loan ended. Remi Matthews, who has made one first-team appearance since joining the club in 2021, signed a new two-year contract earlier in June. Young goalkeeper Owen Goodman has held talks with League One side Huddersfield Town over a potential loan move. The Athletic reported on June 10 that Ligue 1 side Lyon agreed an €8million (£6.74m) fee to sign Turner, who made four appearances for Palace on loan last season, from Nottingham Forest. Analysis from Thom Harris Benitez brings a wealth of experience between the sticks, a regular starter in goal for French top-flight side Nice across five seasons. In 2018-19, he was statistically the third-best shot-stopper in Europe's big five leagues, preventing almost 13 goals based on the quality of shots he faced. The Argentine also has European experience, starting all but one of PSV Eindhoven's Champions League games this season, while no player racked up more minutes for the Dutch side throughout their last two title-winning campaigns. Speaking to The Athletic in 2023, Benitez stressed the importance of keeping composed under pressure. He also spoke about his distribution, outlining his comfort with the ball at his feet and ability to switch up his game based on the opposition. The 32-year-old is a calming presence and can only serve to bolster Palace's goalkeeping depth.

Crystal Palace midfielder departs after eight years

Crystal Palace have announced that Jeffrey Schlupp will be leaving the club after eight and half years. Schlupp joined the South London club from Leicester City in January 2017, having won the Premier League title with the Foxes in the previous campaign. The versatile player was a firm favourite under Roy Hodgson, often filling in in midfield and defence, and notching over 200 appearances for the Eagles. After eight-and-a-half-years, Jeffrey Schlupp will be leaving the club this summer. Thank you for everything, Schluppy ❤️💙#CPFC — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) May 28, 2025 Following Oliver Glasner's arrival in 2023/24, Schlupp's game time decreased and he spent the second half of last season on loan at Celtic. 📸 Harriet Lander - 2024 Getty Images

🎥 OTD 2012: Zaha and Phillips star to send Palace to the Premier League

Crystal Palace have been a staple of the Premier League for the past 12 seasons, producing incredible consistency to finish between 15th and 10th in each campaign. Before that, the Eagles endured an eight-year hiatus from the English top-flight and even fended off administration and a near miss with relegation to League One in 2009/10. However, the South London club enjoyed an incredible run in the 2011/12 campaign, started by former player turned manager Dougie Freedman and finished off by Ian Holloway, who led Palace to the play-offs. After a memorable 2-0 win over rivals Brighton in the semi-final, Palace edged Watford in the final and a young Wilfried Zaha and a veteran journeyman in Kevin Phillips contributed with the decisive moments. Oliver Glasner urges Palace to chase more trophies as fans celebrate FA Cup win

It rained towards the end of the Eagles' open-top bus parade, which started at the top of Whitehorse Lane before making its way to Holmesdale Road, but the weather did not dampen the spirits of the large crowds who gathered along the route to soak in the unprecedented moment in their club's history. Lucky supporters who had snagged tickets to the 'Party in the Park' then welcomed their heroes at the 101-year-old ground, which next season will host Europa League football for the first time. 'It's very exciting, and we all will enjoy this journey, playing the Premier League, playing the Carabao Cup, playing the FA Cup and playing the Europa League,' Glasner said on stage. 'Four competitions, four titles to win, let's go for every single one.' Jean-Philippe Mateta, never change #CPFC — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) May 26, 2025 Austrian Glasner, 50, led Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory in 2022, and has been credited by players and his Palace bosses for transforming the mentality and ambition of the club since arriving in February 2024. 'I couldn't be more pleased to work with a group of players like they are,' he added. 'Not just because of their talent, they are great talents, but especially what great characters they are (and) I couldn't be more pleased to manage in a club like Crystal Palace with fans like you. 'We had tough moments in this season, but you were always behind us. You always supported us, and my feeling was we were always one Crystal Palace, and that's why we could win the trophy, that's why we could succeed, so thank you very much for your support, and let's keep going like this.' Goalkeeper Dean Henderson was one of the party's most boisterous participants, first leading a rendition of 'Glad all Over' on the bus, then the less family-friendly spin on 2010 World Cup anthem Waka Waka – poking fun at Palace's perennial 12th-place Premier League finishes – he first performed at Boxpark after Eberechi Eze's goal against Manchester City secured the Eagles' first major silverware. 'This is for the fans,' Henderson said. 'You deserve this. Enjoy it, and we'll be back next season with more, hopefully.' Colombian Daniel Munoz, celebrating his 29th birthday, was presented with the players' player of the season award by former captain Joel Ward, who played a significant role in Palace's promotion in 2012-13 and is leaving the club after 13 years. Ward said: 'It's been magical, honestly, to be a part of this club's history is incredible, this group of players, this group of staff and all these fans, we deserved it, and everyone should be on cloud nine. It's amazing. 'Absolutely (beyond my wildest dreams). There was certainly a bigger hand at play, and to end it on such a high, to end it on such an incredible day, is very special.'
