Left parties slam J&K L-G for ‘assault' on CM Omar Abdullah in Srinagar
Strongly condemning the police manhandling of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar, the Left parties accused Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha of undermining the smooth functioning of the duly elected State government. The CPI(M) Polit Bureau, in a statement in New Delhi, said that the Central government headed by the BJP is trying to enforce its own diktats and regressive points of view. The abolition of holiday on Martyrs' Day is an example of this, it said. 'On the other hand, the birthday of the Maharaja, responsible for killing freedom fighters, is declared a holiday. The Lt. Governor appointed by the Central government is undermining the smooth functioning of the duly elected State government,' the Polit Bureau said. The CPI(M) also criticised the house arrest of various J&K political leaders, including CPI(M)'s Yusuf Tarigami, who were prevented from paying homage to the martyrs. The party demanded that the holiday on Martyrs' Day be restored 'to respect and protect the democratic rights of the people of J&K'. It also demanded an apology from the Lt. Governor for the 'assault' on the CM. 'Breach of democratic norms' CPI general secretary D. Raja said that the incident was 'utterly unacceptable'. 'This is not just a breach of democratic norms. It's a blatant assault on our conscience and a reminder of how far governance in J&K has fallen under authoritarian unaccountable rule. CPI demands immediate restoration of statehood — no ifs, no buts — so that the people's representatives can truly serve, instead of being silenced and subjugated,' he posted on X. Mr. Abdullah, in a post on X, said that he was blocked from offering prayers at the graves of the martyrs on Sunday, at Naqsbandh Sahib shrine at Khawaja Bazar, where 22 civilians killed during an uprising against the Dogra ruler were buried. The Chief Minister scaled the fenced wall of the premises because the security forces had blocked the entrance of the graveyard. A police officer made a bid to stop him from offering 'fateha' at the graveyard.

Modi's rule posing greater danger to democracy than Emergency, alleges CPI(M) leader Raghavulu
CPI(M) Polit Bureau member B.V. Raghavulu has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rule is posing a greater danger to democracy and secularism than the Emergency imposed five decades ago. Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Tuesday, Mr. Raghavulu said the current political climate reflected an 'undeclared Emergency,' where voice of dissent was stifled and foreign policy was driven by external influence, particularly the United States. The CPI(M) would launch a campaign to educate the public about the dangers of authoritarianism, especially as June 25 marked 50 years since the declaration of Emergency in 1975. 'We must remember that CPI(M) and other parties fought tooth and nail against the Emergency. Today, the threat is even more insidious and demands united resistance,' he said. Referring to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Mr. Raghavulu alleged that the Modi government was inciting war hysteria instead of seeking peaceful, democratic solution to terrorism and international tensions. 'The Centre is withholding facts from the public. It is silent over U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that he mediated between India and Pakistan to prevent a war,' he alleged, adding that the Centre did not heed the demand to convene a special parliamentary session to bring the facts to light. The Central government was becoming subservient to Mr. Trump, he alleged. Israel's attack on Iran On Israel's attack on Iran, Mr. Raghavulu criticised the Modi government's 'muted response.' 'Despite India's deep economic ties with Iran, including crude oil imports and port construction, our government refuses to condemn Israel's actions. Instead, it supports them. This is morally and strategically indefensible,' the CPI(M) leader asserted, warning that such actions could escalate oil prices and harm India's economy. 'All democratic forces should come together to safeguard secularism, federalism, and constitutional values from the emerging fascist forces in the guise of governance,' he added. CPI(M) leader U. Vasuki and State Secretariat member Y. Venkateswara Rao were present.

Don't use religion to identify illegal migrants: CPI(M)
The government should deal with those who have entered the country illegally according to the well-laid-out procedures, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said in a statement on Saturday (May 31, 2025) in New Delhi. The party said that in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the BJP-led State governments and the Central government are targeting particularly Bengali-speaking Muslims and have, without any verification, pushed them to Bangladesh. According to reports, it said, some genuine Indian citizens, too, were arrested and sent to Bangladesh. In some cases, even those whose appeals were still pending before the Assam High Court and the Supreme Court were forcibly pushed back. 'This should not be allowed,' CPI(M) said. Calling the decision to 'push back' the 'suspected Bangladeshi citizens' as 'inhuman', the CPI(M) urged the government not to use religion to identify illegal migrants. 'Those who have entered the country through illegal means should be allowed access to a fair trial. Poor and undocumented migrants, who enter the country without any mala fide intentions, should be treated with dignity and dealt with according to the laid out procedures,' the Polit Bureau statement said. The party also flagged the BJP-led Assam government's recently approved policy to give arms licences to 'indigenous people living in vulnerable and remote areas.' 'This is a dangerous decision with far-reaching ramifications. It is the duty of the government to maintain law and order and also prevent infiltration. Pushing them back and arming communally selected sections of the people are not the solutions,' the CPI (M) Polit Bureau said in its statement.

PM, Governor, leaders greet Pinarayi on 80th birthday
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, State Ministers and political leaders extended birthday wishes to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who turned 80 on Saturday. According to party sources, there was no formal celebration as the veteran was engaged in his official duties. Mr. Vijayan's birthday came a day after the fourth anniversary of his second term as Chief Minister. Mr. Vijayan, a member of the CPI(M) Polit Bureau, has been serving as Chief Minister since May 25, 2016. People from various walks of life including political figures took to social media to wish Mr. Vijayan. The Prime Minister took to 'X' to wish him a long and healthy life. Sivankutty, actors Mohanlal and Mammootty also conveyed greetings to Mr. Vijayan on their social media handles. The senior Marxist leader had said that his birthday was on March 21, 1944 as per official records but his correct birth date was May 24, 1945.

Election Commission to develop new digital interface for voters, other stakeholders The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday (May 4, 2025) announced that it was developing a new, user-friendly digital interface for voters and other stakeholders such as election officials, political parties and the civil society. The new one-stop platform, ECINET, will integrate and reorient over 40 of the EC's existing mobile and web applications. It will subsume existing apps, such as the Voter Helpline app, Voter Turnout app, cVIGIL, Suvidha 2.0, ESMS, Saksham and the KYC app, which together had clocked over 5.5 crore downloads. The EC's new initiative comes amid allegations made by Opposition parties about voter roll manipulations, duplication of elector's photo identity cards (EPICs), as well as abnormalities in updating voter turnout data. Domestic violence, assault among most reported crimes to NCW The National Commission for Women (NCW) received 7,698 complaints this year, with domestic violence, assault, and criminal intimidation the most common grievances across India. Domestic violence topped the chart with a total of 1,594 complaints filed since the beginning of the year. The total comprised 367 cases in January, 390 in February, 513 in March, 322 in April, and two in May. The category alone accounted for nearly 20 per cent of all complaints, according to official data. Closely following were complaints of criminal intimidation, which saw 989 cases over the three months – 268 in January, 260 in February, 288 in March, 170 in April, and three in May. Assault was the third most commonly reported issue, with 950 complaints — 249 in January, 239 in February, and 278 in March, 183 in April and one in May. Other significant categories included dowry harassment with 916 complaints, rape and attempt to rape with 394, and molestation or outraging the modesty of women, with 310 complaints. Sexual harassment drew 302 complaints, while cybercrimes against women accounted for 110 cases. Though less frequent, categories like bigamy, sexual harassment at the workplace, and stalking were also reported. The board has expressed serious objections to the statement made by the government that there has been a 'shocking increase' in the number of Waqf properties uploaded in the central portal after 2013. The AIMPLB has accused the Centre of placing incorrect data and sought action against the officer concerned of the Ministry of Minority Affairs for filing a 'false affidavit'. 'It appears that in its affidavit, the Union of India is suggesting that all the properties registered as Waqf before 2013 were immediately uploaded on the WAMSI portal, when it became operational. At page 158, the first column with the title 'number of properties in 2013' to say that the number of Waqf properties reflected therein were the only registered properties is mischievous. 'The deponent of the counter-affidavit has not been candid to this court and, it appears, has carefully avoided making a statement that 'all the registered Waqf properties were uploaded on the web portal in the year 2013'. Since this crucial aspect is missing in the affidavit, the sanctity of this chart itself is seriously doubtful,' the AIMPLB has said.
