Algeria call up Mahious, Meziane in star-studded provisional squad for CHAN

Algeria's home-based national team coach, Madjid Bougherra, has named a provisional 28-man squad as preparations begin in earnest for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN). The selected players—drawn exclusively from the domestic league—are set to report to the National Technical Centre in Sidi Moussa on Sunday, 20 July, for a pivotal training camp that will shape the final squad for the tournament in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The squad is headlined by CHAN 2022 top scorer Aymen Mahious and features a strong representation from Algerian league champions MC Alger and runners-up CR Belouizdad, with six players each. USM Alger follows with four call-ups, while JS Kabylie and CS Constantine contribute three players apiece. The rest of the squad is rounded out by representatives from ASO Chlef, ES Sétif, and Paradou AC. This preliminary list is expected to undergo minor adjustments based on player performances during the camp and upcoming friendly matches. Algeria will be based in Group C at CHAN 2024, one of the most competitive groups, facing off against Uganda, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger. 2025 ⁦#LesVerts⁩ | ⁦#123VivaLAlgérie⁩🇩🇿 — Équipe d'Algérie de football (@LesVerts) July 19, 2025 As part of their build-up, the Desert Foxes A' will play two high-profile friendlies —offering a final opportunity for players to stake their claim before the continental showdown begins on August 2. Bougherra, who guided Algeria to the final of CHAN 2022 before losing on penalties to Senegal, is determined to go one better this time. With tactical preparations set to intensify, competition for places in the final squad promises to be fierce. But for now, this group of 28 forms the backbone of Algeria's quest for CHAN glory. 'Yes, Kaizer Chiefs called me regarding my son'

Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mayo has revealed that his former club reached out to him about the possibility of his son, Khanyiso Mayo, joining the team. The 26-year-old forward was heavily linked to Amakhosi last season, but the Algerian side CR Belouizdad managed to secure the signing of the Bafana Bafana striker. In an exclusive interview with Kick-Off , Mayo Sr. shared that he had a conversation with Kaizer Chiefs regarding his son. 'Yes, Kaizer Chiefs called me last week to find out if I would give Khanyisa my blessing to join the club,' said the former Bucks Bucks star. 'It is Khanyisa who will decide whether he wants to join them. 'I told Chiefs I would be happy to see Khanyisa at the club because that would be a historic moment. He would be following in his father's footsteps, and that would make me a proud father. 'But I did make it clear to Chiefs that if they are genuinely interested, they should speak to his current club and buy him, as his contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season,' he said. Mayo said if Amakhosi succeeded in signing Khanyiso, he should be given the number 21 jersey. 'I told Chiefs that they should assign him my jersey number 21 when he arrives at the club, not jersey number 10. 'They informed me they would get back to me with an update, so I'm still waiting for a response from Chiefs,' said the former PSL defender/striker. Chiefs have signed Flavio Silva as the only striker and will no doubt need another forward if they are to compete for top honours. MC Alger seal back-to-back Algeria titles despite final-day stalemate

Published: Sunday, 22 June 2025 MC Alger clinched a ninth Algerian Ligue 1 crown – and a second in succession – after a goalless draw with already-relegated Nejm Mogra on the final day of the 2024-25 season at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers on Saturday night. The point was enough to lift Khaled Ben Yahia's side to 58 points, two clear of bitter rivals JS Kabylie, who leapfrogged CR Belouizdad into second thanks to their own victory elsewhere. It means MC Alger stand alone as the country's third-most decorated league club, trailing only Kabylie (14 titles) and Belouizdad (10). Knowing a draw would guarantee the championship, the capital club controlled possession from the outset yet found Nejm Mogra's deep-lying defence obstinate. Early openings for Guinean forward Mohamed Salio Bangura were repelled, and a series of set-pieces from captain Sofiane Bendebka sailed narrowly wide. Nejm, condemned to the amateur ranks after finishing 15th on 31 points, rarely ventured forward but almost stunned the home crowd when forward Brahim Aït Lahcen flashed a half-volley past the post midway through the first half. Ben Yahia introduced Burkinabe midfielder Mohamed Zograna for Larbi Thabti at the break, later sending on Abdellah Boucharit and striker Hamza Bayezid in search of a breakthrough. The reshuffle, however, produced more territory than clear chances; Bangura's looping header in the 78th minute was the closest MC came, goalkeeper Samir Rahmani clawing the effort away. The final whistle sparked celebrations among more than 45,000 'Chnaoua', who unfurled banners commemorating the club's 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs triumph – still their solitary continental success. After falling to Orlando Pirates in last season's TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-finals, MC Alger have vowed to mount a deeper run next term. Chairman Mohamed Hakim Medane confirmed the board will 'strengthen two key positions' during the close season to help Ben Yahia's squad cope with domestic and African commitments. For Nejm Mogra, relegation ends a brief two-year stay in the top flight, while third-placed Belouizdad qualify for CAF inter-club competition via the league for a sixth straight season. Key numbers MC Alger – 58 pts JS Kabylie – 56 pts CR Belouizdad – 55 pts Titles in Algerian Ligue 1: JS Kabylie – 14 CR Belouizdad – 10 MC Alger – 9 MC Alger will return to action in late August when they begin their Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round.

Former Algerian International Djamel Menad Dies Aged 64

Former Algeria forward Djamel Menad has died aged 64 following a short illness, his ex-club JS Kabylie announced on Saturday. "The wider Algerian football family and JS Kabylie are in mourning following the announcement of the death of Djamel Menad, a former player and true legend of football in the country," JS Kabylie wrote on social media. "In recent weeks, the health of the former center-forward of the Algerian national team had deteriorated rapidly as a result of a devastating illness that struck him around two months ago," indicated news website TSA. Menad died in a clinic in Algiers where he had been hospitalized on March 14, after returning from Brussels where he had been receiving treatment for a month, reported Algerian football media DZfoot. Born on July 22, 1960 in the town of El Bayadh, Menad represented his country 79 times, scoring 25 goals, over a 15-year international career. Menad's efforts in helping Algeria reach the 1986 World Cup in Mexico resulted in him being named Algerian sportsman of the year in 1985. He was notably top scorer at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations, with four goals in five appearances as Algeria claimed the trophy on home soil. Over his club career, Menad played for Algerian sides JS Kabylie, CR Belouizdad and USM Alger. He also played in Europe for French club Nimes, as well as Portuguese sides Famalicao and Belenenses. Menad moved into coaching after his playing career and was most recently sporting director at JS Kabylie.

Mouloudia Club crowned Algerian Super Cup winners

Mouloudia Club of Oujda were crowned in the Algerian Super Cup winners after beating neighbours CR Belouizdad at the Stade du 5 Juillet. Mouloudia won the fourth Super Cup in its history, winning on penalties (4-3) after a 2-2 draw, at the end of a spectacular match at a packed stadium. CR Belouizdad (two titles) missed the opportunity to catch up with its rival in the list of winners of this event. The Mouloudia players started the game at an infernal pace, scoring two goals in the first half hour of play. Sofiane Bayazid opened the scoring in the 14th minute from the penalty spot. Mouloudia captain Ayoub Abdellaoui scored the second goal in the 27th minute of the match, giving his team a two-goal lead at half-time. The new coach of Belouizdad, Sead Ramovic returned from the break with a completely transformed team that managed to come back from the two goals in the second half. Aymen Mahious reduced the score in the 72nd minute thanks to a penalty awarded by the referee after consulting the VAR. The Algerian striker then scored twice and restored the balance in the 88th minute, thanks to a furious header that deceived the defense and the Mouloudia goalkeeper. The fate of the match was decided on penalties, an event that smiled on Mouloudia, who won 4-3. Mouloudia of Algiers won its second trophy of the 2024-25 season after winning the Algerian Championship. They still have one last chance at the title, with the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, which they have not won since their only title in 1976.
