Finding the right fare for RTS link

SINGAPORE: A study is currently being conducted to determine the fare for the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) train that is expected to run every 3.6 minutes during peak hours, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. 'We hope that with the right price mechanism in place, we can encourage more people to use the RTS Link. 'The whole idea of the project is to make a modal shift for people to use public transport to cross the Causeway,' he said at a joint press conference with his Singaporean counterpart here yesterday to unveil the first of the eight train sets that will be used for the cross-border service that is expected to commence by Jan 1, 2027. The decision on the fare will be made by RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), the joint venture company formed between Malaysia's Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd to operate the RTS Link service. The 4km route from Bukit Chagar in Johor to Woodlands North in Singapore will be served by eight train sets manufactured by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd. Singapore was represented at the event held at the Singapore Rail Testing Centre (SRTC) near Tuas by its acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow. Loke also said an open payment system is also expected to be introduced to provide greater convenience. 'We should have multiple modes of payment, like credit or debit cards, as well as Touch 'n Go,' he said. On the RTS Link's operating hours, Loke said the matter will be addressed closer to the opening date, though he quickly ruled out round-the-clock operations, citing the need for scheduled maintenance. Meanwhile, Siow said Singapore has no plans to reduce the frequency of bus services even after the RTS Link commences. 'We want to give commuters as many opportunities as possible to take public transport,' he added. The Causeway, which sees more than 300,000 daily commuters, is currently one of the busiest border crossings in the world. In a joint statement from the two ministries, it was announced that offsite systems integration testing for the first train set is scheduled to occur at SRTC over the coming months. Trains 02, 03, 04 and 05 have been delivered to CRRC's train facility in Batu Gajah, Perak, for assembly. This process will be replicated for Trains 06, 07 and 08, where, upon completion, the train sets will be transferred to the Wadi Hana Depot in Johor Baru for further testing and final preparations before being commissioned. The four-car train set has a white livery with red and blue accents – inspired by the colours of the Malaysia, Johor and Singapore flags. Each train set, measuring 76.4m in total, can be packed with up to 1,087 passengers each to enable the RTS service to move up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction. As of June 30, the RTS Link's system works are 56% complete. This includes trackwork, rolling stock (the trains), traction power, and the integration of signalling, communications, and control systems. Trackworks are expected to be completed by the end of this month, while the installation of the traction power supply equipment is currently in progress. Throughout July and August, key activities include the inspection, testing and commissioning of the traction power supply, including intertripping and interlocking systems. These works are essential to ensure the readiness of the power supply system to support train testing activities at Wadi Hana in September.

Following the recently secured medium-term syndicated credit facility for ~US$140M with the AFG Bank Cameroon and the Company's major shareholder and long-term supporter Eagle Eye Asset Holdings Pte Ltd exercising A$15.8M of its options, Canyon is now advancing critical site, port and rail development activities to ensure Stage One operations commence at Minim Martap in Q1, 2026. The Company has ordered 22 locomotives from CRRC and expects the first delivery to arrive in Q1 2026, ahead of the scheduled first bauxite shipment in 1H 2026. Canyon has appointed the main road construction contractor that will be responsible for upgrading the haulage road from Minim Martap, as well as supporting the development of the Inland Rail Facility (IRF) located in Ngaoundal. Groundbreaking at the IRF is expected to commence during the month of July, marking another significant milestone in the Company's Project development. Mr Mark Hohnen, Canyon Executive Chairman commented: 'Since we received our Mining Licence in late 2024, we have moved quickly to deliver on our vision of moving the Minim Martap Bauxite Project into production, and today's announcement is another big step forward in achieving this major goal. 'I am incredibly proud of the tireless effort and commitment displayed by our team in recent months to get to this point. The support from our strategic partner and major shareholder, Eagle Eye, has been critical in the progress we've made to date, and the ongoing support from key stakeholders and shareholders holds us in good stead as we continue to accelerate our work program and move towards production in 1H 2026. 'The loan agreement with AFG Bank Cameroon and the proceeds from Eagle Eye's option exercise has put us in a strong position to advance critical workstreams for Stage One operations at Minim Martap. With the key contracts in place or close to being finalised, Canyon can now work towards finalising the Definitive Feasibility Study, which has a dedicated focus on a two stage ramp up strategy, positioning us for success upon the commencement of production. 'Progress across all key aspects of the development of Minim Martap is on schedule and we anticipate breaking ground at the Inland Rail Facility in the coming weeks. The IRF, which is situated near the existing Makor Railway Station, will serve as the loading station for wagons of bauxite ore brought by road from the Project. The construction of this key piece of infrastructure will secure our transport supply chain from the mine to the Port of Douala, where we will then ship to our offtake customers. 'In addition, we are also working towards updating Minim Martap's Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Estimate and expect to release the results to the market very soon. These successive achievements underpin the strong recognition from the authorities in Cameroon, the local community, and our team in establishing Minim Martap as a key bauxite operation. 'We are excited to keep this momentum going and establish Canyon as a key supplier of high-quality bauxite ore into a market that urgently needs new sources of long-term supply.' Signing of the locomotive order with CRRC Ziyang Co. Ltd (CRRC) This announcement has been approved for release by the Canyon's Board of Directors. China's CRRC Dalian to ship ECRL trains to Malaysia in October, set for 2027 launch

DALIAN (China), June 23 — The first two sets of Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, along with two electric locomotives for cargo transportation under the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, are expected to be shipped out from Dalian, China to Malaysia in October this year. The first batch of ECRL trains will be shipped by the manufacturer, CRRC Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co., Ltd (CRRC Dalian), a wholly-owned subsidiary of CRRC Corp, and the shipment is expected to take around one month to reach Malaysia. CRRC Dalian vice-president Zhang Jian said the company will provide a 'full life cycle service' for the ECRL fleet, covering the entire process — from product research and development, production and operation, to final maintenance and servicing. 'For the ECRL project, we can continue cooperating across the full life cycle in the future to ensure reliable operation of the trains on Malaysia's railway lines,' he told the Malaysian media delegation at CRRC Dalian's headquarters, here. Dalian is a coastal city in northeastern China's Liaoning Province, located about 800 km southeast of Beijing, known for its major port and strong manufacturing industry. In August 2022, CRRC Dalian signed a supply contract with China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCCECRL), the main contractor of the ECRL project, to deliver 11 train sets of EMUs and 12 electric locomotives. Zhang said the trains will have completed factory commissioning in Dalian prior to shipment. 'Upon arrival, they will undergo testing on-site. The first EMU needs to undergo 8,000 km of testing, while the subsequent batch requires 5,000 km of testing,' he said. The EMUs are designed to carry passengers at speeds of up to 160 km per hour (km/h), while the electric locomotives, operating at 120 km/h, will be used for cargo transportation. Technical experts from CRRC Dalian will also be deployed to Malaysia to provide on-site servicing and training. 'There are two groups; one group will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of the EMUs and locomotives, and the other group will provide technical training to local personnel, helping them acquire maintenance skills,' he noted. He said the company will also provide two-year warranty services for the EMUs and electric locomotives. The arrival of the first trains by end-2025 will ensure readiness for the ECRL's scheduled launch in 2027. As of October 2020, CRRC Dalian has produced 12,800 locomotives across more than 70 diesel and 13 electric models, accounting for half of China's total locomotive fleet. Since its first export of mainline locomotives to Myanmar in 1993, CRRC Dalian has supplied rail vehicles to 27 countries, including Malaysia, South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina, Uzbekistan, India, Nigeria and Hong Kong. — Bernama

Confident of supplying 2 driverless trains a month for Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line from August: Titagarh

Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), which designs and manufactures driverless trains for Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line (Electronic City) corridor, has said it will deliver its fourth train in July and two trains a month from August. Speaking to TRSL Deputy Managing Director Prithish Chowdhary said, 'We will be delivering the fourth train next month and two trains every month from August to BMRCL (Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited). We are very confident in our strength and capabilities. Our team is geared up, and we see no challenges in manufacturing as of now.' Initially set to be commissioned in 2021, the 18-km Yellow Line, connecting RV Road and Bommasandra via Electronic City, is marred by a rolling-stock supply crisis, leading to extensive delays. The coaches for the driverless Bengaluru Metro are manufactured by Chinese firm CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd, along with TRSL, as part of the Make-in-India Initiative. The Chinese firm won a Rs 1,578-crore contract in 2019 to supply 216 coaches to BMRCL. Major challenges included visa processing for Chinese engineers in view of the Galwan valley clash, supply-chain disruptions of raw materials due to the Covid pandemic, and the adoption of new technology by Indian engineers. Explaining the reason for delay, Vijay Subramanian, CEO, Passenger Rolling Stock, TRSL, said, 'Learning gap is now history. It was more of a teething problem initially. Our technology partners were CRRC, and all procurement and resourcing came from China. We were doing complete assembly here under CRRC's supervision. We also faced difficulties bringing CRRC people from China and commissioning engineers from Korean companies due to visa issues. We lost a lot of time, but now all problems are resolved. We have a huge contingent of CRRC people (55 Chinese engineers) at TRSL today, and we are almost in a serial mode of production.' Further, company officials also attributed the delay to inspections undertaken by internal safety and quality control teams as well as CRRC and BMRCL officials before dispatching the coaches for delivery. The coaches are being designed and built to be operational for the next 35 years. Additionally, the coaches also undergo various safety and quality control tests before commissioning. It includes static, dynamic, and mainline testing involving integration of technology, synchronisation of the technology with the metro systems and trial runs on the mainline, before throwing up the line for revenue services. For the production infrastructure of Bengaluru Metro, TRSL also set aside an outlay of over Rs 1,000 crore, of which a large part has already been spent. 'We (Titagarh) had experience making aluminum coaches, which is more complex than stainless steel, so we proved our capability. Discussions with CRRC led to a strong partnership. We invested heavily in setting up the stainless steel line, robotics, jigs, fixtures, and training. About Rs 1,000 crore is the total capital outlay between 2022 and 2027, with a large part already spent,' Chowdhary said. On working with CRRC, Subramanian said, 'The key learning was the stainless steel process, robotic line, and setting up facilities using CRRC's expertise. As the world's largest rolling-stock manufacturer, CRRC's decades of knowledge were invaluable. We leveraged their insights to establish our facilities.' Meanwhile, BMRCL is also contemplating commissioning the line with the already delivered three train sets at 30-minute intervals with stops at certain stations. 'However, the operations across all 16 stations on the Yellow Line are expected between August and September, pending the delivery of additional driverless train sets and final safety approvals from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety,' said a BMRCL official. Local pickleballers fare well at 55+ Games, funding at risk

From June 3–5, well over 1,000 senior athletes converged on Steinbach to participate in the 2025 Manitoba 55+ Games. At least three residents from Ritchot and Niverville emerged with medals thanks to their dedication to and love of pickleball. Taking silver were Neal Hastings of St. Adolphe, as well as Perry Daigle of St. Pierre-Jolys. Also from St. Adolphe was Gerard Gill, who walked away with a bronze medal. Daigle and Gill are regulars to Niverville's CRRC daytime pickleball programming. The senior men's pickleball competition took place on the morning of June 5. Hastings and Bradford Neal Hastings and his partner Ken Bradford of St. Andrews were registered in the 60–64 age group of the 4.0 category. In the Manitoba Games, this is the highest category in which one can register. The duo walked away with a silver after five round robin and two playoff games. As impressive as the second-place finish is, though, Hastings says it wasn't his personal best. 'I won a gold medal in Halifax in the men's 60+ [category] last year,' says Neal. 'I've won a few gold medals in provincial tournaments over the years, so I kind of hoped I'd do better.' Hastings has played with a variety of different partners in men's pickleball competitions, as well as partnering with his wife when he plays in the mixed category. Together, the husband-wife team took gold medals at the 2022 and 2024 Manitoba Games and silver medals in 2023 and 2025. The pair first became interested in the sport four years ago and they haven't looked back since. As winter snowbirds, they play numerous times per week in warmer climes. When back on home turf, Hastings plays with a group of friends at the Dakota Community Centre. Hastings is also involved in the organization of the Pickleball Canada National Championships, which is coming to Winnipeg this year. Already, he says, more than 700 people are registered to play at the Taylor Tennis Centre, where 32 courts will be set up for the event. Why is pickleball such a growing phenomenon within the senior community? Hastings says there are a number of factors. 'It's physical fitness, it's a whole bunch of laughs, and it's getting together with [friends] three times a week and just having a good time.' Daigle and Poirier Competing in the 60–64 age bracket at a 3.0 level was Perry Daigle and his partner Ron Poirier, staff sergeant of the St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP department. For Daigle, the Manitoba Games were a completely new experience, having only played a number of lowkey tournaments in Niverville prior. 'The facilities [in Steinbach] were wonderful,' Daigle says. 'They had nine courts in the new arena. I'd never made it to the finals anywhere before, so [it was interesting that] they had a referee monitoring the [lines] and the score.' For Daigle and Poirier, the gold medal was well within reach as they played a nip-and-tuck closing game. Leading their opponents with a score of 11–10, the opposition jumped ahead in the end to nab the win. Daigle joined the pickleball craze only two years ago. He admits that he draws on his ping pong skill from decades earlier. Court dimensions, he believes, is one of the reasons that pickleball captures the interest of senior citizens. 'It's the size of the court and the number of people,' Daigle says. 'You have only a little bit of real estate to look after, which is doable for people our age.' Gill and Gerylo Partners Gerard Gill and Gary Gerylo played in the 65–69 age group at a level of 3.0. The games in Steinbach qualified as Gill's second time in the Manitoba competition. Until recently, Gill's sport of preference was badminton, in which he has competed on a national level, including at the U.S. national seniors games, which boasts itself as the largest seniors multisport event in the world. For Gill, pickleball felt like a natural transition from there. 'The switch to pickleball was necessitated by my shoulder,' Gill says. 'All those overhead strokes in badminton and my shoulder said, 'That's enough!' So I took up pickleball.' While competition is in his blood, he admits that, these days, entering events like the Manitoba Games is mostly about meeting like-minded people and having fun. 'I thought [the Steinbach Games] were really well run,' Gill says. 'The times were accurate and it flowed really well. I hadn't been in that Southeast Event Centre before and it's gorgeous.' The Seniors Games The Manitoba 55+ Games take place every other year, in odd years. Winners of the provincial competitions can move on to the Canada 55+ Games, held in even years. Steinbach played host to the Manitoba Games twice before, in 1993 and 2011. Unfortunately for the winners of the 2025 provincial games, there will be no Canada 55+ games in 2026. According to the Canadian Senior Games Association (CSGA), next year's nationals, which were scheduled to take place in Winnipeg, have been postponed to 2028 due to funding challenges and rapid growth in participation. 'This is such an unfortunate situation where we have a national event that encourages so many seniors to stay both physically and mentally active, and yet, despite constant door knocking, emails, and grant applications, we can't find the funding to support it,' says CSGA President Dave Finn. Supporters and participants are encouraged to contact their local members of Parliament to encourage government funding that ensures the long-term success of the national games. Error!
