Zimbabwe players' rage boils after Lhuan-dre Pretorius refuses to walk despite snick, baffled at on-field umpire's call

Lhuan‑dre Pretorius became the youngest South African to smash a century in Test cricket on Saturday; however, he had fortune favouring him during his maiden Test against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo. With South Africa reeling at 24/3 on a day everything seemed to crumble, Pretorius strode to the crease just as pressure mounted. He saw Wiaan Mulder being dismissed during his stay at the crease that put the Proteas under further pressure, with another debutant – Dewald Brevis – joining him in the middle. Zimbabwe players weren't impressed with Lhuan-dre Pretorius not walking after edging the delivery(X) In the 25th over, with the score at 68/4 and debut nerves swirling, Pretorius faced Tanaka Chivanga's delivery outside off-stump, leaning in to drive. However, the ball nipped in sharply, clipping the inside edge with a woody 'thud' that echoed off the bat and straight into the keeper's gloves. Zimbabwe players leapt into action, appealing fiercely for a caught-behind. The umpire, surprisingly, adjudged him not out, which sent the Zimbabwean fielders in disbelief. Interestingly, one of the Zimbabwe players also went up to Pretorius and taunted him, saying he should've walked by himself. Watch: The incident marked a turning point. Rather than retreat, Pretorius seized momentum, digging in resolutely and converting a narrow escape into a spectacular stand. He added 95 runs for the fifth wicket alongside fellow debutant Dewald Brevis, who had earlier blasted a breathtaking 41-ball fifty. Their partnership pulled South Africa into a position of strength, a direct contrast to the morning's collapse. Pretorius eventually scored a brilliant 153, showcasing his temperament and talent. His innings was a blend of calculated footwork and aggressive intent, with 11 crisp fours and four sixes.. That knock not only lifted the innings but also catapulted him into the record books as the youngest South African centurion in Tests, surpassing Graeme Pollock's 1964 mark at 19 years, 317 days. Pretorius achieved the feat at 19 years, 93 days. Credited to a breakthrough SA20 season with 397 runs for Paarl Royals, Pretorius carried that momentum into the CSA 4-Day Series, compiling 436 runs at 72.66, including three hundreds and a fifty. Despite a slow start, South Africa comfortably went past the 300-run mark during the third session, with Corbin Bosch also smashing a half-century. For the hosts, Tanaka Chivanga was the pick of the bowlers on Day 1; by the time of writing this copy, he had picked four wickets for 67, with an opportunity to complete a five-wicket haul.

Historic! Lhuan-dre Pretorious breaks 61-year record, becomes youngest South African centurion on Test debut

Lhuan-dre Pretorious (Pic credit: CSA) Teenage batting sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorious etched his name into South African cricket history on Saturday, becoming the youngest ever South African to score a Test century on debut. The 19-year-old achieved the feat during the first Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, breaking a 61-year-old record held by the legendary Graeme Pollock . Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Coming to the crease with South Africa reeling at 23 for 3, Pretorious displayed nerves of steel and a fearless approach, smashing an unbeaten 128 off just 141 deliveries by the end of the second session. His innings, laced with seven fours and four sixes, came at a brisk strike rate of 90.78 and helped steady a new-look Proteas side in early trouble. The young right-hander surpassed Pollock's long-standing milestone — set in 1964 when the iconic left-hander scored a century at 19 years and 317 days against Australia in Sydney. Pretorious, at just 19 years and 93 days, has now become the youngest centurion for South Africa in Test cricket. He also stitched together a crucial 95-run partnership for the fifth wicket with fellow debutant Dewald Brevis, who made an explosive 51 off 41 balls, including three fours and four sixes. Pretorious had been knocking on the national door after a stellar domestic season. He scored 436 runs in five matches during the 2024/25 CSA 4-Day Series at an average of 72.66, including three centuries. He had also impressed in the SA20 league earlier this year, scoring 397 runs in 12 matches for the Paarl Royals. At tea, South Africa reached 248 for 6, with Pretorious (128*) and Corbin Bosch (22*) holding the fort. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.

Wiaan Mulder: Proteas debutants can put pressure on regulars

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder said the five uncapped players in the Proteas squad for the two-Test series in Zimbabwe are eager to prove they deserve their call-up. The Proteas face Zimbabwe in two Tests in Bulawayo, starting on Saturday and July 6, with several big names missing out. According to The Citizen, Test captain Temba Bavuma is out due to the hamstring injury he picked up in the World Test Championship final victory two weeks ago, while Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have been rested. Recently injured fast bowlers Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams were not considered for selection. Lungi Ngidi will join the squad for the second Test. Five Proteas debutants? Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, Dewald Brevis and Prenelan Subrayen are set to make their debuts. There is also a recall for Zubayr Hamza. Mulder, who mustered scores of six and 27 and took one wicket during the Test final, described it as a 'new squad'. 'There are a lot of guys here who want to prove a point: Why they are here, how well they have played over the last couple of domestic seasons to get here,' he said. On that note, 19-year-old Pretorius has played just six first-class matches but made an immediate impact with three centuries in his first five games, including one in the CSA 4-Day Series final. He boasts an average of 65.57 in the format. Likewise, Brevis followed up a good SA20 run with a decent IPL. In the longer format, he was the second-leading run-scorer in the 4-Day Series, with 573 runs in 12 innings, including two hundreds and two fifties, averaging 47.75. Senokwane and Hamza were the fourth- and fifth-leading run scorers in the 4-Day Series. Subrayen and Yusuf were the second- and sixth-leading wicket takers. OPINION: Mind-boggling Proteas are resting players for Zim Tests Debutants to put pressure on established Proteas 'We compete at every practice, and I'm pretty sure when we get into that Test match, the guys who are going to fill the spot for… take someone like Ricks [Ryan Rickelton] or Marco [Jansen], are going to put them under pressure when they come back,' Mulder added. 'That's the exciting part about having such a talented group here in Zim.' He said the Proteas have had conversations around their identity, that whoever plays is still ''the best team at the time and we look at ourselves as world champions'. 'Everybody has that in the back of their minds. We are training like we are the best in the world, not like we are trying to become something new.'

Picture: Sydney Seshibedi/Gallo Images A total of five uncapped players have been included in the 16-man Proteas squad for a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo starting later this month. Among the new faces are Titans batting duo Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Lesego Senokwane, both of whom have received their maiden call-ups to the national setup. They are joined in the squad by another first-timer, Lions fast bowler Codi Yusuf. At just 19, Pretorius enjoyed a breakout season in the CSA 4-Day Series. He struck three hundreds in five first-class games at an impressive average of 72.66, including a crucial 114 in the final that helped secure a hard-fought draw for the Titans against the Lions. Senokwane also impressed with the bat, amassing 559 runs with two centuries to his name. Both players also recently made their South Africa A debuts against West Indies A. Yusuf, meanwhile, has been a standout performer for the Lions. The right-arm seamer claimed 23 wickets at an average of 22.39, playing a pivotal role in guiding his side to a second successive appearance in the 4-Day Series final. Players rewarded for domestic form The other uncapped players in the squad are Titans batter Dewald Brevis, the second-highest run-scorer in the domestic first-class competition this past season, and Dolphins off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen, though both have previously toured with the senior side. Earlier this week, Subrayen's form was on full display in SA 'A's four-day win over West Indies A, where he delivered with both bat and ball, scoring an unbeaten half-century and picking up five wickets in the West Indies team's second innings. The squad also sees the recall of Lions batter Zubayr Hamza, marking his return since his last appearance against New Zealand in February last year. Senior players rested Several players – Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs – have been rested for the series. Fast bowling trio Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams, who have had recent injury struggles, were not considered for selection. In their absence, coach Shukri Conrad was pleased to be able to give opportunities to some younger players. 'This tour provides the ideal platform to expose them to the demands of Test cricket and see how they respond,' Conrad said. 'It's also our first tour to Zimbabwe since 2014, so we're really looking forward to heading over there later this month.'
