Super Gillies finish league stage on a perfect note

The Chepauk Super Gillies juggernaut continued to steamroll opponents and made it a perfect seven in the league stage of TNPL-9, beating Siechem Madurai Panthers by six wickets (DLS method) in its final group encounter at the NPR College Ground here on Saturday. The victory meant CSG became the second team, after Albert Tuti Patriots in 2017, to win all its league matches in the competition. Chasing 157, every Super Gillies top-order batter stroked valuable cameos to keep the asking rate in check. The four-time champion was cruising at 71 for three in 9.2 overs when the players walked off due to insect infestation. Once play resumed, Super Gillies's revised target was 114 in 14 overs. Vijay Shankar and N. Jagadeesan quickly hit a few huge sixes and closed out the game with seven balls to spare. The victory, though, was set up by CSG's bowlers Vijay Shankar (three for 23) and M. Silambarasan (two for 19), whose miserly spells restricted the Madurai outfit to just 156 for seven after the match was delayed by an hour due to rain. Skipper N.S. Chaturved and M.A. Atheeq Ur Rahman gave the Panthers a great platform, taking their side to 60 for two in the PowerPlay. Game-changer A late surge from Ashwin and Gurjapneet took Panthers past 150, but it was not enough, as the 2018 champion crashed out of the tournament following its fifth defeat of the season. The scores: Siechem Madurai Panthers 156/7 in 20 overs (N.S. Chaturved 31, M.A. Atheeq Ur Rahman 41, M. Ashwin 38, Vijay Shankar 3/23, M. Silambarasan 2/19) lost to Chepauk Super Gillies 114/4 in 12.5 overs (M. Ayush 2/20). CSG won by six wickets on DLS method.

Sagar Kavach security exercise underway in coastal districts of central region

A two-day coastal security exercise, 'Sagar Kavach', commenced in the coastal districts of central region in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday to assess the level of preparedness and alertness of stakeholders involved in coastal security. The exercise, which concludes on Thursday, is being carried out in Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts. Surveillance was stepped up along the coastal areas as part of the exercise. The Coast Guard, Indian Navy, district police, Coastal Security Group of the Tamil Nadu Police and other stakeholders are involved in the joint exercise that started in the early hours. One of the objectives of the drill is to review the preparedness of the stakeholders to thwart intrusion of terrorists through the sea route. Police personnel deployed at check posts in the coastal areas in the five districts carried out intensive vehicle checks. The Coastal Security Group personnel carried out patrolling in the sea using their patrol boats checking the boats of fishermen in the sea and those anchored at the fishing harbours. The coastal villages were brought under the scope of heightened surveillance with CSG personnel looking out for any suspicious movements and sensitising the fishermen. Vigil was also mounted at high value targets situated in the coastal areas. Police sources said the exercise was mainly aimed at assessing the level of preparedness and alertness of the stakeholders involved in coastal security while dealing with maritime threats. As part of the exercise, a couple of Red Force teams comprising security personnel were sent as dummies in Nagapattinam district to act as aggressor force. The Red Force teams were 'secured' by the CSG personnel at Velankanni and Nagore.

Aparajith sizzles as Super Gillies edges Grand Cholas in a thriller

Skipper B. Aparajith top-scored with 63 (40b, 1x4, 7x6) and stitched a 106-run third-wicket stand (68 balls) with Vijay Shankar (59, 46b, 6x4, 1x6) as Chepauk Super Gillies (CSG) beat Trichy Grand Cholas (TGC) by four runs in a thriller in their Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match at the Chennai Super Kings ground here on Monday. Vijay Shankar's was a streaky, struggling innings in contrast to Aparajith's assured knock. Aparajith smashed seven sixes - one straight off left-arm spinner Ganesh Moorthi, and six on the leg side. He hit medium-pacer Easwaran for back-to-back sixes to long- on, and pulled left-arm spinner Sanjay Yadav for two sixes to deep midwicket in the same over. Vijay Shankar, on the other hand, was dropped on 13 by Waseem Ahmed at deep midwicket off medium-pacer Rajkumar. He edged three fours and failed to connect at least four times. He brought up his maiden TNPL fifty with authority, though, hitting a slower ball wide of long on for a six off Easwaran. The 82-run second-wicket partnership between captain J. Suresh Kumar (63, 40b, 6x4, 2x6) and J. Kousik (45, 33b, 2x4, 3x6) was the highlight of Grand Cholas' 179-run chase. The duo struck three sixes in an over off left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas - both hitting to deep midwicket once, besides Kousik hitting to long on. CSG medium-pacer Prem Kumar (three for 42) accounted for both of them, getting Kousik bowled while Suresh Kumar holed out to Dinesh Raj at deep midwicket. CSG's debutant left-arm seamer Rohith Suthar successfully defended 11 in the last over. The scores: Chepauk Super Gillies 178/5 in 20 overs (B. Aparajith 63, Vijay Shankar 59) bt Trichy Grand Cholas 174/7 in 20 overs (J. Suresh Kumar 63, J. Kousik 45, Prem Kumar 3/42). Toss: Grand Cholas. Tuesday's match: Lyca Kovai Kings vs Idream Tiruppur Tamizhans (7.15 p.m.).
