A CUMBRIAN firm in the Longtown area could get a new car park if the plans for the change of use are approved by planners at Cumberland Council. The application was validated on Wednesday (June 4) and it is for a site at Cumbria Logistics which is based at Sandysike Industrial Estate. According to a planning statement the site is approximately 10 miles north of Carlisle next to the A7 road The report states: 'The land in the area of the site was originally used by 14MU for the MOD but was changed to an industrial estate when it was no longer required for that purpose. It is now designated for employment use in the Carlisle District Local Plan. 'The site used by Cumbria Logistics extends to some 1.4hectares (3.5 acres). The new car park area, ie the red line site for this application, extends to 0.33 hectares. The appropriate notices have been served on the owners of the land to inform them of this planning application. 'The company operate a trans-shipment centre from the site which involves operating some 39 heavy goods vehicles and five vans which deliver goods within Cumbria and the borders.' According to the report the business serves the north of England and the Scottish Borders. It adds: 'The business involves large goods vehicles arriving early in the morning at the site then being unloaded and the goods transferred to smaller vehicles for delivery to customers.' Cumbrian MP raises concerns after proposals to ban small boats from smaller lakes
A CUMBRIAN MP has raised concerns around new bylaws proposed by the national park authority around the banning of small boats on smaller lakes in the Lake District. Markus Campbell-Savours, MP for Penrith and Solway, has said he is concerned that a new byelaw being proposed by the Lake District National Park Authority could see fishermen who use small powerboats banned from some of the smaller lakes. Markus Campbell-Savours said: 'I think this proposed byelaw is a mistake with the potential to unfairly hit fishermen, many of whom have been responsibly fishing the lakes and rivers of Cumbria for generations. 'I want members of the LDNPA to meet me at Bassenthwaite so they can see that any fears about noise, safety, or the environment, in relation to small Lakeland fishing boats with electric motors are misguided. This proposed byelaw will unfairly impact people who the national park should value as an important partner. 'It was in fact the late Bob Smeaton and other fishermen who alerted Dale Campbell-Savours MP to the perilous state of Bassenthwaite in the 1990s, which ultimately secured the upgrade of the sewage treatment works at the east end of the lake. 'I say to the national park authority - far from being a problem, fishermen are our eyes and ears – or as one Keswick fisherman put it to me – 'we are your canaries in the coalmine.'' Concerns have previously been raised around the new by laws by anglers who believe the proposed by laws are 'discriminatory'. The Lake District National Park Authority have previously said that the 'informal consultation' is the first step in 'a lengthy process' to amend the Small Lakes Byelaws.

In order to raise more awareness and money the church is holding a series of free events of the weekend of June 6, 7 and 8. The clear glass windows are most in need of repair (Image: Supplied) On Friday, June 6, BBC antiques expert Paul Laidlaw will be valuing antiques and collectors' items, including jewellery, watches, militaria, and any antiques. There will also be an organ recital by David T Shingler on Friday, June 6. On Saturday, June 7, there will be a performance by the Border Concert Band and Sunday, June 8, at 3.30pm, there will be a Songs of Praise session hosted by two members of the Salvation Army. The fundraising weekend will end with a quiz night hosted by comedian and musician, Tom Elliott. St Mary's Wigton is run by the Reverend Richard Corrie who said that the fundraising effort was harbouring 'community spirit' in the town. Reverend Richard Corrie (Image: Supplied) 'Church buildings take a lot of upkeep,' said Rev'd Richard. 'A lot of fundraising is needed to keep church buildings going these days, so it is hard work. 'The church here at Wigton is at the heart of the town and the community is pulling together to help. 'We're specifically putting these events on as most of them are 'non-churchy' because we want all the community to be involved, as the church building gets used by community groups and the schools all the time.' St Mary's will continue to raise money throughout the next year and donations can be made online.
