CM: Govt settled site debate by setting up 3 nat'l law univs
Nagpur: CM Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the Maharashtra govt under him took the historic decision of setting up three national law universities (NLUs)—at Mumbai, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—to settle the debate over its location nearly a decade ago. He pointed out that no state in the country has such an arrangement, Fadnavis highlighted the role played by then CJI Sharad Bobde as well as CJI Bhushan Gavai, then with the Nagpur bench of Bombay HC, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and himself in chalking out a plan for bringing Maharashtra NLU to Nagpur. In a lighter vein, Fadnavis said he witnessed the growth of MNLU in different capacities—as CM, leader of opposition, deputy CM and then CM again. Fadnavis said it is equipped with all facilities for quality education. "The surrounding environment enhances the natural beauty of the campus. Funds have been allocated for the university in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and land has been selected for the Mumbai campus. Three significant pre-Independence laws have been amended; not merely renamed but Indianised. These changes will enable the use of new technology, speed up judicial processes and increase conviction rates," said Fadnavis. As India becomes the world's fourth largest economy, the CM said, swift resolution of commercial and investment-related cases is essential to attract investment. "India's Constitution is the finest, establishing an ideal as a sustainable value. To face the challenges of a changing world, students have no better platform than this university. Challenges like cybercrime and cyber breaches exist, but artificial intelligence offers opportunities. Students must take responsibility for bringing positive changes to the legal field through technology." Putting the onus on teachers, he said the university should now provide education in innovation, creativity and modern processes, alongside academics. "Govt will fully support all initiatives to make this university the best and self-sufficient." Acknowledging Fadnavis's efforts in establishing the university and its modern facilities, Union minister Gadkari said this will lead to the institution's qualitative growth. "Updating knowledge is crucial, and this university will set an excellent example. Knowledge is a great power that must be transformed into wealth. By leveraging modern technologies like digital advancements, the university should achieve commendable performance globally," he said. Cataract remains a leading cause of preventable blindness due to delayed treatment and misconceptions
New Delhi: Cataract remains a significant source of preventable blindness, especially for elderly individuals. Unfortunately, many Indians postpone treatment because of widespread misconceptions and insufficient knowledge. In light of June being Cataract Awareness Month, health experts said detecting cataracts early could prevent unnecessary vision loss. Worldwide statistics indicate that cataract is responsible for 33% of blindness cases. In India, cataract accounts for more than 66% of cases of blindness. Dispelling common myths about cataracts, Dr Mahipal Singh Sachdev, chairman & medical director, Centre for Sight Group of Eye Hospitals, explained, "Many people delay surgery due to myths and fears. A common myth is that cataracts only affect the elderly. While ageing is a major factor, cataracts can also be caused by diabetes, steroid use, UV exposure, trauma, and even affect children. Another myth is that eyedrops, diet or exercises can cure cataracts, but scientific evidence supports surgery as the only effective treatment. Some infants may develop congenital cataracts. Talking about the age group mainly affected, Dr Ashu Agarwal, senior ophthalmology consultant, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said that while cataracts predominantly affected those over 60 years, lens clouding can develop earlier in individuals with specific risk factors like diabetes, trauma or family history. Congenital cataracts occur rarely in newborns. Due to increasing lifestyle-related risks, early-onset cataracts are now seen in adults as young as 40. "The decision to undergo cataract surgery should be based on how the condition affects one's daily activities," said Agarwal. "When tasks like reading, operating a vehicle or identifying people become challenging and impact lifestyle negatively, surgical intervention should be considered. Contemporary surgical techniques have advanced significantly, enabling successful treatment in early stages without waiting for complete cataract maturation. " Dr Anil Solanki, associate consultant, ophthalmology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, indicated that mature cataract caused blindness and potentially angle closure glaucoma, leading to permanent vision loss, with surgery was the only viable treatment. Dr Sachdev assured that cataract surgery was among the safest medical procedures, performed under local anaesthesia with minimal discomfort and swift healing. Modern surgery doesn't necessarily require permanent spectacle use. Healthcare professionals said that advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs), including extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) lenses, provided excellent vision at various distances while reducing spectacle dependency. Addressing the outdated beliefs is essential for encouraging timely treatment, they said. Warner Bros. Discovery splits: Cable, streaming services to be divided; decision to be finalised by 2026
Warner Bros. Discovery, the powerhouse behind HBO, CNN, and a vast entertainment empire, has announced splitting into two separate public companies by mid-2025, carving a clear divide between its traditional cable networks and its streaming and studio divisions. The restructuring will create two distinct entities: Streaming & Studios and Global Networks. The Streaming & Studios will house Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, and their extensive film and television libraries. Global Networks will comprise CNN, TNT Sports in the US, Discovery Channel, a range of major free-to-air European broadcasters, and digital brands such as Discovery+ and Bleacher Report. Following the announcement on Monday, shares of Warner Bros. Discovery surged more than 9% in pre-market trading. Warner Bros. chief executive David Zaslav will be leading the Streaming & Studios company, while the firm's current chief financial officer, Gunnar Wiedenfels, will take the reins at Global Networks. Both officials will continue in their present roles until the split is finalised.
