Shark Chases Surfers to Beach After Attacking Teen (Video)

On Sunday afternoon, a 16-year-old boy was attacked by a shark while surfing Cabarita Beach in New South Wales, Australia. The boy was bitten on his right side – leg and arm – and was flown to the hospital in critical condition due to his injuries. Fellow surfers and beachgoers can be seen in footage helping the young man, carrying him up the beach, and tying a tourniquet to quell the bleeding before emergency crews arrived. "I'm not sure whether he was with any other friends at the time of the incident, but by the time our lifeguards got there he had already had a tourniquet applied to those impacted limbs," NSW Surf Lifesaving CEO Stephen Pearce told the ABC. It's unclear what kind of shark was involved in the attack; however, some have suspected a great white. Following the attack, jet skis were used to clear the water. And a helicopter was used to survey the water, searching for the shark, but they didn't find anything. This time of year, according to Pearce, whales are migrating up and down the coast, and that can lead to increased shark activity. And even after the attack, when the victim and the fellow surfers were fleeing the water, footage shows the shark coming close into shallow water, perhaps even chasing them for another bite. See the footage of that above. Local surf report Instagram account, Nicka35, wrote: 'Unbelievable footage shows the 2 metre plus shark chasing the victim and his rescuers all the way to the shoreline today at Cabarita Headland. Huge effort but the guys to not only save this kid but put their own lives on the line in the process.'However, attacks like are still relatively rare in this region. Pearce added: "Cabarita Beach is a beautiful, picturesque beach and unfortunately I think it might be a case of 'wrong time, wrong place' at this stage for the young fella.'Shark Chases Surfers to Beach After Attacking Teen (Video) first appeared on Surfer on Jun 29, 2025

Chilling vid shows shark chase boy, 16, as he was hauled out of water with ‘arm left hanging off by sinew' after attack

THIS is the unbelievable moment a shark chased a teen as he was hauled out of the water following an attack that left his arm hanging off by sinew. Emergency services were called to reports of the attack at Cabarita Beach on New South Wales' north coast, Australia just before 4pm on Sunday. 6 6 6 The nearly seven-foot beast - suspected to be a bull shark - mauled the right side of the 16-year-old's body, causing severe injuries to his leg, hand and arm, reports say. Jaw-dropping footage showed fellow surfers and swimmers rushing to help the teen while the shark lurked closely behind him - visible only by its gargantuan fin. Screams could be heard in the background as a brave person punched the shark while others scrambled to safety. But rescuers continued to be stalked by the creature as they carried the injured boy to safety. One shocked onlooker exclaimed in the clip: "Oh my God, that's the shark." And another said: "Oh f***! That's really scary!" Thankfully an off-duty paramedic was at the scene and helped the teen using a tourniquet to help stop the excessive bleeding. One of the heroes who raced to help the boy after hearing his deafening screams was Brazilian Thiago Collel. Recalling the horror incident, he explained how the boy sustained injuries that left one of his arms hanging off by a thread of sinew. The 39-year-old told Daily Mail:"When I got to the shore, he had been dragged in by a group of people including an off-duty paramedic who happened to be walking on the beach at the time. "He lost a scary amount of blood. I was covered in it." The group then carried the boy out to safety on a surfboard they used as a makeshift stretcher. Collel said he and several others "were just trying to keep him calm, holding his head and making sure he was okay". He added: "I just kept talking to him and he told me how he fought off the shark by kicking and punching it away." The boy was then airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. He remains here in serious but stable condition, the news site added. A second chopper was deployed to track down the shark after the horror incident, but to no avail. The species of shark currently remains unknown, but locals believe it was a bull shark. Some even fear it could be a two-metre great white. 6 6 6

EXCLUSIVE Gruesome new details emerge of the horrific injuries teenage boy suffered in a terrifying shark attack - as hero rescuer reveals how young surfer was savaged as he tried to fight it off

One of the heroes who raced to the aid of a teenage boy savagely mauled in a shark attack has revealed the horrific scene they found as they pulled him from the surf. The 16-year-old had his arm almost ripped off by the two-metre shark as he surfed at Cabarita Beach on the NSW far north coast near Byron Bay on Sunday afternoon. Brazilian Thiago Collel has revealed how he raced down to the shoreline to help after he heard the youngster's screams when the suspected bull shark attacked. But as rescuers tried to pull him to safety, the shark followed the injured teenager into the shallows to continue its attack until one rescuer punched it and it finally swam off. Mr Collel, who had been watching a seal in the water nearby, revealed the shocking extent of the boy's gruesome injuries that left his arm dangling by a thread of sinew. 'When I got to the shore, he had been dragged in by a group of people including an off-duty paramedic who happened to be walking on the beach at the time,' he said. 'His bicep was destroyed - you could see all the muscle, flesh and bone,' he said. 'He lost a scary amount of blood. I was covered in it.' Mr Collel, 39, said they took the teenager to a nearby car park where the off-duty paramedic applied a tourniquet to stem the bleeding and saved the teen's life. The volunteer surf lifesaver at nearby Rainbow Bay said his training immediately kicked in during the life-threatening emergency. 'We were just trying to keep him calm, holding his head and making sure he was okay,' he added. 'I just kept talking to him and he told me how he fought off the shark by kicking and punching it away. 'It was full-on but wasn't so scary because I think I knew what to do and was so focused on making sure he was stable.' The boy suffered injuries to his right upper arm, wrist and right leg, with rescuers stalked by the creature as they tried to carry him out of the water. A video of the moments after the attack shows another brave rescuer racing into the water and punching the shark as other beachgoers fled. 'Oh my God, that's the shark,' a shocked onlooker was filmed screaming in the clip. A female added: 'Oh f***. That's really scary!' A surfboard was used as a makeshift stretcher to carry the teen to safety. The teen was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. Mr Collel, who has lived in Australia for several years, said he hoped to be reunited with the shark survivor once he is in a stable condition. 'I would like to go visit him in hospital in the coming days,' he added. 'He should be proud of how calm and strong he remained throughout it all - he was covered in lacerations to his arms and legs.' NSW paramedic Ben Mumford praised the brave bystanders who rushed to the boy's aid. 'There were a few brave people in the water that helped him out of the water,' Mr Mumford said. 'There was also a couple of off-duty paramedics on the scene that assisted him until we arrived.' A second helicopter was deployed to locate the shark, but the aerial search was unsuccessful. The species of shark involved remains unknown, but locals believe it was a bull shark, although some feared it was a two-metre great white. NSW Shark Smart had tagged and released a tiger shark at the same beach three days earlier. Yesterday's incident has rattled locals, who have been urged to stay out of the water. Cabarita Beach will remain closed for 24 hours. In 2020, locals were 'traumatised' after a surfer was forced to boot a 'four-metre shark' as it took a bite from his board off the Tweed Coast. Terrified witnesses saw 'hardcore splashing' as up to 30 surfers raced out of the water after the man tried to flee as the shark left what appeared to be a tooth embedded in his foilboard off Cabarita's Headland.

Lifesaver says victim kicked shark during attack at Cabarita

A volunteer surf lifesaver who helped treat a teenager attacked by a shark on the NSW far north coast says the boy managed to kick the shark as he was being dragged from the water. The 16-year-old is recovering in a Gold Coast hospital with wounds to his right arm and leg after he was bitten a number of times while swimming off Norries Headland at Cabarita Beach on Sunday afternoon. A video circulating on social media appears to show a shark fin emerging just metres away from where the boy is being dragged from the water. The ABC has so far been unable to contact the original creator of the content. Thiago Collela, a volunteer surf lifesaver with the Rainbow Bay Surf Club, said he was on the headland filming a seal in the water when he heard someone screaming for help. "I ran down to the beach as fast as I could and saw other surfers carrying the injured boy on a surfboard to nearby grassland where a female paramedic was waiting," he said. Mr Collela said he held the injured boy to distract him from the large cut on his arm while the paramedic treated his wounds. He said the teen was brave and remarkably calm. "I was holding his head while talking to him as she was putting a tourniquet on his wound," Mr Collela said. "He was talking to us and he was not complaining about pain or anything like that. "He even said, 'Oh I think I kicked the shark twice' and I said to him, 'Good job'." A surfer who was in the water during the attack said he saw a two-metre bull shark in the area, but initially thought it was a dolphin. Bohdi McDonald, 16, was about 30 metres away from where the attacked happened. "I saw the shark thrashing about in shallow water as people tried to drag the injured boy to shore," he said. "It looked like the shark was trying to bite him again." The keen boardrider said he surfed at the beach every day, and was surprised by the attack. "It's obviously very frightening, but give it a few days' rest and I'll be back out," he said. Tweed Shire councillor and surf club patroller, James Owen, said the attack could be linked to an injured seal reportedly seen swimming in the area. Mr Owen said shark attacks could happen at any time, but the seal may have been a contributing factor. "It could have certainly excited the shark and if there was a lot of activity in the water, as we know, people can potentially be identified as food sources," he said. Councillor Owen said shark attacks affected the community, and it would take time for people to return to the water, as it did with the fatal shark attack at Salt Beach, south of Kingscliff, in 2020. "Understandably, people are nervous at the moment but they will slowly return to the ocean," he said. A spokesperson for Gold Coast Health said the teenager remained in a serious condition.
