2025 CFB Predictions, Picks: Back Penn State To Surpass Win Total
The college football season will be here before you know it. I usually dive into the deep end of the pigskin pool immediately after the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals are finito, so here we are. There aren't many moves I'm ready to make for Week 1 yet — I do love Over 54.5 total points in the Miami-Notre Dame — but I've done a good amount of work on regular season win totals and the power conference betting markets. Here are three future bets I like right now. Clemson to win ACC There aren't many higher on the Tigers than me. I'm far from a "Clemson guy," but Dabo Swinney's offense is loaded with skill and speed, and the Tigers have a first-round quarterback in Cade Klubnik. Sure, it's a younger group of skill position guys, but the talent is serious. And you already know there are four or five NFL players on defense. The ACC should be a two-horse race between Clemson and Miami, another team that's got gobs and gobs of talent. I currently have Clemson 4.5 points better on a neutral and that number might grow during the season. You'll have a nice middle shot if the Tigers are better than the market believes, and they are touchdown favorites or so in the ACC title game. PICK: Clemson (+120) to win ACC Penn State Over 10.5 wins A few people that I respect believe this is the most complete team James Franklin has ever had in Happy Valley. Obviously, that phrase gets overused in sports, but it's pretty difficult to disagree in this specific situation. The defense could be better than last year's and Penn State added a couple of legit receivers from the portal to go along with its returning quarterback Drew Allar, top two running backs and offensive coordinator. Stability is not an issue. One bettor flashed me a $5,000 ticket on Penn State to win the whole enchilada at 9/1. It'll pay $45,000 if it comes home. I certainly respect the play but just can't get there. My issue is that Franklin seems to find a way to flub a major decision in the biggest games. It's cruel, but fair. I'm pumping the brakes on a Big Ten title or national championship, believing it's a better bet to back the Nittany Lions to reach 11 wins. PICK: Penn State (+120) Over 10.5 wins Notre Dame Under 10.5 wins My "Bet Sweats" co-host Joe Ostrowski and I bet Notre Dame to win the national title at 10-1 a week before the College Football Playoff. We rode the wave over Indiana, Georgia and Penn State only to see the Irish get shoved against Ohio State in the championship game. Right size, wrong shape. The Irish are likely handing the keys on offense to freshman quarterback CJ Carr, a kid who is decidedly less experienced than transfers Sam Hartman and Riley Leonard were the last two seasons. And if Carr doesn't win the job, sophomore Kenny Minchey doesn't have much seasoning either. Notre Dame will run the ball a ton and their defense will carry the load for most games, but I can't ignore the quarterback youth or the schedule. And games against Miami, Texas A&M, Arkansas and USC are no walks in the park. PICK: Notre Dame (-140) Under 10.5 wins Sam Panayotovich is a sports betting analyst for FOX Sports and the BetMGM Network. He previously worked for WGN Radio, NBC Sports and VSiN. ACC Star QB Tabs Ty Simpson as one of the 'Best' QBs in College Football
ACC Star QB Tabs Ty Simpson as one of the 'Best' QBs in College Football originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For just the second time since 2021, the Alabama Crimson Tide will have a changing of the guard at the quarterback position. Advertisement Following a two-year run with dual-threat passer Jalen Milroe under center, Alabama will turn to one of Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, or Keelon Russell. The leader in the clubhouse remains Simpson, the former five-star recruit in the 2022 class. Although some have reservations about Simpson's ability to play in the SEC following just 50 pass attempts in three years, one top college signal-caller believes he can push the team to a College Football Playoff bid. Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson (15).© Will McLelland-Imagn Images "Guys like Arch (Manning), Garrett Nussmeier, Drew Allar, and Ty Simpson... The guys that believe in the program and believe in the culture that they're at... There's a reason that those are four of best quarterbacks in college football right now," said Clemson Tigers star quarterback and Heisman Trophy Award hopeful Cade Klubnik per Touchdown Alabama on Twitter. Advertisement Klubnik included Simpson in a quartet of passers that have stacked accolades during their time in college. Allar led the Penn State Nittany Lions to a College Football Playoff win in 2024, while Manning threw nine touchdowns against just two picks in relief of an injured Quinn Ewers for a 13-3 Texas Longhorns squad. As for Simpson, he went 14-of-25 for 167 yards. He also ran for 44 yards and a score. Although inexperienced, Simpson enters the season as a former top high school recruit who won the backup quarterback job behind Milroe last season. Top Steelers NFL draft prospect LaNorris Sellers passes up huge NIL deal
The top priority of the Pittsburgh Steelers scouting staff this college football season is to sort out what is already shaping up to be an elite quarterback class for the 2026 NFL draft. Thanks to the ridiculous nature of NIL money, the NFL now has another aspect of players to track and that's their loyalty to their team as opposed to making fast money in college football. One of the top quarterback prospects in the upcoming draft is LaNorris Sellers out of South Carolina. News came out about Sellers this week and thanks to some intervention by his dad, Sellers chose to pass up $8 million over two years in NIL money to stay. According to Sellers' dad, there were multiple schools bidding for his services, but he showed maturity and loyalty by staying, which is a huge green flag for an NFL team. Advertisement From a football standpoint, Sellers is poised for a huge breakout season. His athleticism and mobility are already off the charts and as the season progressed, we saw his pocket presence and processing speed improve drastically down the stretch. Sellers and Clemson's Cade Klubnik are my top two options for the Steelers and this move by Sellers just helps his case. 2026 NFL draft highlight: Cade Klubnik, Jeremiyah Love and the best names to know by position
NFL (via Getty Images) Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love lead the list of early 2026 NFL draft projections, with experts pointing out position-by-position stars consisting of the cream of the crop at wide receiver, offensive tackle, and edge rusher. Ten months away from the draft, early assessments provide an initial look at the players making some noise, as well as those going under the radar or mired in uncertainty brought about by injury or inconsistency. Cade Klubnik leads quarterbacks in early 2026 NFL draft expectations Clemson Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik sits atop both Matt Miller's and Jordan Reid's early QB lists, positioning himself as the leader after showing maturity and composure in big spots last year. Experts agree that Klubnik enters the season as the most NFL-ready under-center prospect, although competition is fierce. Behind Cade Klubnik, Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), Fernando Mendoza (Indiana), and LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina) are vying for upper-tier status. Penn State's Drew Allar is still a divisive prospect; his phenomenal size and arm talent are on display, but his decision-making inconsistency renders him a red-flag pick. In Miller's words, Allar might go from QB1 to a Day 3 dart based on his play in 2025 Why Cade Klubnik is the No. 1 QB in 2025 😤 Jeremiyah Love leads a rich and varied running back class At running back, Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love gets early top-drawer billing for his mix of balance, speed, and vision. He is ranked second by Miller behind Texas's CJ Baxter and Oregon's Makhi Hughes. Reid's top five includes Nicholas Singleton (Penn State) and Demond Claiborne (Wake Forest). CJ Baxter's ranking comes with a warning sign—he comes off an ACL tear and will split the backfield with Quintrevion Wisner. Wisner's 1,000-yard season puts pressure on Baxter to rebound as an upper-tier rusher. Jaydn Ott, who moved to Oklahoma after a season derailed by injuries at Cal, is a bounce-back candidate to watch. Wide receiver class features Ja'Kobi Lane and Antonio Williams as early risers USC's Ja'Kobi Lane and Clemson's Antonio Williams head a talented but untested wide receiver class. Lane heads Reid's list, though Miller prefers Williams, with Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson and Georgia Tech's Eric Singleton Jr. closely behind. Lane, though big-bodied and productive in the red zone (12 TDs), requires more consistent yardage production to seal WR1 status. Elijah Sarratt of Indiana is emerging as a dark horse, especially after quarterback Fernando Mendoza transferred in. Sarratt's 987 yards last season hint at serious upside, particularly in contested catch scenarios. Key names dominate offensive line and defensive front rankings On the line, Francis Mauigoa of Miami and Spencer Fano of Utah anchor the offensive tackle rankings, showcasing immense upside in both pass protection and run blocking. Alabama's Kadyn Proctor remains a physical marvel but lacks consistent execution, a trait scouts will scrutinize in 2025. Defensively, T.J. Parker of Clemson and Rueben Bain Jr. of Miami lead the class of edge rushers. Peter Woods of Clemson is atop interior defensive linemen, followed closely by Tim Keenan III of Alabama and Penn State's Zane Durant. Caleb Banks of Florida is a name to keep in mind after he closed out last season strong. Safety and cornerback classes driven by up-and-coming stars and return from injury Caleb Downs of Ohio State and Kamari Ramsey of USC headline a strong safety contingent, with Oregon's Dillon Thieneman not much further behind. At cornerback, Tennessee's Jermod McCoy impressed observers with four interceptions, but a torn ACL obscures his 2025 prospects. Southern Miss's Josh Moten, who previously played at Texas A&M and Marshall, has come on as a possible breakout player because of his elite ball skills, but with reservations regarding his size. Also read: Shedeur Sanders shocks everyone at Browns camp after being ignored in NFL Draft It's still early in the cycle, but there are already multiple players angling to become first-rounders and others with make-or-break seasons approaching. Cade Klubnik, Jeremiyah Love, and Peter Woods have certainly raised the bar, though, as the 2026 NFL draft class is still wide open, with depth at almost every position. How Clemson football stacks up vs returning QBs from LaNorris Sellers to Garrett Nussmeier
CLEMSON — Clemson football isn't the only team returning an experienced quarterback with NFL draft aspirations. Most of the Tigers' 2025 opponents will have new starting quarterbacks like Syracuse, Boston College, North Carolina, Florida State and Louisville. All lost their 2024 starter because of the transfer portal or expiring eligibility. Advertisement Still, Clemson has four critical games against potential College Football Playoff teams that are returning their starting quarterbacks: LSU, Georgia Tech, SMU and South Carolina. These four games could make or break Clemson's season. While Cade Klubnik prepares for his final season with Clemson, let's look at how these four of quarterbacks stack up entering the 2025 season. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU eye statement win in season opener vs Clemson This game on Aug. 30 (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC) will be a rematch of the 2020 national championship game, which LSU won 42-25 behind quarterback Joe Burrow throwing for 463 yards for five touchdowns. Advertisement Garrett Nussmeier, who was fifth in passing yards (4,052) and tied for 10th in passing touchdowns (29) last season, opted to return for his senior year in hopes of taking a leap in his second full season as a starter like former LSU quarterbacks Burrow and Jayden Daniels did. Nussmeier is a true pocket passer who lacks mobility but possesses a powerful arm with a strong supporting cast around him. He has the second-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy, behind Texas' Arch Manning and just ahead of Klubnik, who is third, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. They could be first-round selections in the NFL draft next year. LSU has missed the CFP for five straight seasons, and it has not won a season-opening game since 2019. It eyes a win against Clemson at Memorial Stadium in one of the marquee games of Week 1 to set up its path back to the CFP. Haynes King, Georgia Tech hope to make tremendous leap in 2025 Like Klubnik, Haynes King enters his third full season as a starter for Georgia Tech. King threw 14 touchdowns last year, 13 less than 2023, but he cut his interceptions from a conference-leading 16 to two, and his sacks dwindled from 15 to six. Advertisement The dual-threat quarterback improved his competition percentage to 72.9% and led ACC quarterbacks in rushing touchdowns with 11 despite missing two games with a shoulder injury. The Yellow Jackets had a 7-4 record, losing three one-possession games, when King played and can build on that in coach Brent Key's third season. Georgia Tech begins the season away against Colorado, which loses Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, then hosts Gardner-Webb, an FCS program. It can enter its first conference home game against Clemson on Sept. 13 (noon ET, ABC or ESPN) undefeated with King feeling confident, and Georgia Tech looking to send a message to the ACC. MORE: House settlement approves revenue sharing. Here's how Clemson will pay players Kevin Jennings, SMU looking for revenge in second season in ACC Kevin Jennings returns to SMU for his first full season as a starter hoping to build on his impactful 2024. He helped the Mustangs to an 11-3 record, which earned them their first ACC championship and CFP appearances. Advertisement Jennings replaced Preston Stone as the team's starter after SMU's Week 2 loss to BYU. He threw for 3,245 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and rushed for 354 yards and five touchdowns as a third-year player. The dual-threat quarterback faced Clemson last year in the ACC championship, throwing for 304 yards and scoring four touchdowns. He also battled Tigers new defensive coordinator Tom Allen's defense when he was with Penn State in the CFP, and the Nittany Lions shut down Jennings. He had his worst game of the season, throwing for 195 yards for one touchdown and three interceptions. Jennings will be without SMU's top running back, Brashard Smith, and its most productive pass catcher, Roderick Daniels Jr., as both players' eligibility expired. Offensive coordinator Casey Woods remained with SMU, so Jennings will have familiarity with the scheme but will have to get acclimated to new contributors before facing Clemson on Oct. 18 at Memorial Stadium. Can Clemson stop South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers? It didn't last season Clemson could not slow down LaNorris Sellers, who rushed for 166 yards for two touchdowns last year, including a go-ahead 20-yard score with 1:08 left. It sacked him three times, but he forced 18 missed tackles, the most Pro Football Focus has ever recorded for a quarterback since it started tracking college players in 2014. Advertisement Sellers, 6-foot-3 and 242 pounds, is an elusive player whose strong frame allows him to withstand potential tackles and turn them into game-breaking plays. In his first full season as a starter, he threw for 2,534 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions and rushed for 674 yards and seven touchdowns. Sellers helped South Carolina to a 9-4 record, its best finish under coach Shane Beamer and most wins since 2017. The dual-threat quarterback returns for his third season with the seventh-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy. If Sellers improves his passing, not only could he improve his NFL draft stock but he can help the Gamecocks beat Clemson on Nov. 29 (noon ET, ABC or ESPN) for the second straight time in the Palmetto Bowl for the first time since 2012 and 2013.
