Buccaneers' Tight End Missing From Elite List
Buccaneers' Tight End Missing From Elite List originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While some Tampa Bay Buccaneers players are finally starting to garner some national attention, others are not. This offseason, we've seen the likes of Mike Evans, Bucky Irving, Tristan Wirfs, Baker Mayfield, Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jamel Dean honored on "best of" lists representing Tampa Bay. Advertisement But as we peruse ESPN's top 10 tight ends in the NFL ahead of the 2025 season, there's no Bucs player to be found - no Cade Otton. Is that deserved? Maybe. Otton is good. He's good for the Bucs. But is he elite? Certainly an argument could be made that he's not. Especially with his history of drops. Otton was a fourth-round pick by the Bucs in 2022 out of then-Pac-12 powerhouse Washington. He had an impressive rookie campaign with 391 yards and two touchdowns, but suffered from drops. He posted just 42 catches on 65 targets with five drops, leading all tight ends. The next season wasn't much better, with three drops on 67 targets, and he got worse last season. In 2024, Otton posted 59 catches on 87 targets with 600 yards and four touchdowns but eight drops. Advertisement If Otton can clean up his pass catching, he'd be a far more effective offensive tool for Mayfield and the Bucs. In ProFootballFocus' rankings earlier this season, Otton was No. 20 overall, which actually sounds a little high, honestly. "Otton's Achilles' heel is drops. He has the third most (11) at the position across the past two years. His 63.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024 was a career high and also marks the first time he generated more than 1 yard per route run (1.31). If he can hang on to the ball (also three fumbles the past two years), Otton has the skills to rise on this list." WATCH: Every target for Jacksonville Jaguar's TE Brenton Strange in 2024
Take a look below at every one of the targets that Jacksonville Jaguars' tight end Brenton Strange had during the 2024 season. Strange assumed a much larger role in 2024 compared to his rookie year in 2023. When it was all said and done, Strange was targeted 54 times, catching 40 of those passes for 411 yards with two touchdowns. Advertisement Of note, Strange ranked 17th out of 45 eligible tight ends in yards per route run, an efficiency metric from Pro Football Focus. The Jaguars' organization is extremely bullish on Strange this season, who now sits atop the team's tight end depth chart. That in itself will lead to more opportunities, but within Liam Coen's offense, the tight end is a key part of the passing game. Last season, with Coen calling the plays in Tampa Bay, Bucs' tight end Cade Otton finished the year with 84 targets, which was the ninth-most among all tight ends in the NFL. Along with Strange's ability to impact the game as a pass-catcher, he's also versatile, able to line up across the formation, and he's a capable run-blocker as well. When a tight end can fill a variety of roles, it adds a level of unpredictability to an offense. Cade Otton Turning Heads During Buccaneers' Workouts
Cade Otton Turning Heads During Buccaneers' Workouts originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cade Otton may not be considered one of the best tight ends in football yet, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter has quickly become underrated around the league. Advertisement The 26-year-old has seen increases in both receptions and yards each year he has been in the league. The former fourth-round pick has quickly become a consistent receiving option for Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay's offense. Otton is already turning heads in Buccaneer offseason workouts in an important fourth season. More importantly, he's making things hard for some of his defensive teammates. "Cade, I am kind of sick of him right now," laughed inside linebacker Anthony Walker Jr on the team's website. "That is a real savvy route runner right there. Yeah, he got me a few times this offseason. So, I definitely have to get in my bag a little bit." Advertisement Star receivers like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin have gotten plenty of praise for their impact on Tampa Bay's passing offense. In many ways, Otton gets overlooked in the Buccaneers' offense. More importantly, he has also found a way to gain the respect of his quarterback in Mayfield. In his short career, Otton has played with Tom Brady and Mayfield. Even some of the better tight ends in history would beg for a chance like that. As he continues to develop his game, Otton has quickly gone from an afterthought to one of the key pieces in Tampa Bay's offense. He's in line for another career year at this point. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tight End Cade Otton Ranked Poorly Among NFL's Best
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tight End Cade Otton Ranked Poorly Among NFL's Best originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don't often get national love, regardless of being one of the most consistent teams over the past five seasons. Advertisement With stars on the roster like Mike Evans, Vita Vea and Lavonte David, their names are hardly ever on the list of the top of their position groups outside of Tampa Bay. Why should this offseason be any different? Pro Football Focus released its tight end rankings ahead of the 2025 season, and while Cade Otton isn't ranked highly, it's for good reason. 20. Cade Otton, Tampa Bay Buccaneers "Otton's Achilles' heel is drops. He has the third most (11) at the position across the past two years. Bucs' Cade Otton not held in high regard by PFF in preseason rankings
Bucs' Cade Otton not held in high regard by PFF in preseason rankings The Bucs have struggled with the tight end position in recent years despite their best efforts to get a hit at it. Pro Football Focus looked at the position across the NFL and listed their top 32 tight ends, and the Bucs' very own Cade Otton did not earn a very favorable spot on the list. Otton, one of the many former Washington Huskies on the Tampa Bay roster, came in at the 20 spot. To explain his bottom-half ranking, John Kosko writes about the one thing holding him back from going higher in rankings. "Otton's Achilles' heel is drops. He has the third most (11) at the position across the past two years. His 63.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024 was a career high and also marks the first time he generated more than 1 yard per route run (1.31). If he can hang on to the ball (also three fumbles the past two years), Otton has the skills to rise on this list." Otton emerged as a favorite candidate for Baker Mayfield after Chris Godwin's injury in Week 8. He became the safety valve Godwin was for the Heisman Trophy winner, and as a result, expectations increased. Otton is the third-ranked tight end in the NFC South, according to the rankings behind Tayson Hill (15) and Kyle Pitts (19).
