First trophies of the GAA season in Sligo to be awarded this weekend
The Spring Leagues were introduced three years ago as the seasonal warm up competition for club sides and to provide more football; for club footballers generally.
The competitions have proven to be particularly valuable this year to enable club players to become familiar with the new rules in Gaelic Football.
In the Senior final, which will be played at Corran Park, Ballymote on Friday evening – 7.30 throw in, Enniscrone Kilglass, who are back in Division One of the Senior League after a long absence have come through to face Eastern Harps who made the step up to Division One in the previous year.
Both clubs are now reaping the rewards of a very healthy commitment to their underage sides over the past decade so a lively and skilful contest can be expected,
Both in particular have young and dynamic forward lines with two of Sligo's top sharp shooters in opposition - Caelan Hunt for the Harps and Gavin Duffy for the men from the west county.
Duffy will be well supported by his brother Brian and the wily Brian Coleman in the full forward line while Dermot Mullaney is a reliable midfield provider,
The Keash Gurteen side will be looking to Shane O'Grady, Sean Bruen and ace goal getter Ciaran Dorrian to support Hunt with Michael Clarke anchoring the midfield.
In the Junior final on Saturday, St Farnan's and Shamrock Gaels will come together at 7.30 at the Centre of Excellence in Scarden. The Farnan's have been struck by injury and retirements and find themselves back in Division Three having been in Division One as recently as 2023 so there will be keen to put something on the mantlepiece to create momentum for the season ahead. They come into Saturday's game on the back of a big win in their last regular league game at Eastern Harps.
This is a good Shamrock Geals side however that in addition to this final are also now joint top of the Division Three league table and with a good mix of experienced players which was competing in the Intermediate championship in recent years.
Two good games are promised. Admission will be by ticket, available online at Admission-Adults €10, Children U16 Free
