Cairn Oil & Gas powers Assam's tea industry with clean energy shift

Cairn Oil & Gas has been supplying clean natural gas from its Hazarigaon Gas unit in Assam to tea estates across Upper Assam. Producing more than 55 per cent of India's tea and nearly one-sixth of global supply, Assam's tea sector is the backbone of the state's economy. With over 650 million kilograms of tea produced annually, it supports the livelihoods of nearly three million people, from pluckers to packagers, and contributes significantly to India's GDP. As Assam's largest agri-based industry, tea is not just a symbol of heritage - it's a pillar of progress. Cairn Oil & Gas has been supplying clean natural gas from its Hazarigaon Gas unit in Assam, the first northeast block auctioned under the Discovered Small Fields (DSF) policy to be put to production, to tea estates across Upper Assam in collaboration with Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL) since 2023. The gas is supplied through a main trunk pipeline and a gas cascading system. This transition away from coal-based energy systems is reducing carbon emissions, lowering production costs, and enabling estates to invest in modern, climate-resilient practices . 'Assam's tea is one of India's proudest exports, and at Cairn, we see clean energy as a catalyst for strengthening this legacy,' said spokesperson, Cairn Oil & Gas. 'Our mission is to support the industry's evolution through affordable, reliable energy that fuels not just operations, but long-term sustainability.' Tea estate owners are already witnessing the benefits. With Cairn's natural gas supply , gardens are reporting up to 15–20 per cent savings in fuel costs, alongside a measurable decline in greenhouse emissions. The improved energy efficiency is also allowing producers to diversify into specialty teas, adopt drought-resistant plant varieties, and integrate water-saving irrigation systems - critical steps in the face of climate uncertainties. One such estate, Arin Tea Pvt. Ltd., has implemented drip irrigation across 30 per cent of its acreage, resulting in 15 per cent water savings without compromising yield. 'Cairn's support has enabled us to innovate while preserving Assam's tea legacy,' said Rakhi Saikia, Director of Arin Tea. 'We're responding to the climate crisis with practical changes - shade trees, efficient irrigation, and climate-adapted cultivation - and clean energy is central to this journey.' This forward-looking approach echoes the vision of Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal, who, speaking at Advantage Assam 2.0, in February lauded the state's natural abundance and highlighted the transformative potential of aligning its traditional strengths - like tea - with sustainable, technology-driven growth.

Cairn leads with cutting-edge technology to elevate domestic oil & gas output

New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): Cairn Oil & Gas, a subsidiary of the Vedanta Group and India's largest private oil and gas exploration and production company, is ramping up the deployment of advanced technologies and enhanced oil recovery techniques to boost domestic crude production. As part of its expansion strategy, the company is preparing to monetise its Shale reserves in Rajasthan and has launched the next phase of Alkali-Surfactant-Polymer (ASP) injection, targeting up to 300 million barrels of recoverable oil from mature fields. 'In Rajasthan, Cairn is preparing to monetise its Shale blocks, drawing on U.S. experience and partnering with Parker Wellbore (now part of Nabors Industries) to deploy a high-performance rig equipped with advanced automation and real-time monitoring,' the company said. Cairn is turning to sensors, seismic imaging, and generative AI to crack some of the country's toughest energy challenges, as per the company. It is deploying drone-based surveillance of digital twins and 4D seismic mapping to rejuvenate mature fields and tap unexplored reserves, as per the company. National Stock Exchange-listed Cairn Oil & Gas accounts for over a quarter of India's domestic crude oil production and aims to increase this contribution to 50 per cent. The company operates across India, holding interests in 62 blocks and producing from assets in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Assam. Hitesh Vaid, Chief Financial Officer, Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta Ltd, said that the company is actively strengthening its footprint across the country to bolster exploration and production. 'Over the next 3-5 years, we plan to invest approximately USD 3-4 billion. Our focus will be on expanding exploration in our offshore blocks, leveraging deepwater projects on the East Coast and shallow water campaigns on the West Coast,' Vaid said. Additionally, the company will be scaling up operations in its existing fields with growth projects like ASP injection and the development of unconventional techniques like Tight Oil, and Shale in Rajasthan by leveraging advanced & digital technologies to improve efficiency and productivity, he added. Describing the company's activity on adopting technologies in the exploration, Vaid further added, 'By adopting cutting-edge digital solutions - Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Augmented Learning (AL), and drone-based initiatives - through real-time data analytics, automation, and predictive maintenance systems, the company has successfully optimised its operations.' DRISHTI is a one-stop solution for Cairn's data-driven reservoir and production management system, which is used to augment reservoir performance, as per the company. According to the oil and gas major, implementation of predictive operational alarms has drastically reduced downtime of equipment, leading to a 25 per cent reduction in workflow development time, further accelerating delivery and maximising productivity. 'The implementation of Process Digital Twin technology has reduced gas flaring by 30 per cent and optimised fuel gas usage by 18 per cent, enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability,' Vaid said. India has a total of 26 sedimentary basins, stretching to approximately 3.36 million square kilometres. Of this, 2.4 million square kilometres lie in onshore and shallow water, while 1.32 million square kilometres are in deeper offshore water. Notably, more than 70 per cent of the region is still unexplored. Vaid said that unlocking the identified offshore hydrocarbon reserve holds the key to achieving India's vision for energy self-reliance. 'We are optimistic about the country's offshore potential and are focused on drilling on the East Coast in the Krishna Godavari basin,' he added. In OALP Round IX, Cairn secured 7 new blocks, 4 onshore and 3 offshore, across Cambay, Saurashtra, and Mumbai basins. These blocks are in proximity to our Cambay operations and will help us strengthen our drilling campaign on the West Coast. (ANI)

Cairn, EMGS partner for subsurface mapping in India's KG Basin

Cairn Oil & Gas has partnered with Electromagnetic Geoservices (EMGS) to perform a 3D Controlled Source Electro-magnetic (CSEM) survey in the deep-water Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin off India's east coast. CSEM is a geophysical approach used for subsurface models that improves the accuracy of hydrocarbon detection and reduces exploration risks. The survey, currently under way at the KGDWHP-2017/1 block using the Atlantic Guardian vessel, utilises EMGS' Deep Blue source system. Over the coming weeks, data acquisition will continue, with subsequent processing set to deliver more precise insights into the deep-water block's potential. By integrating the new CSEM data with recently reprocessed 3D seismic data, Cairn aims to better characterise and prioritise its offshore exploration prospects within the block. Cairn Oil & Gas chief exploration officer Sam Algar said: 'The acquired data will support definition of locations for exploration, appraisal and subsequent development, ensuring drilling decisions are based on the most accurate and comprehensive subsurface data. 'By leveraging the global expertise from EMGS and the latest advancements in CSEM technology, the KGDWHP-2017/1 block is poised for successful exploration and development, unlocking its hydrocarbon potential.' Cairn's KG basin assets span more than 4,500km² in water depths of between 500m and 2,500m. Drilling is due to commence in 2026 across a 3,600km² area that includes four gas discoveries and numerous prospects with multi-trillion cubic feet potential. Cairn Oil & Gas chief financial officer Hitesh Vaid said: 'Cairn has been at the forefront of technology adoption for efficient exploration and production in India's upstream sector. Through our partnership with EMGS, we will fast track development of the deep-water block in line with our vision to contribute 50% of India's oil and gas production.' Recently, Cairn formed an alliance with TechnipFMC to leverage the latter's engineering, procurement, construction and installation model to fast-track the development of subsea infrastructure for deep-water projects in India.
