More changes as Matildas aim to rebound from shock loss
Joe Montemurro has promised to ring in the changes yet again as his inexperienced Matildas attempt to bounce back to form in Tuesday night's rematch with Panama in Perth. Panama, ranked a lowly 56th in the world, produced one of their greatest wins on Saturday win beating the 15th-ranked Matildas 1-0 in Bunbury. Montemurro, in his first international window as Matildas coach, had made a whopping 10 changes to his starting line-up for that match, and introduced four debutants off the bench. It's all part of his wider plan to gain more insight into the depth in Australian women's football, and to see who can adapt to his possession-based game style. Montemurro's reign started with a 3-0 win and a 1-1 draw against Slovenia before the shock loss to Panama. King puts Panama on the board 🎯The visitors snag the lead in Bunbury, as Sherline King strikes home the opener🇦🇺 #AUSvPAN 🇵🇦 is live now on Paramount+ 📺 — Paramount+ Australia (@ParamountPlusAU) July 5, 2025 The Matildas have looked disjointed in all three games, but Montemurro is confident the short-term pain will lead to long-term gain. Australia entered the current international window without mainstays like Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler, Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, Katrina Gorry and Clare Wheeler. Ellie Carpenter, Mackenzie Arnold, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Sharn Freier exited the squad after the Slovenia series, while Amy Sayer and Charli Grant were rested for Saturday's loss to Panama. Sayer and Grant are expected to come in for Tuesday's game at HBF Park, but Alex Chidiac, Emily Gielnik and Kaitlyn Torpey have left to rejoin their respective clubs. In an added blow for the Matildas, goalkeeper Teagan Micah has been ruled out of the final match of the international window after suffering whiplash in making a save on Saturday. Montemurro doesn't view the shock 1-0 loss to Panama as a disaster, but says fans can expect more changes on Tuesday. "You don't lose, you learn," Montemurro said on Monday when asked about the surprise defeat. "It's a perfect opportunity to learn, because it's not a do-or-die game. It's not a game that we are going to lose points on or lose our status in a competition situation. "I haven't really looked at it as a loss. I looked at it as more information for us to go forward. "Obviously when you make a lot of changes like that, there is going to be a little bit of instability. "But I still have belief in the process, I still have belief in the way going forward, and we've got a bank of information that will help us going forward." Montemurro is looking for his players to display more football intelligence on Tuesday. And although the current window is more about information gathering and the implementation of a new game style, he wants to end it with a win. "We want to create the culture, we want to create the standards, we want to create an idea of football," Montemurro said. "And obviously there will be a wider, extended look at where we are, where we're going with the squad - but we want to do it while we're winning. "So a win is is important, like always."

Nine's goal to become home of soccer with English Premier League dream
Nine will consider a bid for the A-League broadcast rights as it inches closer to a deal to acquire all English Premier League matches for the next three years, alongside a suite of other assets from Optus Sport. The media giant is in the final stages of negotiations to secure the marquee rights to show all 380 matches in the English top tier, taking on the remaining three years of Optus' contract, alongside the FA Cup and Women's Super League, which is home to Matildas stars Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Mary Fowler. Nine, the owner of this masthead, is keen to complete a deal with Optus by the end of the month, according to sources with knowledge of the process, who spoke on condition of anonymity. A deal would also hand Nine six weeks to promote the EPL before the new season starts in August, while using the coming British & Irish Lions rugby Test tour of Australia to push subscriptions to Stan Sport. If successful in acquiring the rights, it is understood Nine would broadcast EPL games on its Stan Sport subscription service. It would be unlikely Nine would show any EPL games on free-to-air television. While initial talks last year couched a sale of the entire Optus Sport, it is understood Nine is seeking to acquire individual assets, which include the three English soccer competitions, but not some less valuable contracts, such as the J-League, Japan's domestic competition. Optus' current deal, worth $600 million across six years, has three years to run. Should Nine then seriously consider a bid to broadcast A-Leagues matches, it would bring Australia's top soccer competition alongside the EPL for the first time in a decade, from when both sets of rights were held locally by Fox Sports and televised on Foxtel. Paramount, which owns free-to-air Network Ten, has one year left on its five-year, $200 million deal to televise A-League games, which was signed in 2021. The Australian Professional Leagues (APL), which operates the men's and women's A-Leagues, in April opened talks for its next rights deal, which begins with the 2026-27 season. Paramount last year agreed to an extension to show Socceroos and Matildas matches until 2028. The US-owned network wants to extend its partnership with the domestic competition for two seasons to align the two deals, sources said.

Montemurro unveils new-look Matildas squad with big names to miss matches against Slovenia and Panama
Matildas coach Joe Montemurro has given Australia's next generation of football talent the nod as he plots a path to the 2026 Asian Cup. Montemurro has cast a wide net for his first Matildas team and named 14 A-League Women players in a 33-strong squad for games against Slovenia and Panama. Matildas captain Steph Catley, forward Caitlin Foord and midfielder Katrina Gorry will not feature in the four-game window, with the trio taking leave. Turning to the ALW is no surprise, given Montemurro's intimate knowledge of the domestic league. The former Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City coach says the four-game window in Western Australia will help the Matildas rediscover their identity. Australia's national women's team have slumped to their equal-worst position, down to No.16, after disastrous Olympics and SheBelieves Cup campaigns. 'When you have this amount of time, you can start to infiltrate some good ideas and make a statement in terms of the way we want to play,' Montemurro said. 'We still want to win football matches. We still want to show you who we are as a footballing nation. 'But more importantly, to really instil some identity, and really instil some belief in this team that you know going forward.' Reigning Julie Dolan Medallist Alex Chidiac and Victory striker Emily Gielnik return to the national team after being overlooked regularly by Tony Gustavsson and Tom Sermanni. Cortnee Vine remains on leave after Montemurro flagged reaching out to the North Carolina Courage winger. Vine, who shot to stardom when she scored the winning spot-kick in the Matildas' epic quarter-final penalty shootout at the Women's World Cup, hasn't played for the national team since the Paris Olympics. But Montemurro remains confident Vine will return to the Matildas at some point this year. 'She just feels that she needs a little bit more time to come back, and we respected that,' Montemurro said. 'From my perspective, she's definitely in sight after this camp and beyond.' Brisbane Roar midfielder Tameka Yallop remains sidelined with a leg injury, while recent debutant Kahli Johnson has been ruled out with a thigh injury. In their place, Montemurro has handed Roar forward Grace Kuilamu and Western United's Adriana Taranto their first call-up. They join five uncapped players who have been selected, while 16 players have fewer than 10 senior international appearances. Vice-captain Ellie Carpenter returns from personal leave, with Mackenzie Arnold, Hayley Raso and Sharn Freier returning from injury. Midfielder Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, yet to find a new home after her time at Portuguese club Sporting CP came to an end, also returns to the Matildas for the first time since June 2022. 'She's one of these talented players that, in one-on-one situations, is something a little bit special,' Montemurro said. 'It'd be great to just see where she's at.' The Matildas face Slovenia on June 26 and 29, then Panama on July 5 and 8, in Western Australia.
