Former Arizona guard Caleb Love inks two-way contract with Trail Blazers

Former Arizona guard Caleb Love signed a two-way contract with the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday, the team announced. Shams Charania of ESPN was the first to report the news. Love was an All-Big 12 first-team selection this past season as a fifth-year senior, averaging 17.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals on 34% shooting from 3-point range in 37 games. He registered 14 20-point games, tied for the fourth-most in the conference. The undrafted standout led the Wildcats to the conference championship game and a spot in the Sweet 16, averaging 21.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists on 46.5% shooting from 3-point range in six postseason games. He was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team. Love spent the first three years of his career at North Carolina before transferring to Arizona, beginning with the 2023-24 season. He became one of 14 players in history this season to record at least 1,000 points at two different Division I programs. The 23-year-old will split his time next season between the NBA and the Rip City Remix in the G League. He is eligible to be active for up to 50 games in the NBA and will earn $636,435, which is equal to 50% of the minimum salary applicable to a player with zero years of service. Love is expected to suit up with the Trail Blazers for at least five games in the NBA Summer League, beginning July 11 against the Golden State Warriors (11 p.m. EDT, ESPN2).

Former UNC basketball star expected to sign new NBA contract

Will this former UNC standout turn himself into an NBA starter? The 2020-2021 college basketball season was a mixed bag for the North Carolina Tar Heels. They returned to the NCAA Tournament for a 10th-consecutive season, a year after COVID-19 cancelled 2020's Big Dance, but were blown out (85-62) by Wisconsin. UNC welcomed one of its deepest, most-talented recruiting classes to Chapel Hill ahead of its 2020-2021 campaign, headlined by 5-stars Caleb Love and Walker Kessler. The greatest Tar Heel from that recruiting class ended up being RJ Davis, an all-time program great who ended up winning 2024 ACC Player of the Year Honors – and now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. One player not talked about enough from that 20'-21' roster: former 5-star recruit Day'Ron Sharpe, now a member of the Brooklyn Nets. Enter his fifth NBA season and with his rookie contract now expired, Sharpe is planning a return to Brooklyn, announcing his intention to sign a new deal on Monday afternoon. According to ESPN Senior Insider Shams Charania, Sharpe's deal will be worth two years and $12 million dollars. He'll stay with former Tar Heel Drake Powell, the latter of whom the Nets selected 22nd overall in last week's NBA Draft. Sharpe is largely a reserve, starting just 14 of his 191 NBA appearances for the Nets, but is watching his production increase each season. Sharpe averaged career highs of 7.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game during Brooklyn's 2024-2025 campaign, which included five double-doubles, highlighted by a 25-point, 15-rebound performance against the eventual NBA Champion Oklahoma City Thunder in February. Though Sharpe was a rare one-and-done at North Carolina, he made a name for himself as an offensive rebound machine, leading the country in offensive rebound percentage (.183) and the ACC in offensive rebounds per game (3.4). Sharpe finished second to Florida State's Scottie Barnes, now a member of the Toronto Raptors, in 2021 ACC Rookie and Sixth Man of the Year Voting. After averaging 18.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists and earning Pac-12 POY honors in 2023-24, Love earned a first-team All-Big 12 nod in 2024-25 with 17.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Caleb Love to Ryan Nembhard: Where are undrafted NBA free agent rookies heading to? Check post-draft updates

The 2025 NBA Draft has officially concluded, and now the undrafted free agency drama begins. To start off, ESPN cited sources to report that Arizona's Caleb Love, one of the top scorers in college basketball, is expected to sign a two-way NBA contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. Some other undrafted agents are expected to find their way into team rosters. Last year, Justin Edwards was on the Philadelphia 76ers. Ricky Council IV, Keon Ellis and Scotty Pippen Jr. were also undrafted agents. Teams like the Pacers, Heat, and Thunder have success with undrafted players, offering hope. Read More: Ace Bailey didn't want to go to Utah Jazz, but they 'drafted him anyway': Report What Is an Undrafted Free Agent? An undrafted free agent is a player eligible for the NBA Draft but not selected in its two rounds. Unlike drafted players, whose rights are held by the selecting team, UDFAs are free to negotiate and sign with any of the 30 NBA teams immediately after the draft concludes. Recognized as 'Non-Draft Rookies' in the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), these players face a challenging path to secure a roster spot, often requiring exceptional performance in tryouts or summer leagues. Players who declare for the draft and go unpicked become UDFAs as soon as the draft ends. Teams begin contacting agents immediately, often during the second round, to secure UDFAs. UDFAs can choose any team offering a contract, unlike restricted free agents (RFAs) whose original teams have matching rights. This flexibility allows players like Love, who signed with the Portland Trail Blazers, to select organizations that align with their development needs.
