West Midlands Police VR training helps fight crimes against women
Virtual reality technology is being used to train new police officers to provide an insight into male crimes against Midlands Police has said it is the first force in the UK to partner with training provider Calico, to deliver the interactive sessions to 700 new recruits by wear virtual reality headsets, which places them in the shoes of a woman travelling through Birmingham after force said the classes were part of a wider approach to address crimes such as stalking, harassment, rape and domestic abuse. The simulation allows officers to make decisions throughout, following four different routes through the city via park, taxi, and each scene, users hear the real voices and lived experiences of women, which helps them fully immerse themselves in the experience and understand the incident from the victim's point of Midlands Police said its male officers were benefiting the most from the project. PC Aaron Whittingslow said: "I've never experienced the world as a woman does. "The session has thrown me into that world through the virtual reality goggles and we've had some good discussions with female colleagues."It's really made me think about how I'd support victims, how my actions may be perceived and, as a new dad, the kind of world my daughter will grow up in."The force said while colleagues already completed a variety of training to ensure they were able to tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG), this scheme would better equip officers to protect victims. Assistant Chief Constable Jen Mattinson, force lead for VAWG said: "I'm proud to see West Midlands Police leading the way by providing training opportunities like this, in our committed approach to tackling violence against women and girls."This session is one of many tools that we are investing in as a force, to protect the communities we serve, and we will continually invest time, money and effort to combat VAWG." Tears at Cat Who Wants Friend 'So Badly' She's Resorted to Desperate Tactic

Footage of a cat going to extreme lengths to try and strike up a friendship with a fellow feline had animal lovers tearing up on TikTok. Canada-based Anna Moen shared footage to her TikTok page (@attaghoul) of her Calico's attempts at ingratiating herself with another cat. Unfortunately for her, the cat in question belongs to Moen's parents and happens to be rather old and rather bad tempered. That doesn't stop this Calico from trying her best to socialize though, even if it does require a rather elaborate workaround. In Moen's video, which was posted on April 6, her Calico can be seen lying on a dining table, in close proximity to her parents' cat who is sitting on one of the chairs. It's notable that the Calico is positioned ever so slightly out of reach of the older cat, should she lash out for any reason. Watching her cat's desperate attempts to engage with another feline was a heartbreaking experience for Moen. "Crying because my cat wants to be friends with my parents cat so badly but she's old and cranky so she just gets as close as possible instead," the video's text overlay reads. Moen wrote in the comments section accompanying the video that her Calico "has been laying near her [the older cat] for years but the older one only stays if she doesn't notice right away." Newsweek reached out to Moen via her TikTok @attaghoul for comment. Moen's Calico shouldn't take the frosty reception she's getting from her fellow feline to heart though. Research has shown that much of the way a cat behaves is down to hormones and the gut microbiome. In 2022, a study in the journal PLoS One revealed the role this plays in deciding whether a cat is capable of cohabitation or prefers a more solitary existence. Cats with lower testosterone and cortisol levels, for instance, were found to be more tolerant of other felines and even willing to share food. By contrast, cats with higher hormone levels interacted less while cats with higher testosterone were eager to escape the test area set up as part of the experiment. Moen's Calico can take further heart from the response the video of her attempts at socializing has gotten on TikTok. At the time of publication, the video of her efforts has been watched over 228,000 times, with users flocking to offer words of kindness in the comments section. One user wrote: "I have the exact same pair! Except my tuxedo is younger and the one following my calico around to her dismay." Another commented: "My Layla was the same.. she wouldn't let her sister near her.. theynever became sadly crossed over and now Luna has a brother Leek.. they love each other." A third added: "I have 3 cats because of this. The second just wanted a friend and my first was too old for that. So I got a third and now 2 & 3 are inseparable!" Though her Calico's efforts with this older cat may be in vain, the response to the video seems to have had the desired effect on her owner. "Time to get her a friend, I guess," Moen wrote alongside the video. This Calico won't be lonely for long.

The best part about meeting the unsung heroes of the shelter is that you just might fall in love with someone you never expected. This is exactly what shelter cat Polka Dot is wishing for! This sweet and loyal cat has been waiting over 780 days (that's over 2 years) for her 'purr-fect' adopter since being abandoned at a Chicago firehouse, but she's been overlooked time and time again. Sadly, the repeated rejection has caused her to begin shutting down, and her friends at NAWS in Makena, Illinois, know that she needs to get out of the shelter as soon as possible. That's why shelter volunteer Fran shared Polka Dot's story on her TikTok page, @frangrzesik, on April 2. Could Polka Dot be your new feline friend? What a beautiful cat! Polka Dot is perfectly named after her captivating black and white fur pattern, though maybe a name like 'Lovie' would showcase her sweet personality instead. No matter what her name is, the right cat adopter will look past their furry friends' names and looks when selecting their new Polka Dot has been overlooked due to her age and her dislike for being picked up, but this is hardly fair to her. There are an endless number of ways to show a cat love without their paws leaving the ground! Similarly, 8 years old is not all that old for a cat, but senior cats can also be just as jovial, loving, and entertaining. "She still has a long life and lots of love ahead of her," agreed a commenter and cat mom. "Adopting a 10-year-old Calico boy was the best decision I ever made." A male calico cat is extremely rare, so that sounds like it was simply meant to be! Polka Dot's forever person or family is meant to be, too, but they just haven't found her yet.
