Hollywood auction of "Indiana Jones" whip draws $575,000 after "Citizen Kane" Rosebud sled gets near-record $14.75 million

Beverly Hills, Calif. — A whip wielded by Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" that once belonged to Princess Diana has sold at auction for $525,000. Thursday's sale came a day after the Rosebud sled from "Citizen Kane" went for a staggering $14.75 million, making it one of the priciest props in movie history. They were part of the Summer Entertainment Auction being held all week by Heritage Auctions. Heritage says the overall take has made it the second-highest grossing entertainment auction of all time, and there's still a day to go. Yet to be up for bids are Macaulay Culkin's knit snow cap from "Home Alone," a Kurt Russell revolver from "Wyatt Earp," a pair of "Hattori Hanzo" prop swords from "Kill Bill Vol. 1" and a first edition set of Harry Potter novels signed by J.K. Rowling. The whip sold Thursday was used during the Holy Grail trials that Ford's character goes through at the climax of 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." Ford gave it to then-Prince Charles at the film's U.K. premiere. It was given as a gift to Princess Diana, who gave it to the current owner, who was not identified. The buyer also was not identified. "The bullwhip is the iconic symbol of an iconic character of cinema history, Indiana Jones, and has been a highlight of this auction," Joe Maddalena, Heritage's executive vice president, said in a statement to The Associated Press. The $525,000 price includes the "buyers premium" attached to all auction items for the house that sells it. Heritage said the nearly $15 million bid for the Rosebud sled put it second only to the $32.5 million that Judy Garland's ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" fetched in December. Neither of those buyers were identified either. The sled was sold by longtime owner Joe Dante, director of films including "Gremlins." "Rosebud" is the last word spoken by the title character in director Orson Welles' 1941 film "Citizen Kane," and the hunt for its meaning provides the film's plot. Many critics have regarded it as the best film ever made. Long thought lost, the sled is one of three of the prop known to have survived. Dante stumbled on it when he was filming on the former RKO Pictures lot in 1984. He wasn't a collector, but knew the value of the sled and quietly preserved it for decades, putting it as an Easter egg into four of his own films. Dante's friend and mentor Steven Spielberg paid $60,500 for another of the sleds in 1982, and anonymous buyer paid $233,000 for the third in 1996.

(Photo by Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP) Nintendo has confirmed that Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play the lead characters in an upcoming live-action film based on the smash hit video game series 'The Legend of Zelda.' In a post on Nintendo's official X account, video game designer and film producer Shigeru Miyamoto said he was 'pleased to announce' that Bragason would play Zelda and Ainsworth would play Link. 'I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen,' the post reads. 'The film is scheduled to be released in theatres on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience,' a follow-up post adds. English actress Bragason, 25, is best known for appearing in Disney+ series 'Renegade Nell' and BBC series 'Three Girls' and 'The Jetty.' Ainsworth, 16, is also English. He has appeared in TV series such as Netflix's 'The Haunting of Bly Manor' and the film 'Flora & Ulysses.' The classic 'Zelda' video game, first released by Nintendo in 1986, follows hero Link, who must defeat a pig-like monster named Ganon along his journey to rescue Zelda, the Princess of Hyrule, according to an official synopsis. The original game has been followed by at least 20 newer versions over almost four decades, the most recent being 'The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,' which was released last year. Miyamoto will co-produce the film along with Avi Arad, chairman of Arad Productions Inc., according to a statement from Nintendo announcing the project in November 2023. Arad is a veteran film producer who has worked on many successful comic book movie franchises, including the various 'Spider-Man' films, as well as the 'Iron Man' and 'X-Men' movies. Wes Ball, best known for his work on 2024 movie 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,' will direct the film, which will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., the statement added. Overture Orthopaedics Announces Full Commercial Launch of the OvertureTi Knee Resurfacing System® to Treat Early Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Defects

IRVINE, Calif., July 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Overture Orthopaedics, a privately held U.S.-based medical device company providing surgeons with innovative joint preservation solutions in sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery, announced the full U.S. commercial launch of its OvertureTi Knee Resurfacing System. The system is composed of femoral and tibial implants intended to be used in the partial replacement of the articular surfaces of the knee. These implants were designed with sizing options that allow the surgeon to replace only the diseased or damaged region of the joint while preserving healthy surrounding cartilage and meniscus. The procedure is referred to as Focalplasty®. "My career has been defined by osteochondral allografts. At some point, biology fails and no longer becomes a good option for a patient, but it's far too early for any kind of joint replacement," said Riley J. Williams III, MD, Chief of the Sports Medicine Institute at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. "Overture is bridging that gap between biologic options and joint replacement with an implant that resurfaces the joint, providing a durable, predictable, and lasting solution that adheres to the principles of joint preservation." The OvertureTi Knee Resurfacing System received 510(k) clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration in March 2023. To date, approximately 150 cases have been successfully completed in a limited market release that commenced in November 2023. With an ever-increasing active patient population, the number of cartilage restoration surgeries performed annually exceeds 300,000, notably growing each year. A 2021 study on chondral lesions of the knee in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery by Dekker et al., highlights current surgical and biological options for treatment of isolated cartilage defects continue to present significant challenges for patients and surgeons in terms of costs and complexity, including inconsistent healing, donor site morbidity, and degradation over time. According to a study by McCormick et al. that focused on trends in the surgical treatment of articular cartilage lesions in the United States, some procedures such as chondrocyte implantation reach costs as high as $83,073 due to multi-stage surgeries, laboratory processing, associated episode of care, and societal considerations. OvertureTi Knee Resurfacing System implants are designed specifically as an alternative when biological repair options are not viable for treating focal cartilage lesions. The implants' baseplates are 3D printed, porous titanium to promote osseointegration and solid fixation. Articulating surfaces for the femoral and tibial components are titanium nitride, and an overmolded Vitamin E treated, highly crosslinked polyethylene, respectively. They are a fraction of the cost of biological options. "Overture is taking the concept of joint replacement, which has decades of research behind it, using a metal implant that gets lightly cemented and fixed into place, stable at time zero, and incorporates quite easily. Then applying it to principles of joint preservation that we value in sports medicine. The concept is great because patients can get back to their active lifestyles quickly, they don't have any downtime when it comes to weight bearing and range of motion restrictions, and they can readily start physical therapy to strengthen and recover, at time zero. We are also preserving the soft tissues around the knee," said Kristofer J. Jones, MD, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at UCLA and Head Team Physician and Director of Orthopaedic Surgery for the Los Angeles Lakers. "We launched our limited market release to a select number of surgeons just over 18 months ago," shared James Young Kim, Overture's Chief Executive Officer. "The goal was to observe early patient outcomes, refine the surgical technique, and better understand patient selection. With a good number of cases under our belt and seeing how well our patients have been doing, we are ready for the full commercial release of the OvertureTi Knee Resurfacing System. We are excited to get the product in the hands of surgeons, so that they can better address knee pain and extend active lifestyles, ultimately raising the standard of care for patients." The OvertureTi Knee Resurfacing System is available for immediate use, with all instrumentation sterile-packed for streamlined, single-use efficiency in the operating room.
