Rodgers sets record straight on Celtic transfer policy

With the Parkhead club making signings like Shin Yamada, Callum Osmand and Hayato Inamura this summer, the perception from some has been that these are club signings brought in independently of the manager. But, while some players will be identified by the recruitment team, the manager insists they would never be signed without his say-so. Young players like that will be brought in to be developed, but also potentially contribute right away too. While others, like Benjamin Nygren, are brought in with the intention of being key players from the start. 'It's pretty straightforward," Rodgers insisted. "There will be players within our recruitment team that are not just for now but for the future. 'Clearly I will look at those players and assess, and see if those players can come in and play. Then there will be other players we specifically need. But it's still very much joined up. Read more: 'I suppose it's more around whether the players are for now or later. People know the model over a number of years. 'There are players who come in who are maybe not expected to hit the ground running, but some of them do. 'That's what I need to assess, those guys coming in. But I also need to win now, and we need to get those players in. Either way, I will be responsible for that. 'Club signings, with the greatest respect, I don't care where they come from. I just need good players in the building who can help us win today, tomorrow and the next week. 'I've always developed players in my career, so I respect that side of it, but also the need for the present." Addressing Osmand, Inamura and Yamada directly, he added: 'You look at the likes of Callum Osmand. He's a young, talented player, so is he ready now or does he need a loan. 'You don't know that until you assess that. He's still our signing. 'Inamura, for example, the idea was he's a talented player, but he's only been playing professional for a year. Read more: 'But he's a really gifted played who played mostly at centre half or left back, so we'll have a look at him. 'The idea was he's train and work, but would maybe need a loan. In actual fact he's come in and done really well. "Yamada is only in the door. He has the profile and attributes we really like but for me, there is still more work for us to do.' Celtic's transfer strategy coming under scrutiny isn't a new thing - it has happened window after window. Last summer, the main signings were Adam Idah, Auston Trusty and Arne Engels for a combined £25.5million. Questions have been raised over whether they have justified that. But the Northern Irishman has brushed those aside and insists the trio's contributions speak for themselves. 'There was a bit of focus around the players who came in last year and question marks around what they brought. 'For one, they didn't set the price. But, two, Celtic did as well as they've done for a decade and those guys really helped us.

Brendan Rodgers insists he's fully responsible for EVERY Celtic signing as he blasts idea club buys players without him

BRENDAN RODGERS insists he's fully responsible for every single signing Celtic make. The Hoops boss described new left-back Hayato Inamura as an "investment" of the club. 4 Brendan Rodgers insists the buck stops with him when it comes to new signings Credit: Willie Vass 4 Celtic unveiled their newest player, Shin Yamada, at the weekend Credit: Getty And he's still desperate for a new goalscorer despite the arrival of hitmen Callum Osmand and Shin Yamada. But Rodgers has shot down suggestions players have been targeted without his say-so. The Celtic boss said: 'It's pretty straightforward. 'There will be players within our recruitment team that are not just for now but for the future. 'Clearly I will look at those players and assess, and see if those players can come in and play. 'Then there will be other players we specifically need. 'But it's still very much joined up. 'I suppose it's more around whether the players are for now or later. 'People know the model over a number of years. 'There are players who come in who are maybe not expected to hit the ground running, but some of them do. Celtic star Daizen Maeda spotted doing press-ups in technical area after being subbed-off against Sporting Lisbon 'That's what I need to assess, those guys coming in. 'But I also need to win now, and we need to get those players in. 'Either way, I will be responsible for that. 'Club signings, with the greatest respect, I don't care where they come from. In actual fact he's come in and done really well. 'Yamada is only in the door. He has the profile and attributes we really like but for me, there is still more work for us to do.' Rodgers is still desperate for signings to strengthen his squad with Royal Antwerp winger Michel Ange Balikwisha high on his list. He added: 'For me, it's just about getting quality players and ones I can develop and who improve Celtic. 'There was a bit of focus around the players who came in last year and question marks around what they brought. 4 'For one, they didn't set the price. 'But, two, Celtic did as well as they've done for a decade and those guys really helped us. 'Auston Trusty was outstanding in the Champions League. Arne Engels, his running power, was really helpful for us, he's a young player who will get better. 'Adam Idah scored over 20 goals and still has improvements to make. It depends on perspective. 'I felt we needed physicality and power for the Champions League and that really helped us. 'Those players have still more to develop. 'Whether a player costs £250,000 or £12m, I'm not really concerned. 'I've seen and worked with players who have cost more but others who have cost less but are much better players. 'I'm not really fixated on, 'I need £10m, £15m or whatever' -I just need quality players. 'That is about opportunity and seeing the right players with the right value. 'The market is complicated, especially when you are trying to get of the level we would like. 'We all know we've lost goals and would live to replace it with quality. 'The market is not as easy as it may seem but I am very confident as a club we will bring in the right players." 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Teenage striker Callum Osmand has become Celtic's fourth signing of the summer transfer window after the 19-year-old joined the Scottish champions from Fulham. Osmand described the switch north as a 'massive move' and has penned a four-year deal with Celtic, deciding to turn down a new contract with the English Premier League outfit. It remains to be seen whether the Englishman will be used in the first team or the development squad but after the announcement of his transfer, Osmand explained what it means to him to join the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It feels unbelievable to be here and I am so happy to be here,' said Osmand. 'It is a big step for me and I am excited to get going. It's a massive move and I can't wait to step out at Celtic Park in front of all the fans. Celtic have completed the signing of Callum Osmand from Fulham Athletic. | SNS Group 'When I spoke to the manager, he was really positive. The plan and pathway he has set out for the club is top, so it's exciting with the pathway he has for me. He has set out what he wants from me and it is all really positive, so I can't wait to get going now.' Osmand revealed that he took counsel from former Fulham and Celtic player Matt O'Riley on leaving English football. 'I've also spoken to Matt O'Riley on the phone, so he has given me advice,' he continued. 'He was telling me about how big the club is, how amazing the fans are and it's a new life really. So excited is definitely the word for me.' Osmand is the latest arrival at Parkhead following the signings of Kieran Tierney, Ross Doohan and Benjamin Nygren, with the deal subject to international clearance. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Osmand a 'highly-rated young striker' 'We are really pleased to bring Callum to Celtic,' said manager Brendan Rodgers. 'He is a highly-rated, talented young player. He has some real attributes. He's a quick and powerful striker and I'm really looking forward to working with him. I'm sure he can be really successful with us.' Osmand will compete for a place in Celtic's forward line as a No 9 with Daizen Maeda, Adam Idah and Johnny Kenny, who were all at the club last season. Celtic remain very active in the transfer window, with a deal for left-sided Japanese defender Hayato Inamura now very close. The 23-year-old has been granted permission by his J-League club Abirex Niigata to join the Glasgow side after a fee was agreed between the two parties. Callum Osmand pens his four-year deal at Celtic. | SNS Group Inamura, who only joined Abirex last year, took to social media to explain his departure from the relegation-threatened side. First of all, I am sorry for making this decision when the team is in a difficult situation. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the supporters for the love they have shown me over the past two years. 'When I heard my name being chanted at the opening game of this season, I felt a great sense of responsibility and awareness. I wanted to make this team win, and I wanted to make all the supporters smile every week. This feeling was my driving force. 'The atmosphere at the club is one of a big family. That is why I wanted to convey my passion for football and my feelings for the team on the pitch at this welcoming club. 'However, I came to the conclusion that it would be best to challenge myself overseas at this time. I know that not everyone will be happy to see me off, but I will fight tooth and nail so that one day you will all think that this decision was the right one and feel proud of me. It is thanks to all of you that I was able to build the foundation as a professional football player. It was a short time of about two years, but thank you so much!'
