Calon Hearts offering free heart screenings for young people
Calon Hearts, a charity known for its work in heart health across Wales, is now providing free heart screenings for 16 to 25-year-olds in various locations throughout Wales and the UK. The screenings, which can be booked on the Calon Hearts website, were inspired by the tragic death of 25-year-old Ben McDonald, who died from an undiagnosed heart condition at the finish line of the Cardiff Half Marathon in October 2018. The charity has made significant contributions to heart health over the past 13 years, installing more than 35,000 defibrillators, training more than 195,000 in CPR, and screening at least 26,400 hearts for potential life-threatening conditions. Calon Hearts operates solely on public donations and fundraising events, receiving no government support. The charity stresses the importance of heart screening, revealing that one in four screenings require further investigation. For more information and to book a screening, visit the Calon Hearts website.

Charity set to cancel its May Day carnival blaming Cardiff council's fees
Charity set to cancel its May Day carnival blaming Cardiff council's fees Calon Hearts hit out at what it called the "eye-wateringly high", "exorbitant" cost for a road closure The charity says it has held it "May Day Carnival" at Whitchurch Common more than a decade (Image: Richard Williams ) A charity event that has been held in Cardiff for over a decade is set to be cancelled this year as the charity criticises Cardiff council over a charge for a road closure. Calon Hearts, a local Welsh charity that supports heart health across Wales has held its annual 'May Day Carnival' for 13 years at Whitchurch Common. However, the charity announced that the event will not be held at the venue this year while alleging that Cardiff Council has put a stop to the event saying it has become 'too popular'. The charity said that due to this, the event was moved to the smaller location of Llandaff Green. The event has seen huge participation in past years (Image: Richard Williams ) But now, Calon Hearts said that after reconsidering whether the event can still be held at Llandaff Green, it has decided to the cancel the use of the location as it claims that Cardiff Council was charging them an 'exorbitant charge' amounting to £1,828.00 for a 'minor' road closure. The charity's May Day Carnival is now scheduled to be held at the Llandaff Rowing Club, Bridge Road, Llandaff. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here Article continues below Sharon Owen, Director of Calon Hearts, has also expressed her disappointment at what she called the Cardiff Council's 'eye-wateringly high costs'. She said: 'We are heartbroken at the possibility of having to cancel our May Day Carnival, which has been a popular family event for over 13 years." She added: 'The Council's eye-wateringly high costs are making it unfeasible for smaller charities, like ours, to host these events, which not only bring the community together but also help charities like Calon Hearts to raise essential funds.' Calon Hearts said that this would mean a loss of vital charity funds for the event. It added that cancellation of the will leave many disappointed as it provides vital exposure to charity and has brought 'joy to the community over the years.' The charity has stressed that a cancellation of the event would 'present a significant blow" to Calon Hearts' fundraising efforts, as the charity heavily relies on donations generated through public events such as this, to continue its "life-saving work.' The charity claims that this fundraising has helped it provide free heart screening to people aged 16-25 years, with subsidised heart screening for older ages. A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: 'Cardiff Council has been working with Calon Hearts over several weeks so that it could make the necessary arrangements for its May fundraising event. This culminated in Calon Hearts agreeing the cost associated with the Council facilitating the event on the 24th March - a cost which Council staff worked hard to ensure was kept to an absolute minimum. 'Included in the cost are five staff on the ground for an eight-hour period on the day, to manage the highway closure between Summer Palace and the Cathedral Green, and to manage access to Heol Fair." They added: 'On receiving the Council's invoice last week, Calon Hearts took the decision to no longer cover the costs, and therefore as it stands to not go ahead with its event. 'Calon Hearts found itself in similar position before its Christmas fundraising event last year. On that occasion Cardiff Council was able to help the charity secure a sponsor to pay the costs. However, we made it clear at the time that Calon Hearts must ensure that they have funding or sponsorship in place for its events in future. 'Cardiff Council sincerely hopes that Calon Hearts is able to find the funds or a sponsor to cover the costs for its May fundraising event. Whilst in a perfect world, we would like to provide staff and resource free of charge, unfortunately the ongoing budget position doesn't allow us to do so. Article continues below 'It is important to note that a similar event on private land would be significantly more expensive than the costs the Council has outlined to the charity."
