England legend's three-word Ashes warning for Australia
Former England captain Michael Vaughan expects the Poms to 'pack the batting' for this summer's hotly anticipated Ashes series. Australia's top order looked shaky on some very ordinary pitches in the West Indies, with the bowling attack steering the Aussies to a 3-0 series victory, patching over concerns about the batting line-up. Cameron Green was the lone bright spot from a batting perspective as he made his case to stay at No. 3, but there are significant question marks over openers Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja. The start of the Sheffield Shield season will certainly have a bearing on selection, and Jason Sangha and Jake Weatherald have already put their hand up with big hundreds for Australia A. 'You've sometimes got to be fair to a batting unit,' Vaughan told 'You've also got to be fair that they've had to play on some horrendous pitches. It's not been easy. 'That's where were you have to be careful of criticising the batting unit. Some of these pitches are flat but some of the pitches in the Caribbean were poor pitches.' England lead a five-Test series against India 2-1, with the tourists 4/264 after Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. India's wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was carted off the field with a foot injury, and it will be a massive blow if he can't play out the series. Liam Dawson was brought into England's XI as the spinning option, replacing Shoab Bashir who fractured his finger in the previous Test. The 35-year-old dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal, in his first Test since July 17, 2017 — 2,929 days ago. Dawson is a capable batter and Vaughan believes he could be England's spinner for the Ashes instead of Bashir or Jack Leach. Jofra Archer returned to England's line-up earlier in the series but the Poms are yet to settle on a first-choice bowling attack. They have no shortage of pace bowling options in Archer, Mark Wood, Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts — which will be crucial in unsettling Australia's batters Down Under. Asked to name England's preferred bowling attack, Vaughan said: 'I don't know. I'd say Archer is a shoe in if he's fit. Brydon Carse is a shoe in if he's fit. 'I think Gus Atkinson, Ben Stokes. It wouldn't surprise me if they went with Mark Wood as well and they didn't play a spinner. 'And I can't believe they won't take Chris Woakes when you look at a day-night Test in Brisbane and maybe Sydney where the ball seamed around. 'Just pack the batting and put Jacob Bethell in somewhere to bowl a bit of left arm spin. 'England have started to gather a group of players that have got options, and that's going to be the key in Australia — making sure that week in, week out, they pick the right XI. 'Conditions are going to be so different in Australia. Perth will be quick and bouncy. Brisbane under the lights might nibble. Adelaide in the day will probably be quite flat. 'Then you get to Melbourne, anything is possible and then Sydney anything's possible. 'So you've got to be really wary of saying, 'this is our team'. 'You've got to be clever enough to know that week in, week out, your bowling attack may look different for the conditions. 'England will bring a strong squad of difference. If the captain's fit and firing, he holds the key. 'If Ben Stokes is fit and firing, the Ashes are going to be very, very competitive. If Ben's Stokes isn't firing or isn't fit and can only bat, there lies a big problem for England. It's so important that Ben Stokes is fit.' Vaughan's suggestion that England's already settled batting line-up could be further bolstered is an ominous call for an Australian team that has struggled to compile solid scores in recent times. Although on the other hand, none of Joe Root's 37 Test centuries have been scored in Australia. While Ashes series in England are often close contests, Vaughan said it was crucial England put up a fight in Australia this summer given they haven't won a Test match in enemy territory since the 2010-11 Ashes triumph. 'We really do need a close series in Australia because there hasn't been one,' Vaughan said. 'In my lifetime 86-87 is probably the last time it's been really close. 2010-11 England won, but it wasn't close, England dominated that series. 'We need a real close Ashes series in Australia. If that happened, it would be absolutely huge. 'We've had two close series in the last two Ashes here in the UK, but we need one in Australia and I get a sense this England team will bring it. 'I'll think they'll make it as close as it has been and I think we'll give Australia a good run for their money in their own backyard.'

Ricky Ponting's genius laid bare after call on Aussie bolter already proven right
Former Aussie cricket captain Ricky Ponting has once again shown why he is considered one of the great minds in the game having touted Jason Sangha as a potential bolter for the Aussie Test XI for the Ashes. The Aussie XI has undergone some changes across the last 12 months with Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas and Marnus Labuschagne all having a crack at opening alongside Usman Khawaja. Cameron Green has also been promoted to No.3 with Steve Smith occupying his second drop position. However, the top order has struggled to find their groove with no-one consistently finding runs against South Africa or the West Indies. Konstas is under pressure to hold his place for the Ashes, while Green has endured a tough start to his career at first drop. While Green managed some runs in the West Indies, the 26-year-old still hasn't convinced some he is the long-term replacement at No.3. Speaking after the West Indies series, Ponting said he believes the selectors will stick with the top four as they are heading into the Ashes. But he also tipped Sangha to push for Ashes selection with his form. 'The start of the Sheffield Shield season will be an interesting one ... I'll throw another name in that I think is a highly talented Australian batsman, that's Jason Sangha,' Ponting told the ICC Review podcast this week. 'I think (Sangha is) someone whose name will probably come up at some stage as well, but there's just not many games now, not many opportunities to be able to get yourself and get your name up in front of the selectors.' On Wednesday, Sangha vindicated Ponting's call almost immediately, knocking on the door of selection once again with a double-century against Sri Lanka A. Sangha scored 202 not out off 379 balls as Australia A reached 4-558 before the game was declared a draw at tea on day four. He also scored two half-centuries against Sri Lanka A in Darwin across the opening two matches to continue his exhilarating form. Earlier this year, Sangha scored 126 not out to lead South Australia to a close four-wicket victory over Queensland in the Sheffield Shield final. This contributed to an average of 78.2 across six Shield games last season. And with Ponting watching the 25-year-old closely, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Sangha propelled into the Aussie Text XI if an opportunity arises. But Sangha's mid-career resurgence isn't the only talking point from the side. Teenager Oliver Peake scored 92 off 178 balls against Sri Lanka A, which will see the selectors keeping an eye on the 18-year-old talent. And opener Jake Weatherald blasted 183 to put more pressure on Konstas at the top of the order. Konstas, 200 up for Jason Sangha! And some real class shown by Sri Lanka A, congratulating him after he reached the double #AusAvSLA - — (@cricketcomau) July 23, 2025 Jake Weatherald & Jason Sangha are both very likely to be in the Ashes squad, if not playing XI itself in top 4, although these A team runs seem to be on a flat wicket. Both had really good Shield seasons too. Good time to peak as a top-order batter in Aus domestic cricket. — Rohit Sankar (@imRohit_SN) July 23, 2025 Jason Sangha's first class numbers since his Shield return last December: 906 runs @ 90.6, 4 centuries. Top scored in 8 of those 14 innings which is just nuts — Ethan (@ethanmeldrum_) July 23, 2025 Ricky Ponting backs Sam Konstas for Ashes The Aussie batters endured a brutal time in the West Indies with no player across either team scoring more than 75 runs in an innings in the three match series. Although Konstas particularly struggled. The 19-year-old only scored 50 runs across his six innings having averaged 8.33 in the series. And now it appears there is more pressure on Konstas than ever heading into the Ashes with McSweeney and Weatherald back in the runs. Although Ponting feels the selectors will standby the current side. 'The (batters) that they're talking about the last couple of weeks in particular, have been (Sam) Konstas and (Usman) Khawaja, and then there was some talk about Cameron Green, if he was a long term No.3 three or not,' Ponting said about the make-up of the side. RELATED: Pat Cummins makes call on Sam Konstas after struggles continue Marnus Labuschagne spotted in strange moment amid Aussie win '(Green's) second innings in the West Indies (in the last Test) might have just put some of that to bed. As tough as those conditions were to bat for as long as he did in trying conditions he might have silenced a few of those critics. 'I think with where they're at, I think the Ashes line-up is going to be like it is right now. I think that's what they're going to be starting with, and you keep your fingers crossed and hope that those guys can get the job done at the start.' Aussie coach Andrew McDonald suggested Konstas does need to score some runs in the Sheffield Shield to prove he is ready for the Ashes. 'I think it leaves him where everyone else is in terms of Shield cricket at the start of the season, we're not going to shy away from the fact that will be big for certain individuals to go about their work, put some scores on the board, and, and then for us to look at what we need against England," McDonald said.

Ruthless Australia deny Andre Russell a winning farewell
West Indies stalwart Andre Russell was denied a winning farewell after Josh Inglis and Cameron Green smashed unbeaten half-centuries to secure Australia's eight-wicket victory in the second Twenty20 International on Tuesday. Put into bat, West Indies managed 172-8 as opener Brandon King topscored with a breezy 51 and Russell smashed 36 off 15 balls in his final knock in international cricket. Australia's Inglis (78) and Green (56) then pulverised the West Indies attack in an unbroken 131-run partnership to complete the chase in 15.2 overs, putting the tourists 2-0 ahead in the five-match series. West Indies did not help their own cause by spilling six catches. "I'm very grateful to end my career here playing in front of my own crowd, family and friends," Russell said. "The result didn't go my way, but at the end of the day, I'm happy, I'm grateful. "I wish the boys all the very best, and I wish them luck moving forward," added the 37-year-old two-time World Cup winner. Australia sprang a surprise by asking Glenn Maxwell (12) to open the innings with skipper Mitchell Marsh (21) but the ploy did not pay off, both departing caught behind inside six overs. However, Inglis smashed five sixes in an unbeaten 33-ball blitz, while Green's second successive fifty of the series included four of them. "I think I felt like I managed the tempo pretty well at times," player of the match Inglis said. "After probably being a bit lucky early being dropped, I felt like I managed those middle periods really well with Greeny. "We sort of identified spin was going to be really tough to play on that wicket, so we sort of took our medicine there and went after the quicks." Australia, who won the preceding Test series 3-0, can clinch the series with a third successive victory in Basseterre on Saturday.

Russell's sparkling farewell in vain as Australia sprint to T20 win
The 37-year-old all-rounder was unable to script a fairytale farewell to his glittering T20 career, but departed to a standing ovation on his home Sabina Park ground after hitting four trademark sixes and two fours. Batting at number seven in his 85th and last T20 international, Russell's cameo, plus a late flurry from Gudakesh Motie (18 off nine balls) added to 51 from opener Brandon King enabled the hosts to score 172-8 off their 20 overs. But a record 131-run stand by Josh Inglis, who made 78 not out, and Cameron Green (56 not out) saw Australia race to an eight-wicket win with more than four overs to spare. It was Australia's highest third-wicket partnership in Twenty20 internationals and, aided by six dropped catches by West Indies fielders, gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Inglis hit seven fours and five sixes while Green was barely more sedate, clearing the ropes four times and stroking three fours in his second consecutive fifty. "I didn't want to finish on a losing note," said Russell, whose spectacular final knock had briefly thrilled his hometown crowd. "I enjoy seeing the ball go over the ropes," he added. "As a kid you dream about playing here. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support me." Russell, who was given a guard of honour before the match by both teams, played just one Test match. It was as a Twenty20 specialist that he made his name, winning the T20 World Cup twice with the West Indies in 2012 and 2016. A more than lively seam bowler, Russell's free-scoring late-order batting and athletic fielding saw him sought after by T20 leagues around the world. He has been with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL since 2014, scoring more than 2,400 runs. © 2025 AFP

Inglis and Green lead Australia to victory, spoiling Andre Russell's last game for West Indies
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Josh Inglis and Cameron Green combined in a record partnership for Australia to ensure 'Dre Day' at Sabina Park didn't end in a victory for West Indies Twenty20 cricket great Andre Russell. After plundering four big sixes and scoring 36 off 15 balls before he skied a top edge that ended his last international innings, Russell had to wait and see if a total of 172-8 would be enough for West Indies to hold off Australia on Tuesday.
