Stampeders in Week 9 — QB Vernon Adams Jr. up in air to play host Redblacks
Article content Article content Pretty much everyone on the Stamps has got to be feeling it. Article content After all, they're heading into their fourth game in 20 days, and last week's contest took a toll on them health-wise. Article content Adams wasn't the only casualty on the offence. So, too, were a couple of his key receivers — rookie Damien Alford and veteran Jalen Philpot both suffered hamstring injuries. And neither participated in practice Sunday, but Philpot was a limited participant Monday. Article content To boot, the offence is still without clutch receiver Clark Barnes, who's still got an ankle issue and didn't practise Sunday or Monday. Article content 'It's tough on the guys, definitely in the trenches,' added Adams, of the tight schedule. 'I feel for those guys (on the offensive line), but these guys are working hard, they're hitting the weight room, and they're doing what they need to do to get their bodies together. So we had a little lighter practice, I think, just to get guys (healthy) — we got some guys down. So guys are doing what they need to do to be out here.' Article content Article content With injuries to multiple defensive backs last week — Adrian Greene (lower body) and Ben Labrosse (hamstring) were both lost at the field-side cornerback spot, the Stampeders have signed Canadian DB Dolani Robinson. The 6-foot-3, 194-lb. Robinson attended training camp with the Stampeders in May and participated in both pre-season games, notching two defensive tackles, one special-teams tackle and one knockdown. The native of Jamaica and 2024 Canada West all-star with the U SPORTS' Regina Rams was among the final round of roster cuts at the conclusion of camp … DB Tyler Richardson (groin), who started the first four games for the Stamps at boundary-side corner, and DB Jackson Sombach (hamstring) are also injured secondary talents … Labrosse did not practise Monday, while Sombach was a limited participant at practice Monday, as was LS Aaron Crawford (knee) … Other injured Stamps practising fully at Monday's session were OL Josh Coker (ankle) — the starter at right tackle — LB Kelechi Anyalebechi (foot) and LB Justin Herdman-Reed (neck). Plus-minus: Saskatchewan Huskies navigate through changing hockey landscape, new NCAA rules
Article content While NCAA eligibility rules have changed to allow major junior players to play there, and with purse-strings down south loosening tremendously in many cases to attract recruits, U Sports has countered with a rule change of its own. Former pros are now eligible to play Canadian university hockey without having to sit out a full year. Article content Enter Roulette, Thomson and Thornton. Article content Thornton, a native of Winnipeg, signed a one-way American Hockey League deal with the Hershey Bears but ended up in the ECHL for most of last season. Article content 'A real good player,' Cote said of Thornton. 'A good offensive-minded D-man. Very similar to Kosior, just left-handed. He'll really help us, obviously, with losing Landon.' Article content Kosior heads south to the NCAA despite having played minor-pro hockey himself. That no longer seems to be a barrier for entry into the NCAA ranks as long as you haven't signed an NHL contract. Article content Article content 'That's the thing — it is what it is,' said Cote. 'I never anticipated losing Landon. These guys aren't leaving because they didn't like it here. They feel they're getting to be able to take advantage of new opportunities — that's just the way the world is right now in our area. I don't know how he's eligible (for NCAA after playing minor pro), but he is. He got an opportunity to go down there, and there are other guys who are going to the same spot that are in the same boat as Landon, for the most part. Article content 'And Trevor, that was a tough one … (But) they're getting opportunities to play where they foresee themselves potentially getting a little more exposure with the pro level and whatever else they're being offered. Article content 'I have no ill-will against either of them. They were great Huskies for the short time they were here and they helped us win another Canada West championship. They're great people and great players, so I wish them all the best.' Article content Article content Article content The Huskies' arch-rival Alberta Golden Bears have been hit particularly hard by off-season departures to the NCAA. They've lost goalie Tyler Palmer, D-men Aidan De La Gorgendiere and Marc Lajoie, plus forwards Sean Tschigerl, Brett Hyland and Ty Nash. Other departures include defenceman Elias Carmichael (European pro), forward Josh Prokop (pro) and Tyler Preziuso (graduated). Article content The Dogs expect the majority of their team from last season to return, with some younger guys taking on larger roles. Article content 'We still have lots of guys that are returning that are in their second or third years that are ready to take steps,' said Cote. Article content dzary@

‘Very proud': University of Regina Cougars' women's basketball coach stepping down after 19 seasons
University of Regina women's basketball coach Dave Taylor is stepping down, the school announced Thursday. (Source: University of Regina Cougars) After 19 seasons as head coach of the University of Regina (U of R) women's basketball team, Dave Taylor will be stepping down from the program prior to the 2025-26 season, the school announced Thursday. 'It was a very hard decision to leave the U of R,' Taylor said in a press release. 'My time has been filled with great memories of the people, the games, the fan support and the day-to-day enjoyment of the job.' 'The program is in a great place and I feel the time is right to leave. I am very proud of the run of success,' he added. Taylor had been the coach of the Cougars since the 2006-07 season and amassed a program-high 280 regular-season wins in his career. He led the Cougars to two Canada West titles (2013, 2018) and nine national tournament appearances, including trips to the national championship game in 2008, 2009 and 2013. The Cougars saw a great deal of individual successes on the national level under Taylor's leadership as well, including three U SPORTS First-Team All-Canadians, six second-team All-Canadians, and two U SPORTS Rookie of the Year award winners during his time. The team never failed to qualify for the conference playoffs under Taylor, who is a two-time winner of both the national and Canada West Coach of the Year awards (2011-12, 2022-23). 61 of the Cougars' 111 all-time playoff victories came with Taylor at the helm, and his .757 regular-season win percentage and .656 playoff mark are both tops in program history. His 482 wins against U SPORTS opponents ranks 10th all-time in U SPORTS women's basketball history and he leaves with the fourth-most playoff wins of all-time. 'Dave is truly a Regina basketball legend,' U of R Director of Sport, Community Engagement & Athlete Development Lisa Robertson said. 'Throughout his incredible career, he led the Cougars to heights that few programs ever reach, consistently keeping them among the nation's best and making them a powerhouse in the highly-competitive Canada West conference.' 'His teams brought our community together, filling the gym during thrilling playoff runs and unforgettable battles,' she added. Taylor's tenure with the Cougars expands long beyond his head coaching role, as he joined the program as an assistant coach at the beginning of the 1993-94 season. His time as an assistant saw the Cougars win a national championship (2001) and four conference championships (1999, 2000, 2001, 2004). He served as an assistant coach under both Christine Stapleton and Jeff Speedy for a total of 13 seasons before being named the program's ninth head coach in May of 2006. 'I want to thank my wife Jennifer and children Anna, Reese and Hayden who always supported me,' Taylor said. 'Thanks to all the amazing players I got to coach and the assistant coaches and staff who helped me run the program.' 'Thanks to the community for all the support that allowed us to compete at the highest level. I leave full of wonderful memories,' the coach added. 'Women's basketball in the province is stronger and richer because of Dave's leadership, passion, and dedication,' Robertson said. 'Both the University and the basketball community in Saskatchewan owe Dave a deep debt of gratitude. We wish Dave and his family nothing but the very best.' 'He will always be part of the Cougar family,' the school added. According to the U of R, Taylor has accepted the position of women's basketball coach for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Michaela Kleisinger will take on head coaching duties in an interim role for the 2025-26 season. A comprehensive search will be conducted to identify the program's next head coach prior to the 2026-27 season.
