Canada Condemns Israel over Gaza's ‘Humanitarian Disaster'

Canada has condemned Israel's failure to put an end to the unthinkable humanitarian conditions in Gaza after almost 21 months of war, according to Al Arabiya. In a post on X, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as 'disaster,' accusing Israel of violating international law by blocking the Canadian-funded aid from delivery to civilians in Gaza. 'Canada calls on all sides to negotiate an immediate ceasefire in good faith. We reiterate our calls for Hamas to immediately release all the hostages, and for the Israeli government to respect the territorial integrity of the West Bank and Gaza,' Carney said. Thus, it will intensify its efforts in all fora to achieve that goal, including through the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the UN High-Level Conference on a Two-State Solution in New York next week. In April, Carney also denounced Israeli blockade on supplies in Gaza, noting that food must not be used as a 'political tool,' according to Reuters. 'The UN World Food Programme just announced that its food stocks in Gaza have run out because of the Israeli Government's blockade — food cannot be used as a political tool,' Carney said on X. The UN agency revealed that Gaza has not received any humanitarian or commercial supplies for over seven weeks as a result to the closure of all main border crossing points. This blockade marked the longest closure in Gaza since the beginning of the war. 'We will continue to work with our allies toward a permanent ceasefire and the immediate return of all hostages,' Carney stated. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 57,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 137,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Carney calls Israel denying humanitarian aid in Gaza 'violation of international law'

Prime Minister Mark Carney has called Israel's denial of humanitarian aid in Gaza a violation of international law. In a news statement on Thursday, he pressed for Israel's control of aid distribution to be replaced amid reports of mass starvation in Gaza. His statement comes hours after French President Emmanuel Macron announced on X that he intends for his country to recognize a Palestinian state (new window) at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Israel's control of aid distribution must be replaced by comprehensive provision of humanitarian assistance led by international organizations, Carney said in a media statement Thursday evening. Many of these are holding significant Canadian-funded aid which has been blocked from delivery to starving civilians. This denial of humanitarian aid is a violation of international law, he said. Carney reiterated that Canada supports a two-state solution which guarantees peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians. Israel condemned Macron's announcement made on X, in which he shared a letter sent to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas confirming France's intention to press ahead and work to convince other partners to follow suit. True to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine, Macron said. I will make this solemn announcement at the United Nations General Assembly next September. Joint statement calls Gaza aid distribution 'dangerous' Earlier on Thursday, federal Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said that she would attend a two-state solution conference in New York City, where she will meet with her French counterparts to discuss Macron's decision. We need to ensure that Hamas lays down its arms and does not participate in any way in the governance of an eventual two-state solution, she said, noting that ensuring that humanitarian aid flows and that hostages are released are important for Canadians. Anand and 24 of her counterparts abroad signed a joint statement on Monday, calling Israel's aid distribution system dangerous and asserting that the war in Gaza must end now. The signatories, including foreign ministers of France, Japan and the U.K. and the European Union commissioner for equality, preparedness and crisis management, said it's horrifying that over 800 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid. The death toll cited is based on figures released by the UN Human Rights Office (new window) . In their statement, the ministers also condemned Hamas for continuing to hold Israeli hostages captured in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack and called for their immediate release. Gaza situation beyond ‘worst fears,' Australia says amid mass starvation

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is beyond the world's 'worst fears,' Australia's government said Friday, as reports of mass starvation and disease across the war-torn enclave persist. 'The situation in Gaza has gone beyond the world's worst fears. The position of the Australian Government is clear: every innocent life matters,' Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement. 'Every Israeli. Every Palestinian. This conflict has stolen far too many innocent lives.' 'Tens of thousands of civilians are dead, children are starving,' he continued. 'Gaza is in the grip of a humanitarian catastrophe. Israel's denial of aid and the killing of civilians, including children, seeking access to water and food cannot be defended or ignored.' Albanese added, 'We call on Israel to comply immediately with its obligations under international law. This includes allowing the United Nations and NGOs to carry out their lifesaving work safely and without hindrance.' After a temporary ceasefire ended between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas, Israeli officials blocked the delivery of aid to the Gaza from March to May. Since then, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), supported by Israel, has distributed aid to some areas of the strip overseen by the Jewish State. The organization, also backed by the U.S. government, has distributed over 90 million meals to Palestinians in Gaza since May, according to the State Department. Still, the food pickup sites are dangerous, as hundreds of Palestinians have been killed, with the Israeli military at times firing live ammunition for crowd control. The Israeli military has argued that the aid distribution system is set up to bar Hamas from stealing food and the country's officials have pinned the blame of Palestinian suffering on Hamas. Israel was also criticized by Canada and the United Kingdom, with Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney arguing that Israel's control of aid distribution 'must be replaced by comprehensive provision of humanitarian assistance led by international organizations.' 'Many of these are holding significant Canadian-funded aid which has been blocked from delivery to starving civilians. This denial of humanitarian aid is a violation of international law,' Carney said Thursday in a statement. The statements come as France's President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that France will soon recognize Palestinian statehood, becoming the first Group of Seven (G7) nation to do so. Ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, a U.S.-government-designated terrorist group, fell apart as President Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said the administration is looking at alternative options to free the hostages from Hamas. 'It is a shame that Hamas has acted in this selfish way,' Witkoff said Thursday. 'We are resolute in seeking an end to this conflict and a permanent peace in Gaza.' The conflict ignited after Hamas's Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel, killing some 1,200 Israelis and taking roughly 250 hostages. Since then, the Israeli military has killed over 57,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials. The tally does distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Canada slams Israel over Gaza aid blockade, urges global control of relief

OTTAWA — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday condemned Israel's ongoing control of humanitarian aid access to Gaza, urging that international organizations be allowed to lead relief operations to address the deepening crisis. 'Israel's control of aid distribution must be replaced by comprehensive provision of humanitarian assistance led by international organizations,' Carney said in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter. He noted that several global agencies currently hold 'significant Canadian-funded aid' that remains blocked from reaching starving civilians. Carney asserted that the continued obstruction of humanitarian access constitutes 'a violation of international law,' and called on Israel to relinquish its hold on aid routes. The remarks come amid growing international alarm over worsening hunger, disease, and displacement across Gaza due to the months-long Israeli blockade. The Canadian leader also urged all parties to commit to a negotiated ceasefire 'in good faith,' reiterating his government's demand for Hamas to release all hostages and for Israel to respect the territorial integrity of both Gaza and the West Bank. 'Canada supports a two-state solution which guarantees peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians,' Carney affirmed. He added that Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand will represent Ottawa at the upcoming UN High-Level Conference on a Two-State Solution, scheduled to take place in New York next week. Israel's blockade on Gaza, now entering its ninth month, has drawn sharp criticism from humanitarian organizations. UN officials and aid groups warn that the restricted flow of food, water, fuel, and medical supplies is worsening the humanitarian disaster in the besieged territory, home to over two million Palestinians. — Agencies
