Polish Indie Kino Swiat Names New CEO

Dorota Eberhardt, a former Warner Bros. Discovery executive, has been named the new CEO of Kino Świat, Poland's leading independent film producer/distributor. Kino Świat's parent company, French media group Canal+, unveiled the appointment on Friday. Eberhardt will report to Alex Hamilton, chief international officer at Canal+ subsidiary Studiocanal, and is expected to assume her role later this year. In her new position, Eberhardt will focus on maintaining and expanding Kino Świat's position as Poland's leading indie producer/distributor — the company was the country's number 2 distributor in 2023, racking up 6.9 million theatrical admissions for its features, in particular by boosting the production of local-language films. 'Appointing Dorota Eberhardt to this position is a key step in the continued development of Kino Świat.' Eberhardt held roles at Polish video-game group CD Projekt and Disney's local theatrical partner Forum Film Poland before joining Warner Bros Discovery a decade ago. She most recently served as VP of programming, streaming, and new channels at WBD's Polish operation TVN. 'She has an excellent track record across the film and television landscape in Poland,' said Hamilton. 'We'll be looking to make sure she has everything she needs to expand Polish content production and align distribution strategies with evolving viewer habits.' Traders ‘pulling money out of US' after Trump trade chaos

Investors are shifting their money out of America and into Europe following the outbreak of Donald Trump's trade war, according to the boss of one of the City's leading stockbrokers. Steven Fine, the chief executive of Peel Hunt, said spooked traders had pulled an 'awful lot of money' from US markets in recent months, primarily because of the president's 'liberation day' tariff blitz. This has led to a greater degree of interest in the UK, he added. He said: 'When you're investing all your money domestically and someone can literally turn around unilaterally and say 'Right, we're not doing that any more', it's like 'Oh my God, what does that mean?'' This shift in investor sentiment marks a significant turnaround as almost $24 trillion has been pumped into US assets since 2010, according to Peel Hunt. Mr Fine said the chaos unleashed by Mr Trump had 'predicated a concern that excessive concentration in a single jurisdiction might not necessarily be the best thing'. Kallum Pickering, Peel Hunt's chief economist, also pointed to the weaker dollar as an example of how investor money is shifting away from the US. The dollar has fallen nearly 8pc against the pound since the turn of the year and has slumped by nearly 11pc versus the euro in that time. Mr Fine said: 'You think about the return of the S&P 500 over the last five years and you think, where do you want to put your money for the next five years? Suddenly [liberation day] happens, and it's like 'Ah, maybe it's not quite as [attractive].' However, Peel Hunt warned of the negative impact of tariffs on dealmaking in the City, particularly as the stockbroker is already battling a dearth of listings on the London Stock Exchange. The company said there have been 'historically low' levels of activity in UK stock markets over the last year. This led to Peel Hunt posting pre-tax losses of £3.5m for the year to the end of March, compared to a £3.3m loss the year before. However, revenues rose by 6pc to hit £91.3m. One of its highlights for the year was advising on the deal to list French TV and film giant Canal+ in London in December. Mr Fine said: 'Ongoing uncertainty continued to weigh on equity capital markets activity during the period, driven by geopolitical risks, elections, stagflation fears and US trade tariffs. 'Our diversified offering meant we were able to support clients through these changing market conditions.' Truth behind Donald Trump rumour as US President tipped to drive McLaren F1 car

Donald Trump will not be driving a Formula 1 car next week, can confirm. That was the fanciful claim made during a live broadcast from the Canadian Grand Prix on French television this weekend, sparking widespread confusion online. Of course, it sounds like an entirely ridiculous rumour, despite Trump being acquainted with McLaren chief executive Zak Brown. And a McLaren spokesperson has confirmed as much, telling when we approached the team for comment: "Not true, he won't be driving our car." The claim was reported on French television channel Canal+ during their live coverage of practice in Montreal. And, naturally, the rumour made its way onto social media where it began to get some traction. The claim was that Trump might be set to get the chance to drive an F1 car at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. It was not specified which car it would have been, other than that it was said to be a McLaren, which would surely have to be specially modified to fit the US President. The fanciful rumour was perhaps made more believable by the specific mention of McLaren. Trump was hosted by the team at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix and is said to have a personal relationship with the team's American chief executive Zak Brown. ---

Canal+ to Distribute Netflix in Francophone Africa in Landmark Pact

Canal+ has signed a first-of-its-kind distribution deal with Netflix that will see the French pay-TV player carry Netflix content for countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. Starting next month, Canal+ will offer its subscribers across 24 French-speaking African countries Netflix original content, from global hits such as Stranger Things, Money Heist, Squid Game, and Emily in Paris, to the streamer's African production slate, which includes South Africa drama Blood & Water, Nigerian series Blood Sisters, and reality series Young Famous and African. The French group currently operates 28 pay-TV channels dedicated to African audiences. The French group is currently in the process of acquiring pan-African pay-TV group MultiChoice, the continent's largest pay-TV player, which operates in 50 countries with 19.3 million subscribers. Netflix does not break out its subscriber figures for Africa, combining them in the larger Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, but the streamer is estimated to have fewer than 5 million subscribers on the continent, with the vast majority of those in the English-speaking countries of South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. 'Our millions of African subscribers will benefit from a unique offer, bringing together the best of Canal+ and Netflix content in a joint package,' said Pascale Chabert, chief content acquisition officer of Canal+, in a statement. 'This new agreement demonstrates Canal+'s ability to extend its unique super-aggregation model beyond the European continent.' During the pandemic-era streaming boom, Netflix, along with other global streamers, invested heavily in original African content in a bid to boost subscriber numbers and touted the continent, with its low streaming penetration rates and large, young population, as a future growth market. However, as Wall Street has changed its metric of success from subscriber growth to revenue per user, Africa slipped out of focus for the global streamers. Unlike Amazon Prime, which cut its investment in original programming on the continent, Netflix continues to back African originals, with such South African series as Kings of Jo'Burg and Fatal Seduction. Emma Lloyd, vp, partnerships EMEA at Netflix, said the Canal+ deal 'will allow us to reach even more people across French-speaking African countries. It's a big win for entertainment fans and part of our ongoing mission to make the member experience even better.' The Canal+ deal follows similar distribution agreements between Canal+ and Netflix for Poland and France.
