Chick-fil-A rival debuts a super budget-friendly crispy chicken slider

Your favorite chicken sandwich spot might depend on where you live. In the South and West, it's Chick-fil-A or Raising Cane's. In the Midwest, it could be Harold's Chicken Shack, and on the East Coast, Popeye's is everywhere. Over the past decade, chicken has been, ahem, ruling the roost when it comes to fast food. Chains like Chick‑fil‑A and Raising Cane's have led the charge, turning simple, hand-breaded chicken sandwiches and fingers into iconic cultural phenomena. Chick‑fil‑A, with its renowned service and catchy "EAT MOR CHIKIN" campaign, has grown from its Southern roots to become one of the fastest‑growing fast-food brands in the country. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Meanwhile, lots of people are obsessed with Raising Cane's signature chicken finger combo - crispy chicken fingers, signature Cane's Sauce, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, and coleslaw. In my town one Raising Cane's location shares a parking lot with a Whole Foods and I often wonder how much overlap there is. Judging by the drive-thru line plenty of people shop for their organic produce and then hit up Raising Cane's for dinner. This frenzy isn't just anecdotal. Chicken overtook beef as America's most consumed meat back in 2010, and per‑capita chicken consumption hit a record high of 101 pounds in 2024, according to The Financial Times. Forecasts say that number could jump to 104 pounds in 2025. Related: McDonald's secures honor no restaurants wants Fast‑food titans have taken notice: Taco Bell, Best Burgers, McDonald's, and even Subway are rolling out chicken-focused menu items in droves. The trend is driven by a mix of cost concerns (chicken is cheaper than beef), public health trends leaning toward high-protein diets, and consumer demographics: Millennials and Gen Z are especially enamored with chicken's affordability and perceived "healthiness." Never mind that most of this chicken is deep-fried, so not exactly healthy. The so-called "chicken sandwich wars" that erupted in 2019 when Popeyes and Chick‑fil‑A began their battle for dominance. The competition has only increased as more chains hop aboard the crispy‑chicken bandwagon. Image source: Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images In late June 2025, White Castle made a significant move: the launch of its Crispy Chicken Slider a new permanent menu item. It is the brand's first sizable menu addition since 2022. Debuting on June 30, the slider features tender, all‑white meat chicken fried in buttermilk breading and topped with a house-made honeycomb mustard sauce-all on White Castle's signature soft buns, according to a company announcement. White Castle also offers a Deluxe version, which layers on American cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Related: Trader Joe's rivals could learn a lesson from the cult favorite company Notably, the slider is larger and crispier than its predecessor. It's just $2.39 for the basic version and $2.59 for the Deluxe. The brand is also offering a $5 combo (two sliders, fries, and a drink) exclusively through its Craver Nation Rewards app which its value-focused customers will appreciate this summer. White Castle's move is likely a response to broader market trends. White Castle's core appeal has long been low-cost, sliders; the new chicken offering lets the chain flex in the booming chicken category without abandoning its value‑centric brand identity. The permanent menu addition puts White Castle in strong company, alongside other major chains like McDonald's, Popeyes, and Taco Bell, which have also been expanding chicken lineups, according to a report in Restaurant Dive. The surge in chicken-focused fast food doesn't seem like a fad. It aligns with increased consumer interest in protein-rich, lower-cost foods alongside macroeconomic pressures (like budget tightening and post-pandemic inflation). Chains are responding by diversifying within chicken offerings-fried, grilled, sandwiches, sliders, nuggets, and combos. From Chick‑fil‑A's stealth empire to Cane's laser focus, and now White Castle's pivot with a value-priced, craveable chicken slider, the American fast‑food landscape is firmly in chicken's corner. As long as consumers crave flavor, protein, and value, expect chicken to continue to dominate. KFC No Longer in Top 3 US Chicken Chains

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), a long-established force in the American fast-food chicken market, has been surpassed in popularity by a rising competitor and no longer ranks among the top three chicken chains in the United States. As reported by CNBC on Monday, Louisiana-based fast food chain Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers has overtaken KFC in annual U.S. sales, now trailing only Chick-fil-A and Popeyes. Newsweek reached out to KFC and Raising Cane's via email for comment. What To Know According to CNBC, Raising Cane's saw sales of $5.1 billion last year across its more than 900 restaurants, more than doubling its result from 2021. Founded in 1996, the company has rapidly expanded and now operates locations in 42 states, as well as in several Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Its menu primarily features hand-battered chicken fingers as well as crinkle-cut fries, buttery "Texas toast," and a signature Cane's Sauce. Its recent success has propelled Raising Cane's to number 18 on Technomic's list of U.S. restaurant chains by annual system sales—the total sales generated by a brand, both company-owned and franchised—two spots ahead of KFC and up 10 places from the previous year. Technomic's list continues to be led by well-known fast-food giants, with McDonald's, Starbucks, and Chick-fil-A occupying the top three positions. A KFC restaurant in Vallejo, California, as seen on July 10, 2024. A KFC restaurant in Vallejo, California, as seen on July 10, Cane's founder, Todd Graves, told Nation's Restaurant News in September 2024 that he hopes the company can crack the top 10, powered by significant store expansion and a goal of reaching $10 billion in annual sales. A previous report from market research firm Circana found that consumer spending at Cane's, Chick-fil-A, Popeyes and other major chains increased last year, while consumer spending at KFC restaurants in the U.S. fell by 4 percent. However, KFC has seen greater success in 2025. In April, parent company Yum Brands, which also owns Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, reported a 3.7 percent increase in first-quarter U.S. revenue. This was driven by higher worldwide system sales at Taco Bell and KFC, as well as an increase in same-store sales for both divisions. What People Are Saying Raising Cane's founder and co-CEO Todd Graves told NRN in September: "Our next aspiration is to be a top 10 restaurant brand in the U.S. Think of the big boys – McDonald's, Wendy's, Starbucks, Subway – companies that have been open a lot longer than we have." "We are going to hit $10 billion in sales, average unit volumes of $8 million, and 1,600 restaurants in all major cities and new international locations around the world," he added. "We'll have 150,000 crew members including 16,000 internal promotes. And we'll give back $100 million to communities." What Happens Next According to CNBC, Raising Cane's plans to expand to 1,000 restaurants by the end of the year.

Raising Cane's Just Opened Its First Location In This Southern City

When Raising Cane's opened its first location in Southaven, Mississippi this week, a long line of customers was already waiting. It's no wonder, because the new restaurant gave 20 lucky customers free Cane's for a year, according to WREG in Memphis. The Louisiana-based chicken chain is known for chicken fingers dipped in Cane's Sauce, a proprietary and top-secret recipe. Combos come with a side of crinkle-cut fries, cole slaw, and Texas toast. WREG says a 10-year-old, Adam Hamed, got his parents to drive him from out of town at 6 a.m. for a chance at free chicken. The store opened at 10 and Hamed was 83rd in line. 'It's the sauce and the chicken tenders. That's what I love — the sauce,' said Hamed. As for the woman who was first in line, Suzette Hughes from Milington, she slept outside the door. 'There is no place like Cane's… no place like Cane's… no place like Cane's,' she told WREG. 'I got here last night, about 8 last night, camped on the sidewalk. Had my blowup queen-size air bed. That's where I slept.' Those who didn't win a year's worth of chicken still got something for their efforts. The chicken chain gave out a commemorative hat and free box combo card to the first 100 buyers of a combo. Raising Cane's has added more than 800 locations since the original restaurant opened near LSU's campus in 1996. Read the original article on Southern Living

Raising Cane's celebrates Rockford opening

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Rockford residents will no longer have to drive 35 to 40 miles to cool their desire for fresh hot chicken fingers from Raising Cane's. 'I am very excited,' said customer Catherine Kelley, of Rockford. 'This is the first one that's here in the Rockford area.' Raising Cane's is set to open Tuesday, April 15, on the southwest corner of East State Street and South Trainer Road. Until that day, the closest locations were in DeKalb and Janesville, Wisconsin. 'We've been expanding our restaurants across Illinois, and we finally expanded to Rockford,' said Lidia Soto, Raising Cane's area leader of restaurants. 'And we have a big group of crew members who are super excited and thrilled and just ready to rock and serve our incredible chicken-finger meals.' The opening comes six months ahead of schedule. 'This building has a double-lane drive-thru, as well as a spacious dining room,' Soto said. 'And we also have an outdoor seating area, which is perfect, in time for spring.' The menu at Raising Cane's is a focused one. The customer favorite is the Box Combo: four chicken fingers with Cane's Sauce, fries, Texas toast, and coleslaw. 'The toast is probably my favorite part,' said Rockford resident Sierra Gregg, who grabbed lunch Monday during the Raising Cane's corporate training event. 'The fries are always good. And the chicken is great with the sauce and the coleslaw brings it all together.' The 3,225 square-foot will be open from 10 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., Friday and Saturday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
