Police plan weekend sobriety checkpoint in Barstow
The Barstow Police Department is planning to hold a sobriety checkpoint this weekend.
The checkpoint will be held from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday along Main Street, east of Avenue J, the agency announced in a written statement.
"The checkpoint will be staffed by uniformed officers from the Barstow Police Department who are trained in detecting alcohol or drug impaired drivers," the statement said. "Officers will also be equipped with handheld, blood-alcohol testing devices, which provide an accurate measure of blood-alcohol concentration of suspected drunk drivers."
All vehicles that pass through the checkpoint will be screened, traffic permitting, officials said.
"A Sobriety Checkpoint is an effective and proven method to remove intoxicated drivers from local highways," according to the police statement. "They also help raise public awareness of this important driving safety issue while augmenting regular patrol operations."

The checkpoint is being funded, in part, by a grant from the Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program, through the California Highway Patrol.
