Cape Cod Times Neighbors Fund kicks off summer appeal. Here's how you can help others
It's that time of year again: beach days, barbecues, fireworks and summer vacation plans. As the busy summer season gets under way, it's also a great time to think about giving a little assistance to your neighbors in the Cape Cod and Islands community. The Cape Cod Times Neighbors Fund 2025 Summer Appeal kicks off today with a goal of raising $225,000 by Aug. 25 to keep neighbors housed, working, and cared for through crisis. Cape Cod's housing crisis is playing a central role in the calls for help this summer. Cape Cod Times Neighbors Fund Executive Director Susan Johnson said the call volume from those needing assistance is 16% higher over the same period from last year. 'Housing assistance remains the number one service requested, followed by utilities, transportation, food insecurity, and child care. As Cape Cod gears up for another busy summer, the rising cost of living is pushing more year-round residents to the brink,' Johnson said. The region's cost-of-living index is now at 131.5 — driven largely by housing costs nearly 93% above the national average — even full-time workers are struggling to stay afloat, she said. According to the Cape and Islands Association of Realtors, median home prices have surged past $745,000, making stable housing unreachable for many service workers and families, Johnson added. "I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up here and now to serve a community that shows up for each other in times of need. Even with all the challenges our neighbors are facing, I know we can make a difference — I've seen it happen,' said Johnson. 'With the continued generosity of both our year-round and seasonal community, we can give local families the support they need to stay secure and stable here on the Cape and Islands — whether that need comes next week, next month, or in the middle of winter." The Neighbor's Fund, founded in 1936 as the Needy Fund, is here to help our community fill those financial gaps through the continued generosity of neighbors helping neighbors. People in need submit their requests for assistance to the Neighbors Fund and in turn the Neighbors Fund pays for the goods or services — a medical bill, for example — through a voucher system. No cash is given to Neighbors Fund fundraising drive includes a summer campaign and a holiday campaign. Generally, 90% of what is raised is spent on programming and 10% on administrative expenses, Johnson said. To raise awareness about the summer appeal, the Cape Cod Times will feature a story each Wednesday and Sunday, which will be accompanied by a list of people who donated to the fund through August 25. Donations, which are tax-deductible, may be made online at Checks can be made payable to: The Cape Cod Times Neighbors Fund P.O. Audience Report: Celebrating 50 Years of ‘Jaws' on Martha's Vineyard
It was Day 3 of 'Amity Homecoming Weekend' on Martha's Vineyard, and like thousands of other 'Jaws' superfans celebrating the movie's 50th anniversary on the island where it was filmed, David Scanlon was living his dream. Scanlon, 30, of Savannah, Ga., has loved 'Jaws' since his first viewing, at age 3, from which he somehow emerged more enchanted than petrified. At 10, he begged his mother to take him to Martha's Vineyard, seven miles off Cape Cod in Massachusetts, for the 30th-anniversary festivities. 'Not this time,' she had told him. 'We'll go for the 50th.' And so it was that Scanlon and his mother — along with his sister, brother-in-law and 15-month-old nephew, Georgie — sat by the sparkling harbor on Sunday afternoon, steps from a replica of the Orca, the fishing boat where the movie's terrifying climax unfolds, savoring an experience two decades in the making. 'It's a perfect film,' Scanlon said, 'and from a very young age, you understand that — long before you have any technical understanding of why.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Ex-Red Sox Pitcher Mike Timlin to Ride in the Pan-Mass Challenge in Memory of Teammate Tim Wakefield
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield didn't get the chance to ride in the Pan-Mass Challenge, so former teammate Mike Timlin will do it for him. Timlin, who won two World Series titles alongside Wakefield, said he and his wife will ride in the cross-state fundraiser this summer in memory of their friend and teammate, who died in 2023 of brain cancer. The Pan-Mass Challenge is the largest single-event athletic fundraiser in the country, raising more than $1 billion for cancer treatment and research since 1980, with many of the riders dedicating their effort to friends and family who have died of the disease. 'PMC is good therapy,' event founder Billy Starr said in a video call with The Associated Press. 'It's one of our great sales tools.' Conceived in 1980 by Starr after his mother died of cancer, the PMC is a one- and two-day bike ride of up to 186 miles that has grown to include 46 different routes across the state, with many riders ending in Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod. This August, nearly 7,000 riders will mount up with the goal of raising $76 million for the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute, one of the nation's leading cancer treatment and research hospitals. Timlin and Wakefield shared a clubhouse when the Red Sox collapsed in the 2003 AL Championship Series against the Yankees, then came back the following season to win it all, ending the franchise's 86-year championship drought. Both pitched into their 40s, with Wakefield riding his old-timey knuckleball into the Red Sox record books as the third-winningest pitcher in team history, trailing Cy Young and Roger Clemens. Only Carl Yastrzemski, Dwight Evans, and Ted Williams played more seasons for the Red Sox. More importantly, Wakefield was a charitable workhorse, winning baseball's Roberto Clemente Award for sportsmanship and community involvement in 2010 and serving as the Red Sox nominee seven other times. He was the team's first Jimmy Fund captain, visiting with patients and raising funds for the childhood cancer charity, and the honorary chairman of the Red Sox Foundation. Wakefield worked on the team's broadcasts after retiring in 2012, and it was in the booth during PMC Day at Fenway Park in 2023 when he approached Starr. The ballplayer had not yet gone public with his diagnosis. 'He said, 'I'm riding next year.' I said, 'Well, we'll still be here and you will be welcome, of course,'' Starr said. 'And then: Whoa. (He went) so quickly downhill.' Less than three months later, Wakefield died. Later that offseason, his wife, Stacy, also died of cancer. 'We've all seen it. We've all been touched by it … it's awful. And knowing that one of my buddies had had to go through that and his wife had to go through it … it kind of drives me to do this,' Timlin said this week. 'You don't want to see someone else's family go through the tragedy. And if you can prevent that, even in a small way, then do so.' Wakefield's death was mourned across baseball and beyond. 'Wake has always been inspirational and doing stuff around the community,' Timlin said. 'He was very high on kids' charities and leading by example. We try to just emulate what he could do.' Now empty-nesters living in Colorado, Timlin and his wife, Dawn, have participated in 60-mile trail rides and other off-road events to take advantage of the outdoors. Dawn Timlin rode in the PMC four times when Mike spent the last six seasons of an 18-year major league career in Boston. 'She told me my butt's going to be really sore,' Mike Timlin said. ''You get back on your bike the second day, you're probably not going to want to see that bike ever again.' But she said the best part about it is you meet so many new people and … it is kind of amazing how you form a camaraderie with people you don't even know,' he said. 'That's the whole part about it. Just doing something as a community and getting to know new people.' And that was enough to get Timlin, who thought he might have been done with Boston drivers when his career with the Red Sox was over, back on the road. 'I mean, there are some tight roads that you have to ride on. So yes, it's quite the challenge,' he said. 'You've got to be real careful all the time.'

Iconic country band gives surprise performance at Mass. wedding
A Massachusetts couple got the surprise of a lifetime when Zac Brown Band performed at their wedding last weekend. Sal Lupoli, founder of Sal's Pizza, surprised his daughter by getting the iconic country music band to perform at her wedding reception. 'Sal wrote an extremely private, but compelling letter directly to Zac Brown. Through their correspondence they developed a relationship, which led to Zac performing at his daughter's wedding,' a spokesperson for the family told MassLive. 'While the contents remain private, it is safe to say the result had a fairytale story ending due to the kindness and big heart of Mr. Zac Brown,' they said. Zac Brown Band took the stage at Mary Lupoli's wedding to Michael DeDonato at Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod on Saturday evening, June 21. The band played their hit song, 'The Man Who Loves You the Most,' during the father-daughter dance. A video sent to MassLive shows Sal and Mary slow-dancing while Brown sings on stage in front of a slide show of the duo's pictures. Zac Brown Band continued to perform throughout the night.
