Marumo Gallants found guilty – but did Cape Town City get the outcome they wanted?
Gallants in trouble Marumo Gallants have been found guilty of playing an incorrectly registered Monde Mpambaniso during last season's league campaign. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Relegated Cape Town City's bid to remain in the Betway Premiership has taken yet another knock after the punishment handed out to Marumo Gallants for fielding an incorrectly registered player. After the PSL initially refused to prosecute Gallants over their incorrect registration of Monde Mpambaniso, Cape Town City approached the SAFA arbitration tribunal to force the league to look at the matter. Gallants pleaded guilty when appearing in front of the PSL Disciplinary Committee for the improper registration of Mpambaniso. As a result of the guilty verdict, Gallants will have to pay a fine of R200,000, with 50% suspended for 24 months. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. 'Should they reoffend, that suspended portion would be triggered immediately, and they will be further sanctioned for that subsequent misdemeanour.' The punishment will not go down well with relegated Cape Town City bosses, who led the charge against Gallants hoping for a points deduction. A points deduction would have seen Gallants finish bottom of the Betway Premiership, resulting in the Citizens retaining their place in the league. This case represented the Cape Town club's last throw of the dice to remain in the top flight after their attempts to buy another club's status did not succeed. It's a bitter pill to swallow for the Capetonians. While the guilty verdict confirms their concerns were valid, the absence of a points deduction means the club must now come to terms with life in the lower division. Picture: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix JOHANNESBURG - Stellenbosch FC are ready to be the Western Cape flagbearers in South Africa's football top-tier this season, according to veteran goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt. Local rivals Cape Town City were relegated at the end of last season, while Stellies finished in a credible third position for the second consecutive season. The Winelands club also finished runners-up in the MTN8, and enjoyed a dream run to the semi-finals in the Caf Confederation Cup. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Langeveldt feels the Maroons have become accustomed to carrying the Cape football's hopes on their shoulders. 'I think over the past few seasons, I think we were basically carrying Cape Town football,' Langeveldt said at the MTN8 launch at the SuperSport Studios in Randburg. 'Last season we won a trophy, this season we want to continue with that, winning trophies. Last season we made it to the semi-final of Caf, final of top 8, and 3rd in the league. Now it's the next hurdle to hopefully win the League and win another trophy.' Betway Premiership championship success might be a steep mountain to climb considering Mamelodi Sundowns' depth of talent and resources, but Steve Barker's charges will certainly have a crack at the MTN8 title they came so close to annexing last season. A strong showing in the MTN8 will also give Stellenbosch the confidence that they can sustain a strong challenge in the League after another off-season that has seen major exits at Danie Craven Stadium. Langeveldt believes Stellenbosch have showed that they can regroup after similar high-profile departures like Ashley du Preez, Jayden Adams, Iqraam Rayners and Zitha Kwinike in recent seasons. 'I think it's the model of the club, we're always going to lose our quality players, but we always replace well,' he said. 'I think credit to the recruitment department, there's always a plan in place if we do lose these players. 'We've proven over the last couple of years that we can do it, and hopefully we can continue like that, always bringing the same quality of players.' The 38-year-old is unlikely to feature in Sunday's MTN8 quarter-final against AmaZulu having recently been assimilated into the Stellies' coaching staff with Sage Stephens and Oscarine Masuluke set to battle it out for the No 1 jersey, but Langeveldt is elated that the club will at least face the Usuthu at Cape Town Stadium after their gypsy-like existence last season. Stellenbosch played 'home' matches in Durban, Gqeberha and even Pretoria last season. 'At least we're playing in Cape Town, so that's a positive,' he said. ' Hopefully, D.C. (Danie Craven Stadium) will be sorted soon and we can play in Stellenbosch where most of our supporters are. 'Yeah, Amazulu, it's going to be a tough match. I think they're a good team. They released a couple of players over the off-season, I think it's more than 15 if I'm not mistaken. 'So they're in a re-building phase, hopefully we can use that advantage to our advantage.'

Backdoor to MTN8: Kaizer Chiefs' fate in the hands of Cape Town City
Kaizer Chiefs could still find themselves in the MTN8 competition, depending on the outcome of Cape Town City's protest against Marumo Gallants. The dispute centres around Monde Mphambaniso, who was allegedly fielded ineligibly by Gallants. If the club is found guilty and forced to forfeit points, Amakhosi could move up the table and qualify for the MTN8. Initially, the PSL Disciplinary Committee chose not to prosecute Gallants for failing to obtain a necessary clearance certificate which is a key requirement before a player can be officially registered with the League. Cape Town City, who were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after failing to win promotion/relegation play-offs, appealed to the SAFA Arbitration Tribunal and have now won the case. If the tribunal's ruling results in points being deducted from Gallants, it could open the door for Kaizer Chiefs to take the final MTN8 spot. The DC hearing is set for Thursday and according to reports, there should be two scenarios: Marumo Gallants could be docket points or just fined. In 2019, Mamelodi Sundowns were fined R250 000 for fielding ineligible player, which was Wayne Arendse. The likely outcome could be a fine which is bad news not only for Cape Town City but also Kaizer Chiefs fans who were hoping for a backdoor entrance. Cape Town City, Gallants case could throw PSL season into chaos
Cape Town City chair John Comitis is not getting excited yet despite his side having won a case at a South African Football Association (Safa) arbitration hearing against Marumo Gallants that could throw the new Premier Soccer League (PSL) season into disarray. The Citizens filed a case against Gallants, arguing midfielder Monde Mphambaniso was not properly registered when signed from the team when it in the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) in the 2023-24 season. They sold that franchise and it which subsequently became Leruma United. Gallants returned to the Premiership ahead of the 2024-25 season by buying the franchise of Moroka Swallows. City alleged Gallants violated Rule 31.8.9.3 of the NSL handbook, which requires a clearance certificate to be submitted to the league in cases where a player has previously been registered as a professional with a member club.

PSL side face points deduction over illegal player saga
PSL side Marumo Gallants could face a heavy points deduction in the Betway Premiership following a major ruling over the registration saga involving midfielder Monde Mphambaniso. Cape Town City filed a formal complaint, claiming that Mphambaniso never received a proper clearance from Gallants' former Motsepe Foundation Championship squad, which was later sold and rebranded as Leruma United. Marumo Gallants returned to South Africa's elite league in July 2024 after acquiring the Premiership status of Moroka Swallows. In doing so, the Bloemfontein-based side offloaded their second-tier status to a new ownership consortium, who renamed the club Leruma United. However, the transfer of Mphambaniso between these entities has now sparked controversy. In the 2024/2025 campaign, Gallants finished 10th in the league with 32 points from 28 matches, a return of 8 wins, 8 draws, and 12 defeats. Mphambaniso featured in 26 of those games. Cape Town City argued that Marumo Gallants breached NSL Rule 31.8.9.3, which states that clubs must submit a clearance certificate for any player previously registered as a professional. According to the arbitration ruling, Gallants failed to provide the necessary documentation for Mphambaniso. 'City alleges that Marumo Gallants violated Rule 31.8.9.3 of the NSL handbook, which requires a clearance certificate to be submitted to the league in cases where a player has previously been registered as a professional with a member club.' SAFA's arbitration ruled in favour of Cape Town City. Paving the way for the Premier Soccer League's disciplinary committee to launch an official investigation. A guilty verdict could see Gallants lose points from matches in which Mphambaniso played, potentially altering the final league standings. Despite failing to survive the Promotional/Relegation Playoffs, which Orbit College won. Cape Town City are now banking on this case to reclaim their place in the top tier. 'This is their final attempt to maintain their top-flight status.' If the PSL rules in City's favour, Gallants could be forced into the playoffs or even face automatic relegation. With the season set to begin soon, the pressure mounts for both clubs as the disciplinary process gains momentum. Will the PSL side Cape Town City get back to the top flight?
