Italian legend tips Real Madrid trio as potential Ballon d'Or winners

As Real Madrid get set to take on Juventus tonight in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup, the game promises to be a special one for a certain Fabio Capello. The legendary Italian tactician enjoyed a successful stint as Real Madrid manager, winning two league titles in both the seasons he was in charge in 1996/97 and 2006/07. Advertisement Between 2004 and 2006, Capello was also the manager of the Juventus first-team setup. As such, tonight's clash will see two of his former teams collide on the field. Capello speaks ahead of Club World Cup clash While he will not be in attendance in the USA for the match, Capello spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t AS) ahead of tonight's encounter between Real Madrid and Juventus. During the chat, the former Italy manager was full of praise for Real Madrid's terrific trio of Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr., hailing them as potential Ballon d'Or winners. Potential Ballon d'Or winners according to Capello. (Photo by) Advertisement 'Vinicius, Mbappe, and Bellingham are three potential Ballon d'Or winners,' he said. Capello also went on to speak highly of former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti for the job he had done to get the best out of the aforementioned trio. 'Many said Ancelotti relied solely on individual talent, but he's actually been excellent at leveraging his players' talents. Now we'll see how Xabi Alonso performs, as he certainly has the personality to succeed in Madrid,' added Capello. The former manager also expressed his surprise and disappointment about Juventus letting go of Dean Huijsen, who has now signed for Real Madrid and is already looking like a brilliant addition. 'I'm surprised Juve didn't understand the kid's obvious potential. Huijsen can't have suddenly become good. If he's playing for Real Madrid at 20, he should have been at Juve even more,' said Capello.

Italy fans call for Claudio Ranieri as fears grow over missing World Cup again

Claudio Ranieri's is the people's choice to take the coaching job after the shocking 3-0 defeat to Erling Haaland's Norway with Luciano Spalletti's position under threat Italy is gripped by the fear of missing a third consecutive World Cup amid calls for Claudio Ranieri to be appointed as an emergency coach. And Fabio Capello has blamed 'Guardiolism' for the decline in traditional Italian footballing values after the 'unacceptable' defeat to Norway The Azzurri have not appeared at a World Cup since 2014 after losing playoffs to Sweden (2018) and North Macedonia (2022) despite winning Euro 2021 at Wembley. But the shambolic 3-0 defeat to Erling Haaland's side in their opening qualifying match for USA 2026 on Friday has caused panic in the Italian game. ‌ Italy had never in history lost two consecutive World Cup qualifiers or failed to score in three - and finishing second in a group also including Israel, Estonia and Moldova will see another nerve-shredding playoff. ‌ After Monday's home tie with Moldova, coach Luciano Spalletti has been called for talks with FA president Gabriele Gravina to discuss his future. Carlo Ancelotti has just been appointed Brazil boss. And so former Chelsea, Leicester and Fulham boss Ranieri, who moved upstairs at Roma at the end of season, and ex-Milan boss Stefano Pioli are the leading candidates to step in In a poll on the Gazzetta dello Sport website, 95% of voters voted for 'Sir Claudio', now 73. Gravina said: 'You can lose to Norway, but not in that manner; it's unacceptable'. But speaking on Sunday, he also defended Spalletti. 'We can't just look for someone to blame; that's the wrong approach in life. Ranieri? I send him my regards but it's not the time for names but to face reality and respect our current coach. 'I've heard such negative comments from people who are already celebrating our funeral. That was only the first of eight matches. I believe in this project, and I cannot imagine Italy without the World Cup again.' ‌ Former Napoli coach Spalletti took over from Roberto Mancini in September 2023 and has won 11 games out of 23. But a dreadful Euro 2024 campaign ended with a tame 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the last 16. And ex-England boss Capello, now 78, told Gazzetta dello Sport: 'I said I was ashamed after the heavy defeat to Switzerland, and I can repeat it now. In the past, if Italy performed poorly in a major tournament, the World Cup or the Euros, you'd go home. Now, nobody resigns anymore.' ‌ Italy have been hit by injuries to Moise Kean and Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori while veteran Francesco Acerbi withdrew from the squad claiming: 'I won't stay where I'm no longer really wanted'. His Inter Milan lost a second Champions League final in three years last week but Capello wants new rules to force every Serie A club to start with at least three Italians. And Capello - a constant critic of the influence of Pep Guardiola 's tactics in the game - said: 'I'm not surprised how Norway dominated us. In Academies, kids are told to follow tactics, keep possession, and back-pass to the goalkeeper, instead of being encouraged to develop quality and creativity. 'Where do you think we're going like that? Let me say we've taken the worst aspects of Guardiolism, our midfielders never turn towards the opponents' goal, while others constantly look forward and execute at a speed we can only dream of. Even the Champions League Final showed us that.'

Capello predicts mistakes Milan won't repeat under Allegri

Former Milan coach Fabio Capello feels the Rossoneri will be mentally stronger under Massimiliano Allegri, but insists the Diavoli must finish in the top four: 'Or it will be another failure.' Milan are on the verge of confirming Allegri's return to their bench after more than 11 years. Advertisement The Livorno-born tactician will be tasked with rebuilding a team that finished outside of a European placement last season. New Rossoneri director Igli Tare moved quickly to hire the ex-Juventus and Milan boss, who has already won six Serie A titles as a coach. (Photo by) 'It was crucial to send a clear signal to the entire environment after an extremely disappointing season. Milan can no longer afford mistakes, and they've started off on the right foot,' Capello wrote in his latest column for La Gazzetta dello Sport. Capello strongly believes that Allegri is the right man to take Milan back to the top and feels there are mistakes players won't repeat under their new manager. Advertisement 'I'm convinced that Tare played a key role in the decision to bet on Max, a coach with experience and personality. With Allegri on the bench, I expect to see the caprices of last season,' wrote Capello. Capello reveals Milan target under Allegri Massimiliano Allegri Juventus (Photo by ANDREAS SOLARO/AFP via Getty Images) 'Before discussing transfer and tactics, let's focus on the immediate impact Max can have on Milan. First of all, on mentality. Last season, we saw a team that did everything right for 20 minutes and then switched off. Everyone was enthusiastic about attacking, but few made the same efforts when it came to tracking back. It won't happen with Allegri, who has always created a cohesive environment and a team with a clear purpose and balance.' Advertisement Capello insisted that Milan should not sell Tijjani Reijnders, but 'surely, if the Dutchman leaves, he'll have to be adequately replaced. 'In my view – added Capello – Tare and Allegri should agree on technical choices, while CEO Giorgio Furlani must be responsible for approving or rejecting signings based on financial considerations.' Capello also has clear ideas on Milan's main target in 2025-26. 'I don't know how far they can go, but I know exactly where they must finish. In the top four, otherwise it will surely be another failure,' he concluded.

Milan warned against selling Reijnders to Man City

Fabio Capello warns Milan that he'd 'never' sell Manchester City target Tijjani Reijnders: 'The same thing happened to me when I arrived in Madrid…' Manchester City are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Reijnders for Milan, even though club director Giorgio Furlani reiterated on Saturday that the club don't need to sell their best players for financial reasons. Advertisement The Rossoneri will confirm Igli Tare's appointment today, and the new sporting director is expected to continue talks with the Premier League giants. Capello backed Milan's decision to hire Tare, but admitted the new director will have some arduous tasks, including hiring a new coach. As for Reijnders' future, Capello noted in an interview with Gazzetta: 'The same thing happened to me when I arrived in Madrid. I told the President that I really liked Luis Enrique, too bad they had already sold him to Barcelona. Capello explains why he'd not sell Reijnders Fabio Capello (Photo by) 'For example, I'd never sell Reijnders, but generally, only those who genuinely want to help bring Milan back to greatness should stay. Let me add one more thing: I really hope Camarda is finally given a real chance after a year in which he was kept on the bench far too often.' Advertisement Capello was appointed as the Real Madrid coach in 1996 for his first spell at the Bernabeu, but Luis Enrique joined the Merengues' domestic rivals that summer. Milan finished the 2024-25 campaign outside of a European placement. Having ranked 8th in Serie A this season, the Rossoneri will be playing in the Coppa Italia first round in mid-August, starting the pre-season a few weeks before their domestic rivals.
